1 EXT. SPACE - USS ENTERPRISE 1

The USS Enterprise SPEEDS THROUGH SPACE at warp six.

2 INT. SPOCK’S QUARTERS - USS ENTERPRISE 2

SPOCK and McKENNAH face each other across Spock’s desk, eyes
closed and fingers steepled. A Vulcan meditation lamp burns
on the desktop between them.

Spock’s eyes open. He lowers his hands and regards McKennah

in the flickering light of the lamp. McKennah’s eyes also
open, and she smiles at him.

MCKENNAH
Thank you for allowing me to
meditate with you.

SPOCK
This is normally done in private,
counselor. But it is an honor to
teach Vulcan techniques to one so
willing.

MCKENNAH
These… ‘sessions.’ They’re the
only times Vulcans pay attention to
their emotions?

SPOCK
We find it salutary to have an
interval during which to ask
ourselves the question no other
Vulcan may: ‘How do you feel?’

MCKENNAH
(smiles)
When this mission is over… I’m
going to miss these times with you.

Doctor. I believe you may benefit
from further training with masters
on Vulcan.

MCKENNAH
(gently)
Perhaps you could as well. There’s
a discipline called Dalhutnar,
isn’t there? To help one accept
the wisdom of vestigial emotions?

SPOCK
There is also the Kolinahr, to
purge all remaining emotions.
(beat)
There is no chance of me
undertaking the former -- nor the
latter.

McKennah frowns. Unsaid: ‘Why?’

SPOCK (cont’d)
I am rarely disposed to discuss
matters of a personal nature…

McKennah begins to press, but Spock beats her to it.

SPOCK (cont’d)
…but our relationship is… special.
(off her smile)
I have served aboard this starship
for sixteen years under two
captains. I would not admit this
in front of Doctor McCoy. But such
a lengthy association with men and
women from Earth has taught me to
value my maternal birthright… in a
way I never could, had I remained
on Vulcan.

McKennah reaches across the desk and takes Spock's hand,

squeezing it. Spock lifts an eyebrow… and then, honoring the
words he just spoke, he squeezes her hand back.

Off McKennah, smiling warmly in the lamplight.

3 EXT. SPACE - USS ENTERPRISE 3

The Enterprise CRUISES along.

KIRK V.O.
Captain’s log, stardate six-nine-
eighty-eight point four. The
Enterprise is scheduled to return
to Earth shortly.

4 INT. KIRK’S QUARTERS - USS ENTERPRISE 4

A weary KIRK is seated on the edge of his bed, hunched over.

He’s continuing to DICTATE his log into a tricorder.

KIRK
I always intended to bring her back
in one piece -- but it’s a
bittersweet triumph. The recent
loss of our sister ships still
gnaws at me. Whatever caused the
Hood’s crew to lose their life-
support -- killing all four-hundred-
thirty men and women aboard -- is…

Kirk is interrupted by a COMM WHISTLE. He gets up, TURNS ON

the viewer on his desk, and swivels it to face him.

KIRK (cont’d)
(into comm)
Kirk here.

UHURA V.O.
(filtered; over comm)
Priority incoming message from the
Chief of Starfleet Operations.

KIRK
(into comm)
I’ll take it down here, lieutenant.

INTERCUT:

5 INT. OFFICE - STARFLEET HQ - VIEWER INSERT 5

THESP, Andorian, APPEARS on the screen. Her appearance --

blue skin, antennae -- is so arresting, we hardly notice the
standard gray ‘The Motion Picture’ uniform. Starbase patch.
Rear admiral stripes.

INTERCUT:

6 INT. KIRK’S QUARTERS - USS ENTERPRISE 6

KIRK
(into comm)
Admiral Thesp.

THESP
(filtered; on screen)
Captain. Priority One. We’re
diverting you to Aldebaran.

Kirk reacts, puzzled.

KIRK
(into comm; reacts)
Considering the ships we’ve lost in
that system recently… are you
certain that’s a wise idea?

THESP
(filtered; on screen)
Wise or not… it’s necessary. The
Yorktown and Republic were severely
damaged during their investigation
into the Hood’s loss. And shortly
afterwards… the Federation colony
on Aldebaran Three went completely
silent.

KIRK
(into comm; frowns)
What do you mean… ‘silent’?

THESP
(filtered; on screen)
Starfleet has a top-secret
laboratory on that world. The
supply vessel we sent to
investigate -- the SS Halifax --
never returned.

Before we lost contact, the Halifax
reported significant anti-proton
residue on the planet’s surface. I
think you know what that means.

Romulans.

7 EXT. SPACE - USS ENTERPRISE 7

SUPER episode titles as the Enterprise maneuvers into an

equatorial orbit around Aldebaran III. A prominent, fresh
crater is visible.

8 INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM - USS ENTERPRISE 8

SCOTT at the console. Spock -- equipped with phaser,

tricorder, communicator -- is consulting the hooded viewer.

Kirk, DICKERSON ENTER. Carrying phasers and communicators.

SPOCK
Captain. Readings indicate that
the colony has been destroyed.

KIRK
(reacts)
Romulan plasma weapon?

SPOCK
(shakes head)
Judging by the damage, it appears
the central reactor suffered a
containment failure.

KIRK
That’s unusual.

SCOTT
It’s impossible! I installed the
safeguards myself five years ago.

KIRK
Perhaps some kind of sabotage?

Spock simply nods.

Kirk, Spock, Dickerson take their places on the pad.

SCOTT
At least the Pandora Science Lab’s
intact. But it’s underground… and
it generates a particle scattering
field. I’ll have ta put ya down
outside.

KIRK
(nods confirmation)
Just get us there in one piece,
Scotty.
(off his nod)
Energize.

9 EXT. ALDEBARAN III SURFACE - DAY 9

Kirk, Spock, Dickerson MATERIALIZE. It’s very bright:

Aldebaran, a red sun, fills much of the sky. Kirk and
Dickerson shield their eyes with their hands as they look
around.

Spock SCANS with his tricorder (with his inner eyelid, he has
no need to shield his own eyes).

SPOCK
The disruption field is obscuring
my readings. I am detecting two
life forms large enough to be
humanoid.

Spock gestures with his tricorder toward…

10 EXT. PANDORA LAB - ALDEBARAN III SURFACE - DAY 10

The landing party approaches a small elevator bunker.

KIRK
I don’t suppose they left a spare
key under a rock?

Spock works his TRICORDER.

SPOCK
I can attempt to access the lift
using standard Federation prefixes.

Suddenly, a DEFENSIVE DRONE -- a floating sphere about the

size of a basketball, with phaser turrets -- rises from atop
the elevator bunker and heads their way!

DICKERSON
Automated defenses!

The drone FIRES; Spock dives out of the way.

Kirk FIRES at the drone, but the beam BOUNCES OFF!

Spock joins in FIRING.

SPOCK
We must maintain the barrage. The
drone cannot fire through its own
shield.

Dickerson starts FIRING too, but the beams continue to be

DEFLECTED. The men duck for cover. Amidst the turmoil:

KIRK
Got any other ideas?

SPOCK
It is possible the turret’s
antigrav beam creates a gap at the
bottom of its deflector screen.

KIRK
(reacts)
It’s possible?!

Spock raises an eyebrow.

KIRK (cont’d)
Well… if that’s all we’ve got…

Kirk nods and does a barrel roll, dodging Dickerson and

Spock’s DEFLECTED PHASER BEAMS! He brings himself directly
beneath the drone. SHOOTS his phaser straight up.

The drone is VAPORIZED!

Kirk gets up and dusts himself off. Spock studies the spot
where the drone was a moment ago.

SPOCK
Fascinating.

A FEMALE VOICE:

LANA (O.S.)
You’re Vulcan?

The men whirl, phasers drawn. Standing in the now-open

elevator door is LANA, human, 40s, gorgeous, in a standard
Federation science colony jumpsuit. She wears wraparound
sunglasses.

LANA (cont’d)
(to Spock)
You. You’re Vulcan?

SPOCK
Affirmative.

LANA
(smiles)
When a simple ‘yes’ would do.
Vulcan for sure.
(beat)
Forgive the attack. The drone’s
sensors thought you were another
Romulan invader. The bio-signs are
almost identical.
(to Kirk)
You’re in charge?

KIRK
Captain James T. Kirk. Federation
starship Enterprise.

LANA
(mischievous grin)
T for ‘Tiberius.’

Kirk frowns. Unsaid: “How did you know?”

And now Lana removes her glasses. She has SILVERED EYES,
like the mutants we saw in ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before.’

All react with surprise.

KIRK
Who are you? What happened here?

LANA
You don’t know?
(beat)
It was your starship that pierced
the barrier around our galaxy five
years ago. An energy field that
‘enhances’ humans with high ESP
quotients. Uplifts them.
(off Kirk’s silence)
Since then… certain Starfleet
officials have been assembling us.
Testing us. Experimenting. Twenty-
five in total.

SPOCK
It would appear you have journeyed
through the barrier yourself.

LANA
A trial run.

KIRK
‘Trial?’ For what?

LANA
The ultimate last resort.

Spock puts it together.

SPOCK
Protection… against invasion.

LANA
(nods)
In the event the Federation is ever
invaded by a superior force, we
were to fly through the galactic
barrier…

SPOCK
…granting you superior powers.
Effectively… weaponizing you.

KIRK
The Federation isn’t in the
business of ‘weaponizing’ its
citizens.

You should better familiarize
yourself with the Starfleet
Charter. Article Fourteen, Section

(off his frown)
Captain, absolute power doesn’t
corrupt absolutely; it corrupts
selectively. As you know from
experience. Aboard your ship, one
uplifted esper became a
megalomaniac… while the other
retained humanity.

KIRK
Which kind are you?

LANA
I follow Sas-tar-po-harn.

SPOCK
(off Kirk’s frown)
A human spiritual movement which
follows the pacifist teachings of
Surak and T’Mord of Vulcan.

LANA
Psychologically unsuitable espers
were excluded from this project.

KIRK
About my original question… What
happened here?

Lana swallows. Closes her eyes. A painful memory.

LANA
A cloaked vessel arrived. They
overwhelmed the lab. Destroyed the
ship sent here to investigate.

KIRK
The Halifax.

LANA
(nods)
The Romulans vaporized our
scientists. And kidnapped the
espers.
(CONTINUED)

KIRK
What about you?

LANA
I used my powers to suspend my life
signs.
(off Spock’s frown)
I ‘played dead.’

DICKERSON
What do Romulans want with a bunch
of espers?

SPOCK
I believe I can surmise the answer,
lieutenant.
(beat)
Despite my own advanced ESP rating,
my experiences with the barrier did
not ‘uplift’ me. I suspect Vulcan
physiology renders us immune to its
psionic effects. And if Vulcans
cannot be ‘uplifted’…

KIRK
…then neither can Romulans.
(off Lana’s nod)
They want to use the kidnapped
espers. To form an attack force.

LANA
But not against us, captain.
Against the Romulan praetor. They
oppose his termination of the
Klingon alliance.

KIRK
Romulan politics aren’t my concern.
But getting our people back is.
(to Lana)
What’s your name?

LANA
Lana.

KIRK
You’ll be safe with us, Lana.

SPOCK
Captain, a word.

Spock draws Kirk aside.

SPOCK (cont’d)
If you recall, it was extremely
dangerous to have Mitchell aboard
the Enterprise after his powers had
been multiplied. If we leave Lana
here, she remains as we intended
him to be: isolated, where she can
do no harm.

KIRK
You heard her, Spock. She’s a
pacifist.
(beat)
If we’re gonna pursue a Romulan
ship full of espers -- espers who
may’ve been turned -- I wanna have
one of our own.

SPOCK
A most logical position.

KIRK
You sound surprised.

SPOCK
(off Kirk’s smile)
Captain. There is the matter of
the other life form I detected.

A VOICE from O.S.:

SENTEK (O.S.)
That would be me, commander.

They whirl and see a male Romulan -- whom we will later know
as SENTEK. He’s wearing a full Romulan commander’s uniform --
and has his disruptor drawn and aimed directly at Kirk.

Dickerson aims his phaser at the Romulan.

DICKERSON
Drop your weapon!

(CONTINUED)

SENTEK
Are you confident you can shoot me
before I kill your captain? Disarm
now.

KIRK
Hold your position, lieutenant!

Dickerson is torn. Sentek does something to his disruptor,

and a THROBBING ELECTRONIC NOISE emanates from it. Reactions
from all!

SENTEK
Surrender is not the Romulan way.
Fire now, and this disruptor will
detonate.
(beat)
I have no quarrel with you. Save
yourselves. But the mutant stays
with me.

The electronic THROBBING is INCREASING.

SPOCK
Captain. Given that particular
model of firearm… I believe we have
approximately twenty-eight seconds
until a forced-chamber overload.

KIRK
(to Sentek)
We’re not abandoning a Federation
civilian!

SENTEK
You have little choice.

Lana sweeps her hand, and her telekinetic power YANKS the
disruptor from Sentek’s grip! It lands inside the elevator
door, still BUILDING to an overload.

Sentek turns to retrieve his disruptor -- and Kirk JUMPS him!

The Romulan is much stronger than any human, but Kirk holds
his own until Spock SURGES IN and administers a neck pinch.
Sentek falls to the ground.

The THROBBING from the disruptor is increasing! Now an EAR-

PIERCING WAIL!

Captain! We cannot leave him here

Kirk FLIPS OPEN his communicator quickly!

The TRANSPORTER WHINES and the group DEMATERIALIZES -- just

as the disruptor -- and the bunker -- EXPLODE!

Mister Sulu has detected the
Romulan kidnappers on long-range
sensors. We’re on an intercept
course.

Set a course for the Romulan
Neutral Zone. Maximum warp.

15 INT. BRIDGE - USS ENTERPRISE 15

Spock in the chair. UHURA, SULU at their stations. CHEKOV

at science. SMITH at nav sub-systems. Relief NAVIGATOR at
nav. PALMER at engineering.

SPOCK
(into comm)
Acknowledged.

He SWITCHES off the comm.

Sulu turns to Spock.

SULU
Mister Spock?

SPOCK
You heard the order, lieutenant.

SULU
(swallows)
Yes sir.

station. Hands her a microtape.

SPOCK
Uhura. Transmit this encrypted
message on the following subspace
frequency.

He PRESSES A FEW BUTTONS on her panel.

UHURA
(frowns)
Sir? That carrier wave is only
used by…

SPOCK
(interrupting)
Please proceed.
(off her nod)
Direct any responses to my
quarters.

And he LEAVES.

16 EXT. SPACE - USS ENTERPRISE 16

In flight.

17 INT. SICKBAY - USS ENTERPRISE 17

Lana is sitting on an examination bed. MCCOY consults his

READOUTS.

MCCOY
Four-oh. Perfect.

LANA
(smiles)
I try to take the stairs instead of
levitating whenever I can. Keep in
shape.

Kirk ENTERS.

LANA (cont’d)
Captain.

KIRK
We’re in hot pursuit. We’ll get
your friends back.

LANA
And the Romulan?

KIRK
He’s in our brig.

Lana. Why was he still there? On
Aldebaran Three?

LANA
(sighs)
I think he’s a praetorian spy.
Must’ve infiltrated the dissidents.
He fled into the hills after they
discovered him.
(beat)
We were the only people alive at
the lab for weeks. Our paths
crossed… frequently.

KIRK
Do you trust him?

LANA
About as far as I can throw him.

KIRK
In your case… I’d wager that’s
pretty far.
(off her smile)
Why didn’t you? Use your abilities
to subdue him.

LANA
He has… tremendous innate powers.
And as I told you, captain… I’m a
strict pacifist. I do not utilize
my abilities to harm others unless
they pose a direct threat.

Kirk frowns, as if he doesn’t quite buy that. But he moves

on:

threats’… we’ll be engaging the
Romulan ship soon. I’m hoping I
won’t have to call on you. But…

I’ve got the chem lab synthesizing
hyronalin. Best thing for
radiation burns.

The COMM WHISTLE sounds.

SULU V.O.
(filtered; over comm)
Bridge to captain.

Kirk ACTIVATES the wall communicator.

KIRK
(into comm)
Kirk here.

SULU V.O.
(filtered; over comm)
The marauder’s about to cross into
the Neutral Zone.

KIRK
(into comm)
Sound battle stations, Sulu. I’m
on my way.

Kirk EXITS as the KLAXON begins to SOUND and the above-door

RED-ALERT LIGHT starts FLASHING.

McCoy gives Lana a reassuring nod. Unsaid: ‘Don’t worry.’

Off Lana, nonetheless looking very worried indeed.

[RED ALERT.] As before (Uhura at comm; Sulu at helm; Smith

at nav sub-systems; Chekov at science; relief Navigator at
nav; Palmer at engineering). Everyone’s very serious.

Kirk ENTERS from the lift and stands near his seat.

KIRK
How long to the Neutral Zone
boundary?

SULU
Ten seconds.

KIRK
(to Uhura)
Lieutenant…?

UHURA
Our orders recorded and logged,
sir.

SULU
Five seconds.

KIRK
Stay sharp, everyone.

COMPUTER VOICE (V.O.)

Warning! Treaty violation!
Warning! Treaty violation!

KIRK
Uhura, mute that.

Uhura HITS a control; the computer voice STOPS.

SULU
On course for Romulan space.

KIRK
Keep an even hand on the tiller,
Sulu.

CHEKOV
Out of the frying pan, into the
fire.

WHOOSHES by CAMERA.

No sign of the marauder, captain.
Could be cloaked.

Smith speaks up from the nav sub-systems station:

SMITH
I’ve got something on the motion
sensors.

KIRK
Can we get a phaser lock?

SMITH
No sir. But he’s out there.

KIRK
See if you can boost the
directional beam. We need surgical
precision… Take out his engines
without endangering the habitat
module.

She nods.

CHEKOV
(re: science viewer)
Captain… a Romulan ship is
decloaking off our port bow!

KIRK
Shields to maximum!

CHEKOV
T’liss-class imperial bird-of-prey.
I have wisual!

They turn to the VIEWSCREEN:

Spock ENTERS from the lift.

SPOCK
(knowingly)
Negative. The vessel is registered
as the IRW Hawk’s Talon.

Kirk gives Spock a ‘what the hell?’ scowl.

UHURA
Captain. We’re being hailed.

Kirk nods for Uhura to open the channel.

On screen, CHARVANEK -- the female Romulan commander from

‘The Enterprise Incident’ -- APPEARS.

I received Mister Spock’s message
requesting a parley. Yet the fact
remains… the Enterprise violated

Romulan space.

[No longer red alert.] Kirk SLAMS his fist onto the table.
REVEAL Kirk seated. Spock standing.

KIRK
Contacting the Romulans -- that
Romulan! -- on your own
initiative?! Why didn’t you tell
me?

SPOCK
You would not have agreed.

KIRK
Damn right I wouldn’t have! You’re
lucky I don’t rip one of those
stripes off your sleeve.

SPOCK
Captain. I became aware of reports
that Charvanek was granted command
of a new bird-of-prey after she was
repatriated. I am confident --
once I speak with her -- that she
will see the wisdom of assisting us
in pursuing the Romulan dissidents.
(beat)
She and I have a… ‘rapport.’

Kirk reacts. Calms himself and nods.

KIRK
Bring her aboard.

Spock heads toward the door, but Kirk stops him.

KIRK (cont’d)
Spock. You’ve got thirty minutes
to persuade her.
(beat)

Spock and Charvanek lock gaze for a moment, a thought passing

between them.

Suddenly, we hear the TRANSPORTER WHINE. Inside the brig,

Drake and Charvanek look astonished. Kirk POUNDS the wall

room’s center. He TOSSES aside two ENGINEERS, sending one
crashing into the forced-perspective grille.

Scotty watches helplessly as Sentek PULLS OPEN the dilithium

assembly, exposing the pentagonal crystal pack. MIST fills
the room!

Sentek pulls the crystal out of the holder. Lights DIM as it

comes free!

Sulu now in center seat. Chekov at science; Uhura at comm;

Smith at helm; Palmer at engineering; relief Navigator at

The lights DIM!

Scott barely manages to catch it before it smashes!

Scott scrambles up the ladder and begins to WORK on a panel.

Kirk RUSHES Sentek as well. Sentek TOSSES the men aside like
rag dolls. Dickerson’s phaser goes flying!

Charvanek -- who also has Romulan strength -- CHARGES at

Sentek! They STRUGGLE.

Scott WORKS quickly at the panel. The electro-plasma MIST

begins to DISSIPATE.

Sentek brings his right hand up to grip Charvanek’s face.

She GASPS, and he brings his left hand up, completing a nerve
pinch. Charvanek DROPS to the floor.

The MIST is finally gone.

SCOTT (cont’d)
Clear!

Kirk scrambles to recover Dickerson’s phaser pistol. He

scoops it up and FIRES.

Sentek collapses against a console, his head SMASHING into

it. He falls to the floor, green blood oozing from his
forehead.

Kirk kneels next to Charvanek, examining her motionless form.
