CHAPTER VII: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the study
entitled “Innovative Soil Reinforcement: Assessing the Effectiveness of Katsa Fabric in Marikina's Urban
Landscape”

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

After thoroughly conducting various experimentations, several findings were obtained to assess the
viability of using Katsa fabric as geotextile reinforcement for the soil in Barangka, Marikina City. Firstly,
the soil samples that contain Katsa fabric showed both statistical significance and insignificance from the
two experiments. Experiment 1, which consisted of soils with Katsa fabric at the top and bottom layer,
displayed an increase in the strength of the soil samples in terms of shearing. In comparison with the
second experiment, which contains soil with geotextile at the mid-layer, it was unable to exhibit a
significant increase in shear strength. Secondly, both experiments conducted did not exhibit a significant
result in terms of deformation resistance of the soil when under shearing. Thirdly, based on the t-testing
conducted for both experiments 1 and 2, it is identified that placing the Katsa fabric at the top and
bottom layer of the soil proved to be the most effective for increasing the soil shear strength.
Furthermore, it can also be said that placing more Katsa fabric in a soil layer could also equate to an
increase in shear strength of soils. Lastly, in light of the first experimentation, the shear strength of the
soil samples with fabric was able to attain above satisfactory p-value, which implies that the Katsa fabric
can increase the shear strength of soils.

CONCLUSION

On the basis of the aforementioned findings in the study, a number of conclusions are drawn. Firstly,
Katsa fabric can increase the shear strength of soil when it is at its optimum location. When applied in
conjunction with urban development practices, the fabric can further enhance soil cohesion and reduce
erosion due to its ability to hold fine particles. Furthermore, it has a high potential to address the
problem of eroded urban soils. Therefore, the tensile strength, workability, and environment-friendliness
of the material make it suitable for use as soil reinforcement. Secondly, the improvement of the soil
shear strength is significantly affected by the configuration of the Katsa fabric. Based on the findings,
putting the Katsa fabric at the top and bottom is the optimal position for the fabric that yields the best
reinforcement. In addition, having more than one Katsa fabric layer can also contribute to better shear
strength for the soil.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the formulated conclusions, several recommendations are offered by the experimenters.
Firstly, it is recommended for future studies to conduct the experiment on a larger scale and its
performance in the field in order to verify the results of the laboratory testing. Secondly, it is hoped that
the future researchers would explore other areas of Katsa fabric as geotextile such as its ability in
drainage and soil erosion. Thirdly, future experiments should conduct long-term durability tests to
ascertain the nature of Katsa's performance and endurance under extreme environmental conditions.
Finally, comparative studies are encouraged to be done to assess Katsa fabric's performance relative to
other soil reinforcement materials such as geotextiles, synthetic fabrics, and natural ones. It would
contribute to a better understanding of the cost-efficiency, environmental impact, and effectiveness of
Katsa in terms of soil stabilization.
