Why Arts Matter

A. Choose the correct answer by crossing (X) a, b, c, d, or e!
Text for questions number 1 to 3
The Traditional Art
It is great that digital art has come about, but it is only another medium that humans have
developed. Digital art will be used by millions of artists from now on, but it will never
completely replace traditional art.
Firstly, when new mediums are discovered, old ones remain. Think of all the fantastic art
created by our artsy-craftsy ancestors. For thousands of years, humans have been creating art.
The earliest artworks were paintings on cave walls (The Original Gangsta of traditional media).
Fast forward a few millennia and we had Tomb paintings in Ancient Egypt, The Byzantine
mosaics of Europe, and then came the paintings, sculptures, and sketches created by Da Vinci,
Donatello, Botticelli, Michaelangelo, and Raphael. More recently there was cubism and
modern art in the 1900s. These were Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol.
Then, traditional art is historically too important to replace. Traditional artworks have been
celebrated for centuries and, up until this very day, have been exhibited in museums for
hundreds of years. People don't go to Ikea to marvel at their best-selling paintings. People go
to art galleries and museums.
Finally, the art collectors' market will never lose interest in traditional art. The prices of
some artworks have gotten a tad out of hand. In 2017, one of Jean-Michel Basquiat's paintings,
"Untitled", sold for $110.5 million. The most expensive artwork ever sold was Leonardo da
Vinci's "Salvatore Mundi", which was sold for $450 million. The art collectors' market is
showing no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, digital art hasn't reached this level of value.
Traditional art has a long and rich history. Museums and galleries all over the world are
filled with paintings. And people with way too much money keep buying up da Vincis and
Basquiats for squillions of dollars.

Transportation Activities
Transportation is defined by experts as a derivative need from various economic and social
activities. Different types of socio-economic activities will have different impacts on
transportation activities.
Daily transportation activities cause repetitive movements, for example, what happens to
workers and those studying at school. In Yogyakarta, traffic jams occur every day at points
where workers and students move from their homes to work for sites and schools.
Recurring traffic jams in the long term tend to occur during the holiday and Eid season. At
the arrival and departure stages, severe traffic jams will occur on roads outside the city. During
this period, congestion can be felt in the city center as a place to stay and as a tourist
destination (such as Malioboro, and Prawirotaman), as well as roads leading to tourist
attractions.
The dominant daily traffic jams are caused by community activities in the internal sphere.
Congestion that repeats every day is an excess of the pattern of living, working, and going to
school. Effort to bring the residence location closer to the location of the activity is one
solution that can be done. The form can be in the form of providing housing incentives in the
form of rented or owned flats that are quite comfortable for activities. So far, it seems that
there has been no systematic effort to regulate the pattern of activities.

Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with
learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress.
Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language
learning.
Firstly, "the song stuck in my head" phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song
we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc.) can be both enjoyable and
sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on
our short-andlong term memory.
Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition,
which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes
them many times more motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can
be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as
any other literary sample.
Furthermore, listeners can choose appropriate song for their own purpose. Most pop songs
and probably many other types don't have precise people, place or time reference.
In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun and encourage harmony
within oneself and within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining
culture, religion, patriotism and revolution.
Finally, yet importantly, we can do many learning activities with songs such as studying
grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary,
spelling, and culture.
From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs,
learning English can be enjoyable and fun.

Graffiti Vandalism
Graffiti vandalism is a crime. It is the act of marking or defacing premises or other property
without permission.
Graffiti vandalism significantly affects individuals and the community. The removal and
prevention of graffiti vandalism are very costly to the community. Tens of millions of taxpayer
dollars are being spent annually on cleaning up graffiti and repairing the damage that it causes.
Spending this public money on cleaning graffiti means that money is not being spent on things
that can benefit the community.
Graffiti vandalism can also make people feel unsafe. A recent survey conducted by the
Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that 21 per cent of the respondents in NSW perceived
graffiti to be a social disorder problem in their local area.
Graffiti vandalism can be a dangerous activity. Graffiti is often applied in dangerous
locations, such as along train tracks, train corridors, and train tunnels. The Independent
Transport Safety and Reliability Regulator (ITSRR) has reported that the majority of recorded
rail fatalities are trespassers on the rail network.
Graffiti may also be affecting the health of those who do it because they breathe in fumes
from aerosol paint. It could also be affecting the environment because of the chemicals being
used to remove it.
Questions:
1. Why is graffiti vandalism?

2. How are the removal and prevention of graffiti vandalism?

3. What for is the tens of millions of taxpayer dollars?

4. Why is graffiti considered a dangerous activity?

5. What is the effect of aerosol paint?
