B: Yes, usually they do. But we have tried our best to reduce any harmful impact.

I was waiting outside the classroom. I was feeling sick, and I always felt this way during exam week.
Today I had two exams, and unfortunately, physics was first. I hated physics my head. But this was
the last day of exams! O could see the light at the end of he tunnel. I took a deep breath and
looked around. I saw Emma at the front of the line. ⓐShe did not have a problem with physics. In
fact, she did not have problem with anything! She looked back at me and then looked away quickly.
I thought she looked guilty. ⓑShe was avoiding eye contact. “Hi, Sue, now it’s your favorite
subject,” said teasing me as ⓒshe approached. Emma looked back again. “Does ⓓShe have a

(A)
I could not answer the last two questions in physics. They were beyond me. I looked up and saw
Emma siting in the front row. To my astonishment, she had her smartphone under the table and was
stealing quick glances at it.

(B)
“Stop writing and put your pens down” said Ms. Reed. “Oh, no! I didn’t finish all of the questions.
I’m going to fail again!” I thought. She started to collect the exam papers. I wanted to talk to Emma
at lunchtime, but she was nowhere to be seen in the school cafeteria. The next exam was history,
my favorite subject, but I did not feel good about it.

(C)
I did not know what to think! Was that how Emma always got good grades? I felt really angry at her
but did not know what to do. I thought about telling the teacher but could not bring myself to do it.
“What would everyone else think of me?” I thought. “It’s not fair. I’ve never cheated, and I ended
up failing lots of exams.” With a sigh, I told myself, “Better to be a failure than a cheat.” Emma had
put her smartphone away when I looked up again. She looked back at me and smiled awkwardly.

(D)
I went to the school library to go over my notes one last time, but I could not concentrate on them. I was sitting
behind Emma again at the history exam that afternoon. This time, she did not take out her smartphone. Maybe
she did not need to cheat at history. I was feeling angry again, but I had no problem with the exam.

I was waiting outside the classroom. I was feeling sick. and I always felt this way during exam
week. Today I had two exams, and unfortunately, physics was first. I hated physics because I could
never get all those abstract theories straight in my head. But this was the last day of exams! I could
see the light at the end of the tunnel. I took a deep breath and looked around. I saw Emma at the
front of the line. She did not have a problem with physics. In fact, (1)she did not have a problem
with anything! She looked back at me and then looked away quickly. I thought she looked guilty. She
was avoiding eye contact.
“Hi, Sue, now it’s your favorite subject,” said Lisa, teasing me as she approached. Emma looked
back again.
“Does she have a problem?” Lisa sid to me. “I thought you were friends.”
“Yes, so did I,” I said. “But she has been avoiding me for two weeks now. She promised to help
me prepare for the physics exam, but she ignored all my calls and tests. (2)It was no use calling
her at home, either. Her mom just told me she was busy. She doesn’t remember (A)]who her friends
are / who are her friends]!” I said with anger.
Mr. Reed was addressing the class, and the other students filed into the room. I gave Lisa a
worried look and followed ⓐthem inside.
I could not answer the last two questions. ⓑThey were beyond me. Frustrated, I looked up and
saw Emma sitting in the front row. To my astonishment, she had her smartphone under the table
and was stealing quick glances at it. I did not know what to think! Was ⓒthat how Emma always
got good grades? I felt really angry at her but did not know what to do. I thought about telling the
teacher but (3)I could not bring myself to do it. “What would everyone else think of me?” I thought,
“It’s not fair. I’ve never cheated, and I ended up failing lots of exams.” With a sigh, I told myself,
“Better to be a failure than a cheat.” Emma had put her smarphone away when I looked up again.
She looked back at me and smiled awkwardly.
“Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Reed. He started to collect the exam papers.
“Oh, no! I didn’t finish all of the questions. I’m going to fail again!”
I wanted to talk to Emma at lunchtime, but she was nowhere to (B)[see / be seen] in the school
cafeteria. The next exam was history, my favorite subject, but I did not feel good about it. I went to
the school library to go over my notes one last time, but I could not concentrate on ⓓthem. I still
felt really conflicted about Emma. I considered reporting her to a teacher, but I just could not do ⓔit.
I said to myself, “Everyone would hate me if I did that. It’s not fair! Emma has been getting good
grades by cheating all the time. How silly I am! I thought we were friends!”
I was sitting behind Emma again at the history exam that afternoon. This time, she did not take out
her smartphone. Maybe she did not need to cheat at history. I was feeling awful again, but I had no
problem with the exam. I was asking myself, “Should I tell Mr. Reed once the exam is finished? But
what would happen to Emma and what about for me? What about our friendship? Wait, have we
ever truly been friends? I was filled with total confusion.
I was on the last question when I saw that Emma had her smartphone under the table. She was
looking at it and did not hear Mr. Pendanski walking quietly up to her table. He said nothing. Emma
looked up, (C)[surprising / surprised]. He picked up her exam paper and pointed to the door. It was
no use trying to hold back the tears. (4)She could not help crying. Then she made her way to the
door. As everyone watched her, I felt all my frustration turn to pity.
As I was leaving school. I heard someone come up behind me. It was Emma.

<The Art of Persuasion>

Sometimes you need to persuade others in situations such as debates, discussions, or public
speeches. (1)But how can you do so effectively? There are three key elements of effective
persuasion: credibility, logic, and emotion. Let’s look at them one by one.

Credibility
Credibility means that the audience believes you and your words. First, credibility comes from proper
delivery. If you use clear expressions and show respect for the audience, they will usually trust you
more. That is to say, hesitation, exaggeration, or rudeness should be kept in check. In addition,
credibility comes from reliable sources, ⓐwhich include the results of recent studies or expert opinions.
Look at the two statements below. Whose statement do you think is more credible?

Taeho: Violent games cause aggressive behavior in children. Recently conducted research has proved it.
Jimin: Violent games cause aggressive behavior in children. People say so.

Taeho cites the results of recent research as (A)[circumstantial / supporting] evidence for his idea.
But Jimin just relies on random people’s opinions. (2)Therefore, Taeho’s statement is more credible
than Jimin’s.

Logic
Logic is a (B)[reasonable / ambiguous] way of thinking about something. It is another key element
of effective persuasion, but we often use it incorrectly. Let’s find the logical fallacies ⓑwhich the
three speakers are using in the following debate.

Social Media“ Good or Bad?

Speaker A: I think social media is bad as a means of making friends. For a long time, people have
been meeting in person to make friends. However, social media is not a way of doing so. Therefore,
it is not a correct way to make friends.

Speaker B: Well, I think social media is very useful. It lets me ⓒto reach my friends anytime,
anywhere. So I became closer to them. Because it worked for me, I am sure that social media is
good for others, too.

Speaker C: I don’t agree. Social media does us harm. News reports say the use of social media is
increasing. And the crime rate is also increasing. Therefore, social media causes crime.

Did you find any logical fallacies in the debate? Speaker A appeals to tradition to back up her
opinion. However, tradition cannot be the (C)basis / consequence] for our judgment. Doing something
for a long time does not guarantee ⓓthat it is correct. In other words, making friends face to face,
which is the traditional way, cannot be the reason to reject social media. In the case of Speaker B,
she is making a hasty generalization. She just uses her personal situation to make a broad
judgment. (3)Those who use social media do not always become closer to one another. Speaker C
is using false reasoning. (4)The increase in social media use and crime just happened to occur at

- 65 -

the same time. It means there is no logical relationship between them.

Emotion
Emotions are strong feelings such as love, sympathy, anger, or grief. Good speakers often use
effective language to win over an audience. Let’s compare two different speeches.

Speech with Emotion: A man is losing consciousness. He is bleeding a lot. He needs more blood to
survive. But there is no one to save him. What if you could do so? Well, you can! Donate your
blood and save a life!

Speech Without Emotion: Recent medical research suggests that donating blood ⓔreduces the risk of
a heart attack. Donate your blood and stay healthy.

(5)Are you having difficulty persuading others? Do you want to be a better speaker? Then, please
remember the three key elements: credibility, logic, and emotion. Using them will make a huge
difference.

<Painting the World Bright - Hong Jinsu>

I love drawing. My dream is ⓐto make the world a better place through my paintings. When I
became a high school student, I joined an art club. The club ran a wall-painting volunteer program
ⓑin which I got the chance to participate. Last Saturday was “volunteering day.” We went to an
elementary school in a small town. Its wall was white and clean. Actually, some other volunteers ⓒ
had already painted it white. The wall looked like a big canvas. First, some people made sketches,
and then others painted them. The theme of the painting was “Garden of Dreams.” I painted some
butterflies, honey bees, and flowers. ⓓWorking as a group was a lot of fun. Although it was hot, we
did not mind. We tried our best to complete the picture. When the picture was finished, I was
amazed. Our collaboration had turned the empty wall into a beautiful, exciting garden. One by one,
the little children of the town gathered to see the picture. They looked so happy. I was delighted ⓔ
to see their happy faces. I felt like I was one step closer to my dream.

Sending Joy Through My Voice

Kang Yubin
I had always been interested in volunteering, but I did not know what I could do. One day, when I
was watching TV, I learned about “voice volunteering.” It meant making audio books for the blind by
reading the books aloud. I said to myself, “㉠________________________________________” The
next day I went to the community center and took a quick test in the recording room. Luckily, I
passed it. A few days later, I came back to the recording room where I had taken the test. I got
some training on accurate pronunciation before recording. My first job was to read a history book for
high school students. I started reading the book with my heart beating very fast. I was very nervous
but tried my best to read naturally. Even though I made some mistakes, I successfully finished my
first recording. My recorded voice sounded a little strange to me. But the recording manager said that
I had done well.

Hi, have you been to Bath in the UK? Today I’d like to share what I experienced on my first trip
there. The town of Bath has ancient natural hot springs, and the Romans built structures for public
bathing almost 2,000 years ago. The Roman Baths are one of such sites. Inside the building, there
is a hung pool. I could see steam rising from the pool’s hot spring water. However, I couldn’t go in
there to have a bath. While walking around the pool, I was surprised to see some people wearing
Roman clothing. Actually, they were guides working there. I talked to them and learned a lot about
Roman life. I could also see many interesting objects displayed in the building. If you have a chance
to visit there, don’t forget to taste the hot spring water from a drinking fountain. Honestly, I didn’t like
the taste, but it has many minerals that are good for your health.

After breakfast, my family headed to Ilulissat with Mr. Nielsen. He explained that the word “ilulissat”
means “icebergs” in Greenlandic. I could see many tourists who were there to see the icebergs. The
first thing that caught my eye was a road sign with a picture of a sled on it. I asked Mr. Nielsen
what it was for. He said, “It warns people about the dog sleds passing through this area.” I wanted
to see a dog sled, but it was not snowy enough for them yet. We took a boat from the town harbor
to see the icebergs better. What we saw as we approached them left us speechless. Enormous
icebergs of different shapes were floating in the sea. Some of them were as big as mountains. Mr.
Nielsen said, “The icebergs are melting and slowly changing into new shapes every day. In fact, they
are melting faster than ever.” That means ________________________. Dad kept taking pictures,

[A] One day, Dad showed me a wonderful picture of the Northern Lights. It was sent by Erik
Nielsen, who is Dad’s close friend living in Greenland. He invited my whole family, and we decided
to go. From that moment on, I could not wait to see the Northern Lights with my own eyes.

Day 1
[B] We were finally about to land at Nuuk Airport in a few minutes. I looked down and saw ocean,
hills, and buildings with some snow on them here and there. It looked cold out, but after such a long
flight I could not wait to get off the airplane. When I got out, I ⓐnoticed other passengers clapping
their hands as they got off. Mom and I followed (A)[where / what] they did without knowing why. Dad
later told me that it is an old tradition celebrating a safe arrival. Interesting! The air was certainly
cold but ⓑrefreshing. Mr. Nielsen was waiting for us in the arrival zone. He looked very kind. He
drove us to his home near the airport. Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, looked quite modern and
clean. As we entered his house, Ms. Nielsen and their son Joas said, “Tikilluarit.” It means
“welcome” in Greenlandic.

[C] That evening we had dinner at their home. They cooked suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic stew.
Ms. Nielsen told us it was made from whale meat with chopped onions, carrots, mushrooms, and
several grains such as barley. The flavor was a bit strong and the meat was chewy, but I liked it.
While having dinner, the Nielsens told us about some Greenlandic traditions. When I said I wanted to
learn more, they suggested that we (B)[go / went] to the National Museum of Greenland together.

Day 2
[D] Mr. Nielsen and Joas took my family to the National Museum of Greenland. On our way to the
museum, I noticed a red building that looked like a mailbox. Actually, it was a real mailbox! “It is the
world’s biggest mailbox. It was ⓒdesignated to protect the mail from strong snowy winds,” explained
Joas. When I got close to it and looked up, I felt as if I (C)[was / were] in Giant Land in Gulliver’s
Travels.

[E] At the museum, we could see traditional costumes, tools, and handicrafts made by the Inuit, who
are the native Greenlanders. They used animal skins to make warm clothes and even boats. Using
animal bones and horns, they made weapons and tools such as knives and needles, and even ⓓ
carved works of art. I could sense their wisdom and strong ⓔdetermination to overcome the harsh
environment.

M: Hi, have you been to Bath in the UK? ⓐToday I’d like to share what I experienced on my first
trip there. The town of Bath has ancient natural hot springs, and the Romans built structures for
public bathing almost 2,000 years ago. ⓑThe Roman Baths are one of such sites. Inside the
buildings, there is a huge pool. I could see steam rising from the pool’s hot spring water. ⓒ
However, I couldn’t go in there to have a bath. While walking around the pool, I was surprised to
see some people wearing Roman costumes. ⓓIt is one of the most famous places in London.
Actually, they were guides working there. I talked to them and learned a lot about Roman life. ⓔI
could also see many interesting objects displayed in the building. On, if you have a chance to visit
there, don’t forgt to taste the hot spring water from a drinking fountain. Honestly, I didn’t like the

Day 5
This morning, ㉠Mr. Nielsen kindly saw us off at the airport. As the plane took off, I looked down at
Greenland once again. The landscape looked the same, but this time I had quite a different feeling.
㉡Greenland may not be as “green” as the name suggests. However, it showed me the beauty of its
grand nature. I was also able to learn about the strong spirit of the native people living here. It will
always remain in my memory as a dynamic and colorful place to visit.

How are you doing? I mean to write you earlier, but I have been very busy since I got here two
days ago with my family. It is my third day in Greenland, and I am now writing from a town called
Ilulissat. We came here to see the icebergs. You will not believe how big they are! Ima`gine you are

write you again when I get there.
Take care.

We were finally about to land at Nuuk Airport in a few minutes. I looked down and saw ocean,

clapping their hands as they got off. (B) Mom and I followed what they did without knowing why.
Dad later told me that it is an old tradition celebrating a safe arrival. Interesting! The air was
certainly cold but refreshing. Mr. Nielsen was waiting for us in the arrival zone. He looked very kind.
He drove us to his home near the airport. Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, looked quite modern
and clean. (C) It means "welcome" in Greenlandic. That evening we had dinner at their home. They
cooked suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic stew. Ms. Nielsen told us it was made from whale meat
with chopped onions, carrots, mushrooms, and several grains such as barley. (D) The flavor was a
bit strong and the meat was chewy, but I liked it. While having dinner, the Nielsens told us about
some Greenlandic traditions. (E) When I said I wanted to learn more, they suggested that we go to
the National Museum of Greenland together.

When I go out of the Hab, however, things are not so optimistic. I cannot find the satellite dish. It
could be kilometers away. The MAV is gone. The crew took it up to Hermes in orbit. The MDV is
left, and there is damage on the main body. Both ⓐrovers are almost completely buried in sand, but
they seem okay. I will be able to dig them out with a day or so of work. If I (A)do so today. I will
be driving at least one of them at this time tomorrow. The solar cells were covered in sand, but
once I ⓑswept them off, they returned to full efficiency. Whatever I do, I will have plenty of electric
power. What I have to do is sweep them off every few days. Things inside the Hab are great,
thanks to its ⓒsolid design. I did a full ⓓcheckup on the oxygenator. It is perfect. If anything goes
wrong with it, there is a spare I can use. But it is only for emergency use while I repair the main

content. Sagwans were ordered to follow the kings around and ⓒobjectively record everything they

Sagwans could do that ⓓbecause of their freedom of writing guaranteed by law: However, any

The Joseonwangjosillok is the world's longest historical record of a single dynasty. It covers 472
years under 25 kings, from the founder, Taejo, to Cheoljong. ⓐTaejo declared the name of the
kingdom to be Joseon, a tribute to the ancient Korean state of Gojoseon. ⓑThis vast record is made

(A)Today I watched a documentary about the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. It taught me the
Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (also known as Joseonwangjosillok) that were thought to cover the
longest continual period of a single dynasty in the world. The most impressive part for me was the
way the Sillok survived the war. During the Imjin War, all the archives were burned down except for
the one in Jeonju. Then Ahn Ui and Sohn Hongrok went there to save the Sillok. They bought
horses and carts, and moved the Sillok to a remote mountain area. That is how the Sillok survived
the war. I was moved by the men's devotion and courage. Thanks to their efforts, the Sillok was
able to avoid being lost forever.

families. It also deals with politics, economics, culture, geography, and diplomatic relations with
neighboring countries. For example, the Geographical Appendix (Jiriji) to Sejongsillok contains
information about “Usando,” the former name of Dokdo.

The Sillok is ㉠___________________________________. How ⓐwas it able to survive for such a

long time? The secret lies in the preservation system and ⓑour ancestors’ devotion to maintain the
Sillok. When the original copy of a king’s Sillok had been completed, three additional copies were
made, and each one was deposited in a different location: Hanyang (the former name of Seoul),
Chungju, Jeonju, and Seongju. The Sillok in each archive was opened up and aired out once every
two to five years to eliminate moisture ㉡, which prevented the paper from rotting or being eaten by
insects. Despite this elaborate system, the Sillok faced a serious crisis. The Imjin War broke out in
1592, and all the archives were burned except for the one in Jeonju. It, however, ⓒwas soon to be
in danger, too. Then two scholars from a rural town came to rescue the only remaining copy of the
Sillok. They were Ahn Ui and Sohn Hongrok. ⓓIt was impossible for them to move the 60 wooden
containers of documents by themselves. They sold their properties to buy horses and carts, and
gathered many people. Everybody worked together to move the Sillok to a remote mountain area, ⓔ
where they defended it for 370 days. For not a single day did they stop guarding it. ㉢Without their
efforts, the Sillok might have been lost forever.
