LinkedIn Connections
Your connections are the people in your LinkedIn network.
Your network is made up of your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree connections, as well as fellow
members of your LinkedIn Groups.
• 1st degree connections: People directly connected to
you because you have accepted their invitation to
connect, or they have accepted your invitation.
• 2nd degree connections: People who are connected to
your 1st degree connections.
• 3rd degree connections: People who are connected to
your 2nd degree connections.
• Fellow members of your LinkedIn Groups: People who are considered part of your
network because you are members of the same Group.
• LinkedIn members (out of network): LinkedIn members who fall outside the
categories listed above.

• Go to the “My Network” tab. You will see your current connections on the left.
• Click on “Continue” or “More options” to see how LinkedIn may help you grow your
network.
• Review your Pending Invitations and “Recommended for you” potential connections to
add connections to your LinkedIn network.

People Search
If you are looking for a particular person, use the Search Bar at the top of your Home
Page to find specific people.
You will see results as well as options to refine your search.
• Click on “People” to refine your search to only people who are named “John Roberts.”
• Refine your search further by using filters.

Job Search
• Click on the “ Jobs” icon on the Menu Bar to open the Jobs page.
• Use the search field to search jobs by title, skills or company.
• Use “AND,” “OR,” and “NOT” Boolean filters if desired.
• Matching results will appear. From this page, you may apply filters, review jobs, save
jobs, create job alerts, or apply to jobs.

Applying for Jobs
Jobs listed on LinkedIn may offer two options for an application: via LinkedIn “Easy Apply”
or via the company website with the “Apply” button. Follow the directions preferred by
the job poster; or contact them.

LinkedIn offers tools for those looking to hire. Highlights of these tools include:

• Contact anyone via InMail.
• Post jobs.

• Integration with company Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
• Referrals: Recruiters source candidates faster in LinkedIn Recruiter by seeing who knows their
employees via the Referrals-enabled Company Connections spotlight.

Company Search
With LinkedIn, you may also look for companies.
• To search for a company by name, type the name of the company into the Home
Page Search Bar, and select the one you are looking for.
Once you find your target company, you
may browse their jobs, read about the
company, “Follow” the company to receive
news updates, and find 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Browse and connect with

LinkedIn Groups
Become an active member, connect with other Group members, increase your
visibility, and find new connections with common interests.
To search LinkedIn Groups:
• On the Home Page’s Search Bar, type the name or keywords for the Group(s) you are
looking for (i.e., “Logistics”).
• Hit “Enter.”
• From the results page, select “Groups.”
Those Groups that contain the word
for which you originally searched
will show in the results page:

LinkedIn Groups
Those Groups of which you are a member may be seen and managed from the
“Groups” icon found under the “Work” option on the Home Page Menu Bar.
From this page, you may talk to your Group members, start a
new Group, join your Groups’ conversations, etc.

Hashtags
Hashtags on LinkedIn help you discover topics and interests relevant to you and allow you
to engage with them. All Hashtags start with a “#” sign followed by a keyword or phrase.
Examples: #Productivity, #Careers, #SocialEntrepreneurship, or #Innovation.
• Use Hashtags when you start a new post, share a
post, or write an article. This will increase the
visibility of your posts.
• Find Hashtags that you would like to follow by
typing them into the Home Page Search Bar. By
following hashtags of personal interest, you’ll
start seeing relevant updates in your feed that
include those topics.
You may also find Hashtags by clicking on the “My
Network” icon at the top of your LinkedIn Home
Page and scrolling to the bottom of “Manage my
network” to see Hashtags trending in your network.

LinkedIn offers functional and technical support to all its members.
To use the LinkedIn Help function:
• Click on the “Me” icon on the LinkedIn Home Page Menu Bar.

• Use the Search Bar to perform help searches, Ask the Help Community, or Open Help
in a new tab to look for answers to your LinkedIn questions.
