SESSION-2021-22

MODEL PAPER SECOND TERM EXAMS

Class-10 + 2
Subject- English
Time : 3 hrs M.M 50
Note : All the questions are compulsory. Observe word limit
wherever prescribed.
Section-A (Writing)
Q.1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the ques-
tions that follow :
1. Youth in any country form its backbone. It is on youth’s shoulder
that the responsibility for change, progress and innovations lies. Youth
are starry eyed full of idealism and bubbling with energy to honestly
fight for cause. Every age suffers from the conservation of its elders.
It is the youth only who have the necessary courage and initiative to
break the taboos and crippling practices. Mao Tung of China realised
the latent power and dedication of the youth of his country. He,
therefore, entrusted them with cultural Revoultion-a movement in-
tended to weed out the deadwood in the party, who stood for sta-
tus quo. Again in our own country, our youth played a significant
role in the freedom struggle and made considerable sacrifices.
2. But, unfortunately, since the attainment of independence, the youth
in the country have been going adrift. They have not been associ-
ated with the contemporary national problems.
52
3. We are well aware of the extensive damage that is being done to the
fabric of our national structure by the parochial thinking along caste
and communal lines. It is time, we shed partison prejudices and
worked jointly for the progress of the country.
4. Another nagging problem that India faces today is that of popula-
tion explosion. In a country, where every minute a child is born, all
planning is bound to come to naught. All economic progress is cer-
tain to be nullified by the increase in the population. With ever-
increasing mouths to feed, the government’s efforts to strengthen
the economic situation have yielded poor results.
5. Another important task that the youth can successfully undertake is
to eliminate the curse of dowry. Dowry is responsible for a large
number of deaths of innocent married girls and harassment of the
parents of marriageable daughters. The youth both boys and girls
should take pledge not to give and accept dowry. Also, they can
force their parents to stop this undesirable practice.

(a) maintaining the status quo
(b) obeying the orders of Mao Tse Tung
(c) removing the deadwood in the party

53
III. What can cause an extensive damage to national fabric ?
(a) Thinking along caste and communal lines
(b) The partisan prejudices
(c) All working jointly for national development
(d) Both (a) and (b)
IV. The nagging problem that India faces today as per the passage is :
(a) The high death rate (b) Economic progress
(c) Drug addiction (d) Population Explosion
4×1 = 4
B. Find the words from the given choices that have the same meanings:

2. Freedom
(a) Justice (b) Peace
(c) Independence (d) Slavery
3. Eliminate
(a) Remove (b) Include
(c) Provide (d) join 3×1 = 3
Q.2. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that
follow :
1. To date happiness has defied definition. Most people tend to equate
54
happiness with fun, good living, plenty of money. If happiness were
synonyms with all this, rich people with all their luxuries and count-
less parties, would be perpetually happy. But in actual fact, they are
frequently, acutely unhappy, despite their riches and ability to in-
dulge in fun activities at will. Fun is what we experience during as
act; happiness is that intangible something we experience after an
act. We may have fun watching a movie, going shopping, meeting
friends-these are all fun activities that afford us fleeting moments of
relaxation and enjoyment. Happiness, on the other hand, is a much
stronger, deeper and more abiding emotion.
2. If we perceive happiness as the ultimate goal, we must also devise a
way to reach that goal. The way to happiness is not a smooth, broad
highway along which we can cruise at a comfortable speed. It is a
path through rocky and rugged terrain and the going can become
very tough at times. At these times we have to roll up our sleeves
and with pitchfork and shovel make our way onwards. This pursuit
of happiness lasts a lifetime. Great happiness is earned only by great
effort and effort not in spurts but diligent, constant effort.
3. Happiness is not a permanent vacation. Another prevalent belief is
that if one were rich enough not to have to work, one would be
blissfully happy. But a job is more than just a pay cheque. Almost all
religions teach us that work is worship. Work holds the key to hap-
piness as doing something which increases confidence and self-
worth. It brings on a feeling of satisfaction, of doing something, of
contributing.

55
4. A secret ingredient of happiness is contentment. Contentment here
does not mean apathy or lack of ambition, just as commitment does
not mean curtailment of freedom. Contentment teaches us to give
so that we may receive and contentment helps us to cherish the gifts
we have received. These things are worth a try even if they don’t
promise access to the pinnacle of success. Success, after all, has
been described as getting what one wants, whereas happiness is
liking what one gets.
