PART ONE : READING
Children are the new face of war
Ismael Beah was fourteen years old when he was recruited into an army in Sierra
Leone’s civil war in West Africa. He was told that his entire family had been killed and that he
could seek revenge against the killers by joining the fight. The teen soldier fought for three years
and grew comfortable with a gun. In the war, he learned that a gun was a power in your hand.
However, war and killing eventually sickened him. “These things made your feeling of humanity
disappear.” He later said to a UN special reporter.
When the war ended, Ismael was placed in a UNICEF rehabilitation center. At first, he made only slow
progress to reintegrate social life. He defied his teachers and guardians. “We thought that civilians had no authority
over us,” he said. With time, Ismael started going to school and listening to the teachers. He spent eight months at
the rehabilitation center. There he went to therapy, which brought up feelings of shame and guilt in him. Gradually,
he integrated into society and now he studies in the United States.
Ismael’s story of being forced into army as a child is not extraordinary. Some 300.000 children in some 300
conflicts across the globe are fighting in armies and rebel movements. Both UNO and UNICEF have declared “child
soldiers” as criminal and intolerable. They are taking initiatives to prevent the recruitment of children and
rehabilitate the young victims. Ismael is now twenty and deeply committed to helping others who suffered his fate.
He says, “I go through the pain of recounting my misfortune to show that the kids who are forced to become soldiers
can regain normal life.

Topic 1: Children’s Rights.
Everyday, many children all over the world are suffering from the violations that are committed against them. I
am here to talk about this problem and the children’s rights.
First, there is no peace on earth because the world is full of wars and conflicts. Consequently, many children
suffer. They live in war and they see death everyday. They have no home, no food and no protection. They suffer
from hunger, cold and disease and also violence.
Some of them are orphans and some are abandoned. Some others are recruited as children soldiers to fight in
civil war. They given a gun and learn to kill or be killed. Some children are kidnapped and enslaved by shameless kid
owners.
There are very young children in the world who are victim of child labour. If they don’t work, they don’t eat. No
one of them plays. No one of them goes to school. They are exploited and beaten.
Children are small human beings with their full rights. So, we must give them their rights. They have the right
to education, to health care, to family affection and to happiness. It is a crime to steal their childhood. We must stop
wars.
I hope that one day war and violence on earth will stop so that all the children will live free, happy and in peace.
Topic 2: Clothes and fashion
Our clothes tell a lot about us. They play an important part in our life because they reflect our personality and
feelings.
Clothes can tell who you are because they show a person’s style, taste and education. People who follow fashion
always dress well and with the latest clothes. They don’t care about good taste or good look. What matters for them
is being fashionable in society.
However, people who dress with good taste and better style are more elegant. They are attractive and inspire
respect.
People with style tell us who they really are; but fashion people tell us who they would like to be.
Our clothes can even show if we are happy or sad because they reflect our state of mind. For example, looking
bad, dressing badly or forgetting about our hair can be a sign of depression. Our appearance may even reveal the
way we think: If we are religious, liberal or conformist.
