Moving on to become a developed country, Indonesia is an archipelagic country that
is rich in various opportunities. To realize the determination to become a developed and
competitive country through this noble goal, most of it depends on students. Students are
agents of change who can become recipients of knowledge as well as agents of change who
help their nation to grow from the knowledge they have.
Students play an important role in development because they are the next generation
who will lead Indonesia to a better future. This research will examine the role of students to
realize a developed Indonesia with several important criteria. Students have a great obligation
to realize an advanced, creative, and equitable Indonesia through various efforts in various
fields.
This research tries to show how students can help realize an advanced Indonesia.
Indonesian students are expected to be more encouraged and actively involved in supporting
sustainable projects that aim to advance their nation.

CHAPTER I
Introduction
A. Background
Looking at the rapid changes that modern society is experiencing, it is impossible to
ignore the emergence of several global issues. Human existence is naturally related to these
difficult issues. In the midst of continuous globalization, the planet is faced with various
difficult issues that affect human life (Rachman, 2023). These issues have great long-term
consequences and affect many countries around the world. The government and society must
work together to offer environmentally friendly solutions to the issues of modern society
(Husnah, 2022). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations (UN)
are helping these collaborative efforts around the world. Originally replacing the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), which expired in 2015 and helped halve the number of poverty,
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (Cahya et al., 2022) emerged. The development
of the SDGs shows the importance of poverty and the need to pay attention to the world
today. By local leaders and authorities in Indonesia in the next five, 10, and fifteen years,
effective implementation and achievement of the SDGs will enable them to turn these targets
into usable assets and momentum (Wiyana, Fahira, Ramadhani, & Azzahra, 2023).
As a developing country, Indonesia is determined to increase its development status
by using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Covering gender equality,
environmental issues, health, education, and poverty reduction among a variety of other
development issues, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer an international
framework (Baker, 2016). Indonesia's desire to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) largely depends on its students.
This paper aims to explain how students, by supporting the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), can intentionally help Indonesia become a developed country. This
presentation will discuss the goals of students who act as social entrepreneurs, warriors of
moral and ethical values, and agents of social change. Next, we will underline, among others,
community education, cooperation, social entrepreneurship, advocacy, and education—
qualities that students can apply to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Students are essential to sustainable development and have a great influence to bring
about constructive social change in society. Student participation in group projects, social
1
entrepreneurship, social campaigns, and education can allow Indonesia's sustainable
development goals to be enhanced.

Discussion
A. Advanced Indonesia
Indonesia must achieve the SDGs in terms of sustainability. The Sustainable
Development Goals originated from the 1987 study "Our Shared Future" (Sen, Brundtland, &
Johnson, 2002). Norwegian Prime Minister Harlem Brundtland developed this concept. He
claimed that the main cause of difficulties in community development is the uneven
allocation of human resources. Many UN members agreed to the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs), which were officially accepted as world development agreements at UN
headquarters on September 25, 2015. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are one of
the developments of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Consolidated under the
theme "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," the
MDGs aim to achieve key benchmarks for the development of rich and poor countries. Based
on the MDGs target for the education sector, practically 94.7% of these results come from
basic education. Every young individual must at least obtain a basic education. When the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) program ended in 2015, Iskandar (2020) claimed
that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) program had been replaced. Maintaining
program performance is a target that must be achieved while continuing to move forward into
the future.
The seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) below are eradicating global
poverty; (2) providing nutritious food to eradicate hunger and meet nutritional needs; (3)
ensuring a healthy and successful life for all people of all ages; (4) providing excellent and
equitable education and lifelong learning opportunities for all demographics; gender equality;
(6) ensuring worldwide access to sustainable sanitation and clean water; (7) providing
affordable and contemporary access for all; Promote equitable growth, meaningful work, and
environmentally friendly economic development.
Annur (2018) underlined that because the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
embrace many groups and communities and reflect the universal application and ethical
standards to meet their goals and targets, the SDGs become more inclusive because they
represent ethical requirements. Complementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to solve important development problems.
Together with all other countries, the Sustainable Development Goals reach developed,
3
developing and underdeveloped countries. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
program consists of components of development initiatives that emphasize the sustainability
of economic success and the improvement of the general quality of life in society, including
education. One can achieve sustainable development through education. Among the 17
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is building a quality nation through equal and better
education. The improvement of Indonesian education will allow inspiration to realize this
goal. Safitri, Yunianti, and Rostika (2022) emphasized that the basic idea and goal of the
SDGs is education.
B. Students
Students who pursue post-secondary education are those identified by KBBI, 2016.
According to Damar Adi Hartaji, 2012, students are those who actively participate in
academic activities and are registered in educational institutions. Students, who are
considered intellectuals, are more aware of the challenges of today's society. Students must
investigate community problems and then convey their concerns to the government (Ilhafa et
al., 2022). Students are required, academically, to follow the Tridharma of Higher Education.
Scholhah et al. (2019) emphasized the need for students to prove mastery and autonomy in
their academic activities. Young people have social obligations.
Students occupy various important roles in society. Prospective change agents must be
able to initiate transformations in their neighborhood or other neighborhoods or act as
accelerators. Student behavior must be controlled to correct actions that are contrary to social
justice values. If a problem develops, students can offer suggestions, hypotheses, and theories
of improvement. Students are expected to be able to act as competent intermediaries between
the government and the community as a symbol of the next generation of intelligent nations
who fight for the interests of the wider community. Negative influences from outside can
damage children's morals. Smart students must be aware and ready to face the negative
impact of global life and the results of scientific and technological advances.
Students must be able to identify and absorb morals that should be embedded in
society. Students must play an active role in guiding and preserving the course of Indonesian
politics because political movements born from leadership changes can influence initiatives
to preserve the values and goals of society. High intelligence in students must be shown by
critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and clear communication skills (Arfa, 2019). One
4
pragmatic approach to increase cognitive capacity is to compile a KTI. To have the
knowledge and tools needed for their study program, students must develop many
competencies. Ask for clarification if needed; carefully examine books and papers; speak
honestly; implementing new concepts; writing essays; and conducting research (Hafizd,
2022).
Students who register and attend lectures at universities are determined based on
Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 30 of 1990. Furthermore,
Sarwono (1978) stated that what is meant by a student is a person who is officially enrolled in
a university and is between eighteen and thirty years old. Knopfemacher (in Suwono, 1978)
refers to students as future graduates who are considered intelligent because of their
participation in higher education which is increasingly in accordance with the demands of
society.
C. Student contribution to the progress of Indonesia
Writing scientific papers is one of the obligations of students if we want to achieve a
developed Indonesia. To realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a better
Indonesia, students rely heavily on students. Students who act as transformation agents can
become accelerators and supporters of social change. In addition to examining current
societal problems and providing input to the government, students are also required to
provide criticism and solutions to emerging problems.
Students are able to empower the community to maintain moral standards and ideals.
Students can instill national ethics and regulate group behavior according to the basic concept
of justice. Students can grow into extraordinary individuals, understand the principles of
society, and begin to become good role models.
Students must pay attention to national political views and policies. Students can
support the public interest, participate in political activities, and help Indonesian politics to
remain sustainable and advanced.
Students who want to succeed in this field must not only have outstanding academic
abilities but also strong critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Reading scientific papers helps a person acquire cognitive abilities. Through scientific
5
writing, students can gain knowledge, collect important data, and help community
development in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The collection of scientific papers helps students equip themselves to become agents
of sustainable development and achieve the SDGs. The application of a methodical approach
can help students improve Indonesia's sustainability degree to be more sustainable (Hafizd,
2022).
Students play an important role in the field of social entrepreneurship in helping
Indonesia achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Social entrepreneurs are
people who want to improve the welfare of the community on top of just making a profit.
Students are essential to drive constructive social change and to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).
Using their imagination and entrepreneurial energy, students can launch companies
with great social impact and job opportunities. This includes helping sustainable economic
development and poverty alleviation by encouraging good employment opportunities,
empowering underprivileged populations including widows, people with disabilities, and
school dropouts. In addition, students' imagination helps them find business opportunities
related to local needs and environmental issues. Starting companies in health, education,
ecology, and other sectors that support the achievement of the SDGs can also be part of this.
Students can effectively campaign for the implementation of the Sustainable
Development Goals in schools and local governments. Various events, seminars, and
campaigns help increase knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Students, who act as social entrepreneurs, can enhance the achievement of several
Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Poverty and Decent Work and Economic
Growth. Wijaya (2021) underlined that students with creativity, social awareness, and
tenacity can greatly help Indonesia develop socially and economically even when achieving
sustainable development targets.
Through the Independent Campus initiative, students enable Indonesia to achieve the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby advancing the nation. Through its
innovative methods, the Merdeka Campus allows students to pursue academic interests
outside of their prescribed courses, thus encouraging more responsibility and initiative in
their studies. Students are very helpful in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
6
(SDGs) in a variety of different ways. Students first have the freedom to choose the courses
and extracurricular activities that best suit their talents and interests. This allows them to
concentrate on issues such as the environment, health, education, and other Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs)-related issues. Second, students can participate in off-campus
events that help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by using the MBKM program.
They can launch their own social enterprises, help with community projects, or intern at non-
government companies.
Students can become more aware of the Sustainable Development Goals in their
classrooms. They can organize seminars, campaigns, or other events to inform their peers
about the difficulties of the SDGs and motivate projects intended for their achievement.
Students can acquire the soft and useful skills necessary to deal with sustainable development
issues on the Merdeka campus. The SDGs help a person to improve the leadership,
teamwork, communication, and analytical skills needed.
Students can improve the integration of academic knowledge with pragmatic
applications by applying the Triple Helix paradigm—which brings together government,
business, and academia. Working with commercial and government organizations, they can
help initiatives advance the SDGs. Through student-centred education, students become
agents of change that help realize the Sustainable Development Goals, thereby supporting
Indonesia's growth. The freedom and strength provided by the Merdeka Campus will enable
them to greatly assist the nation in achieving its goals for sustainable development (Falah,
2021).
D. The way students use to understand advanced Indonesia
Pushing Indonesia towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) largely
depends on the younger generation. To help the SDGs advance, students must increase public
knowledge and awareness of the SDGs among peers and the general public. Through
literature, research, and education, they can increase public knowledge about issues related to
sustainable development. Students can also embark on social projects that include
environmental, educational, or health elements that directly advance the SDGs. Working with
companies and developing relevant skills will allow students to help meet the SDGs more
actively. Those in positions of monitoring and champions can ensure that programs that
support the SDGs are implemented and participate in advocacy campaigns and events. These
7
projects enable students to better enable Indonesia to achieve sustainable development. The
role of students is as follows:(Kumparan.com, 2024)
1. Students as Agents of Change
2. Driving the Creative Economy
3. Preservation of Culture and National Identity

A. Conclusion
Students must actualize Indonesia's advanced principles and achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs). Students are strategically important as social entrepreneurs,
moral and ethical warriors, and agents of catalysts for social change. Through cooperation,
education, social participation, and social entrepreneurship, they can greatly help Indonesia to
meet its sustainable development targets. As public awareness of the difficulties of
sustainable development increases, they can also become academics, agents of change, and
leaders in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
B. Suggestions
Students should be inspired to see their responsibility towards the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) by governments, educational institutions, and society. Higher
education institutions should provide courses and activities related to the SDGs and a place
where students can thrive and support development goals. To emphasize the success of the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), government policies must inspire student
engagement. The community must help students in their initiatives and pass on the SDGs by
raising awareness of them and supporting good projects. Strong cooperation between
students, universities, the government, and the community will enable Indonesia to realize its
vision of becoming a developed, inclusive, sustainable, and sustainable development country.
