This chapter focuses on the design, tools, and research methods to be used in
gathering sufficient amounts of data and information. The contents of this chapter would
include the research design, the sampling and the specific participants for the study as well as
the instruments, and treatment of the data gathered.
I. Interview Guide: The interview guide was formulated based on desired information that is related to
the topic and specific problem of the study. There will be two main questions that will guide the
interviewer as to the desired direction of the interview. Follow up questions not listed in the interview
guide may be asked if it aims to clarify the participants’ answer.
A. The first question will determine who are the students living outside Benguet?
B. The second question will try to know what are the challenges faced by students who are

The interview guide was crafted based on related literature that allows the researchers to have sets of
predetermined answers to the research question. As to its content validity, the research adviser and an expert
in the field will check the relevance and completeness of this material.
II. Interview: The researchers utilized semi-structured interviews to complement the research design. The
interview guide was sourced from publications that are relevant to the study. The adviser of this
research has evaluated the interview guides’ relevancy for the validity of its contents. The researchers
also used survey questionnaires using the SOP as the guide or basis for the gathering of data, survey
questions were open-ended for easier analysis of data and are answerable in the participant's native
language or own structure of language or words. The researcher will use a printed interview
questionnaire to be given face-to-face to obtain information from the participants to formulate
conclusions and recommendations for the study.
III. Recorder: The researchers made use of a recorder to make the study more valid and credible. The
participants received consent forms to acknowledge their participation and whether or not they would
allow any form of recording.
All of the interview guide and interview questions will be written in the English language for
easier comprehension and to prevent confusion on the part of the participants.
To seek approval to conduct the study, the researchers will follow applicable procedures as well as its
ethical considerations to obtain the objectives of the study. The researcher will be submitting a request letter
to conduct study to the Dean, subject teacher, and panel members of the SCJPS department of the University
of Baguio to ask for their permission and approval. The study will soon be put into action when the Dean, the
subject teacher, and the panel members approve the researcher’s request regarding the data gathering. The
researcher will give the printed interview guide to the subject teachers of SCJPS department and will ask for

help in disseminating the printed interview questionnaire to be answered by the participants anytime but not
during their class hours, and the participants may be asked to submit the questionnaire to their class marcher.
The participants of the research will be selected using purposive sampling , an informed consent will be
disseminated prior to the study. The researchers will be explaining that the participants have the right to
withdraw whenever they feel the need to do so. In this way the participants are aware that the researchers
value confidentiality and the ethical considerations of conducting research.
Treatment Of Data
The data was acquired using an interview guide given to first-year criminology students. The
researchers used narrative analysis, a method of interpreting study participants' experiences for possible
questionnaire responses in order to identify common problems and participant’s adaptation strategies.
Ethical Considerations
As the study requires human participation, it is essential to ensure the privacy of every participant. Ethical
considerations serve as guidelines in fulfilling the truthfulness, knowledge, and without error in
misinterpreting the information gathered. Informed permission and confidentiality are two important ethical
considerations that were taken into account during the research process. The universal language will be used
in the forms and questionnaires in order to maintain the professional manner, while the Filipino language will
be used in communication to lessen the chances of misunderstanding that would definitely lead to unreliable
information. It will be made clear that participation is entirely optional and that participants are free to end it
whenever they choose without feeling pressured to. In order to gain the agreement of the chosen participants,
the researchers will make sure that every relevant detail is communicated so that the respondents are aware of
how essential it is for them to complete the research. Before they answer the survey, the participants will be
fully informed about the goals of this research. Participants will be given the guarantee that their answers will
remain anonymous, and that no information gathered will be distributed to parties other than the study group.
Also the researcher will ensure not to violate plagiarism and if instances occur, the researcher will remove it.

After the study is completed, the participants will be informed about the result of the study.
9. Target Beneficiaries
- This study will benefit the students by educating them and by letting them be aware of the possible
positive ways of adaptation strategies. It can teach them better and proper ways of dealing with
challenges. Finally they would be more knowledgeable by the end of the study regarding the
adaptation strategies of their fellow students and know the best way to deal with those challenges
when they themselves experience it.
2. Instructors of SCJPS
- This study may benefit the teachers by giving them knowledge of the possible challenges the students
are facing while studying away from home, for it can help them formulate and apply solutions to these
problems. The teachers would understand the students a whole lot better. Finally, the teachers can use
some of the positive ways of adaptation strategies to help out with some of the challenges they are
facing.
3. School
- The University of Baguio may benefit from this study by becoming aware of the state that their
students are in and what they are going through. The school would be able to adjust for the mental
health and well-being of the students especially in this time where there are bound to be problems that
will arise as a result of studying away from home.
