Rollo may

Father of existential psychotherapy

Focus – meaning of expectance through ‘love and will’
Human Dilemma not in sense of a problem but in the sense of
- Polarities
- Tensions
- Paradoxes
Which marks human existence

May's stages of development are:

1. Innocence: The pre-egoic, pre-self-conscious stage of infancy.

2. Rebellion: The stage where people seek inner strength but don't understand the responsibility
that comes with freedom.

3. Ordinary: The stage where people learn from their mistakes and recognize their errors, but find
the responsibility of adulthood too demanding.

4. Creative: The stage where people transcend egocentrism and are authentic adults.

Stages are not linear, a child can be innocent, ordinary or creative at times and a adult can be rebellious
at times .

Rollo May- Love & Will

He identify Daimonic as the basic motivational Construct.

The Daimonic is the entire system of motives, different for each individual and is composed of a
collection of specific motives called daimons (greek = little gods)

Daimons = bad/good

Diamons include lower needs such as food and sex as well as higher needs such as love.

May said a diamons was anything that could take over the person a situation he referred to as a
diamonic possession.
One of the most important diamons was Eros. Eros is a love but not sex. It is good thing like any Daimon
until it takes over the personality and until we become obsessed with it.

• May postulated concept ‘will’

• The ability to organize oneself in order to achieve once goal.

• Will is used synonymously with the ego and reality testing will also has its store of energy as in
ego psychology.

• May propose that will, too, is a dimonic that can potentially take over the person.

• The ability to make wishes come true is another definition of will playful imagine of possibilities
are wishes and they are manifestation of our diamons mini wishes comes from Eros but will is
the integral aspect of any activity hands

• 3 personality types emerge out of will

1. Neopuritan types - is all will but no love .

2. Infantile type- they are all wishes but no will

Creative type- a balance of these to aspect of personalities
