Section A:
Ibanda University is currently using manual information systems to track students’ and lecturers’
attendance and performance. There are no defined parameters to explain why some students get first
classes, and upper second degrees while others suffer with several retakes to be able to graduate with pass
degrees. After realizing the problem and its significance that are affecting Ibanda University, the School of
Computing and Engineering proposed to develop a biometric mobile application. The School of
Computing and Engineering is in the process of designing and developing a biometric Mobile student
attendance application (BMSAA). This mobile application will automate major business processes of the
identified problem.
Use this scenario to answer all questions in this section;
1) Using the Problem-Solving Framework write a clear problem statement for the above case
scenario. (5 Marks).
2) How best would you systematically solve the business problem in 1 clearly pointing out the
specific methods? (5 Marks)
3) Describe the system boundary for the Biometric mobile student’s attendance app (5 Marks)
4) Suggest possible requirements to achieve an efficient and effective Biometric mobile student
attendance app (10Marks)
5) Using the Mnemonic “SCOPE” state the Terms of reference for the Biometric mobile student’s
attendance app (5 Marks)
6) If the recommended Biometric mobile student’s attendance app has a one-time cost of $5,000 to
install the application and will save the school $2,500 per year at a discount rate of 10% for the
next 3 years. Considering the Net Present Value (NPV) of these costs and benefits, is the
installation of the Biometric mobile student attendance app feasible? Justify your answer (5
Marks)
7) Draw the data flow diagram at level 0 for the Biometric mobile student’s attendance application (5
Marks)

Section B:
Question 1
a) List and describe at least nine (9) factors considered in the design specifications for a new
system. Give at least two examples for each one. (10 Marks)
b) Ramathan clinic: a national chain of budget healthcare clinics, is creating an information
system that will allow patients and doctors at participating franchises to communicate online.
The goal of the system is to allow doctors to respond to minor health questions quickly and
more efficiently, saving patients unnecessary visits to the clinic. This will be a major
procedural change. What steps would you recommend to this company to ensure user
acceptance of the system? (10 Marks)
Question 2
a) Discuss the role and influence the user plays in software development (10 Marks)
b) You are an IT project manager for an advertising firm. The firm wishes to create an online
tool that will be used to survey focus group reactions to products in development. The most
important consideration for the firm is being able to offer the tool as soon as possible as a
new corporate service. However, you know that many of the senior managers that are
business owners of this project have difficulty in understanding technical or software
development issues, and are likely to change their requirements during the course of
development. What development method would be most successful for this project and
explain how it works (10 Marks)
Question 3
a) The small publishing company you work for wants to create a new database for storing
information about all of their author contracts. What factors will influence how you design the
database? (10 Marks)
b) You have been hired by a national furniture leasing company to implement its first business
intelligence systems and infrastructure. To prepare for your initial report, describe the types of data
in their firm they can use to support business intelligence and the systems that you will implement
to support both their power users and casual users, and explain how these systems or tools work
together (10 Marks)
Question 4
a) Justine who is undertaking her PHD studies at Makerere University on an application of
systems dynamics modelling to immunization policy analysis is using various methods to
understand her problem. Her supervisors have encouraged her to first review 30 articles related
to her topic to conceptualize her research background. After coming up with a conceptual
framework, she was told to go for preliminary investigations using a questionnaire and
interviews. After the preliminary stage, she was told to go for field studies and use critical
success factors. Use this scenario to answer the following questions;
i. Clearly evaluate the 5 (five) information-gathering methods that Justine used (10
Marks)
ii. Which other 3 (three) quick information-gathering methods Justine would have used to
maintain her scheduled research plan and why for each method? (6 Marks)
b) Differentiate between intangible and tangible benefits and list three examples of each. In what
types of systems are intangible benefits more predominant? (4 Marks)
Question 5
a) You are working as a project manager for a small IT consulting firm and have been asked to
create a plan for reviewing and auditing completed projects in order to gauge their success.
What factors will you use to measure the success of a project? What questions would you ask
in order to understand why a project succeeded or failed?
b) You are consulting for the information technology division of Ibanda university to guide and
facilitate the design of a new system for handling students’ applications, which has previously
been handled entirely with a paper-based process. They would like to set up a system by which
prospective students can apply online. Describe in detail their first steps and any studies they
should perform before designing the new information system (10 Marks)
Question 6
a) When opening a credit card account, one of three conditions applies to how much discount you get
on all your day’s purchases. If you are a new customer opening a credit card account then you will
get a 15% discount. If you are an existing customer and you hold a loyalty card, you get a 10%
discount. If you have a coupon, you can get 20% off (but it can’t be used with the ‘new customer’
discount) on all your day’s purchases. Discount amounts are added, if applicable. Construct a
decision tree to analyze the process of issuing discounts to credit card holders (5 Marks)
b) How will the analysis using a decision tree enhance the system development of opening a credit
card account? (5Marks)
c) You’re a market manager of MTN Ugandan and there is a need to decide how to treat clients
according to three characteristics: Gender, City Dweller, and age group: A (under 30), B (between
30 and 60), and C (over 60). The company has four products (W, X, Y, and Z) to test the market.
Product W will appeal to female city dwellers. Product X will appeal to young females. Product Y
will appeal to Male middle-aged shoppers who do not live in cities. Product Z will appeal to all but
older females.” (5Marks)
d) Between a decision tree and a decision table, which one would best represent the decision
analysis? Justify your answer. [ 5 Marks] Hint: Analyze the scenario based on when it would
be appropriate to use these techniques
