What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a global online tool that acts as a


networking portal between its members, with a
wide array of services supporting that networking
platform, such as people and company research and
a job search engine, among others.

A LinkedIn profile is the equivalent of a 45-second


elevator pitch, plus your resume, a marketing
statement, your business card, recommendations,
and keywords.

LinkedIn URL

As a LinkedIn member, you will receive your own public profile URL. LinkedIn allows
you to customize this link to a simple URL that you may use on your email signature,
resume, business card, etc.

To customize your LinkedIn URL:


• On your profile page, click on “Edit your
public profile” (top right).

• Edit the LinkedIn-provided URL by clicking


on the pencil (edit) icon.

• Customize your URL by typing your


name/last name in the text box and
saving the changes.

to find you based on their filters, including “Open to” career
interests when they are searching for profiles.

• Click on the down arrow next to “Open to” and select “Finding a new job.”
• Define your “Add job preferences” criteria (job titles, location, and job type).
• Select “Recruiters only” or “All LinkedIn members” and add to profile.

Increase your profile’s visibility and your chances of being found by recruiters by adding
skills to the “Skills & Endorsements” section. These skills are part of your optimized keyword
list. You may add up to 50 skills.

• Add new skills by clicking on the pencil icon to the right of the section.
• In this section, your skills may be “endorsed” by others based on their knowledge of
your abilities.

To endorse others: Open the profile of the connection you would like to endorse, look for
their “Skills & Endorsements” section, find the skill you would like to endorse, and click on
the “+” sign.

Ask to be recommended
Ask your connections to recommend you for the work you have done to validate the
information in your profile, which could be compared with printed letters of
recommendation. To ask for a recommendation (from your own profile):

Every time you create and share a post, upload a video, create and manage a professional
online event, or write an article, you are at the forefront of your network. These activities
increase profile visibility, bring people to your profile, improve the likelihood that you will
be found by your network’s contacts (if your post is shared), and your content could make
an impact on others.

LinkedIn Stories: Only on mobile app, LI members in the US and Canada (for now) can
create Stories to post to their professional Network to stay visible and to remind everyone

Tips to Maximize Your LinkedIn Profile
• Make sure your profile is public, accurate, up to date, and that it highlights your professional
accomplishments; proofread all content. Your profile should have:
• A professional profile picture.
• A headline that functions as a branding statement: It emphasizes any keywords you
want to use to promote yourself.
• A summary that tells people who you are and what you know.
• Your work history, in reverse chronological order, emphasizing accomplishments.
• A standardized writing style, and no typos!
• Update your profile and/or LinkedIn activity often to stay relevant.
• Connect with coworkers, as they are familiar with your skills and could recommend you or
endorse your skills on LinkedIn.
• You want to be found by recruiters and hiring managers, so optimize your keywords!
• Check your LinkedIn Messages as well as your personal email daily.
• Add your LinkedIn profile URL to your personal email signature and your resume – it will drive
people to click on it and see your LinkedIn profile.
• Network (online and face to face) with your LinkedIn contacts!
• Using LinkedIn regularly will not only make you more visible, but also help you stay abreast of
LinkedIn profile/function updates.

LinkedIn offers functional and technical support to all its members.
To use the LinkedIn Help function:

• Click on the “Me” icon on the LinkedIn Home Page Menu Bar.
• Click on “Help.”
• Use the Search Bar to perform help searches, Ask the Help Community, or Open
“Help” in a new tab to look for answers to your LinkedIn questions.
