VectaStar Gigabit

Radio Controller
Datasheet
The VectaStar Radio Controller (RC) is a 1U 19-inch rack-mounted indoor unit that serves as a flexible,
intelligent switch for multiple VectaStar VS600, ODU-S and ODU-GE Access Points (APs). Traffic from up to
200 Remote Terminals (RTs) in multiple sectors is aggregated and switched in the RC, according to operator
selected QoS classes, onto Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The RC is a high capacity
platform, incorporating programmable high speed logic allowing software upgradability for future performance
enhancements and support of new network standards. All interfaces and services are on the front panel.

KEY FEATURES
• High capacity aggregation switch and radio controller with 20Gbps backplane capacity
• Flexible interfaces including 10 x 1GigE SFP for GE and STM-1 connections
• 2 x 10GigE SFP+ for core interconnections
• Increases VS600, ODU-S & ODU-GE Access Point ZFS sector capability from 16* to 63 Remote
Terminals
• Supports up to 200 Remote Terminals in up to 8 sectors, in 1U
• Supports AP redundancy (1+1 & 2+0) and full redundancy (RC 1+1 and AP redundancy, 1+1 & 2+0)
• Supports X2 traffic switching, low latency and flat networking for LTE/LTE-A networks

All traffic interfaces are SFP-based providing maximum interface flexibility. Eight Gigabit Ethernet (GE) ports
are used to connect VSG APs and two more can be used for core network interconnections. Two SFP+ 10
Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) ports are also provided for core network interconnection to accommodate total
aggregate rates from multiple VS600 AP sectors exceeding 1 Gbps. The RC’s high capacity backplane
supports up to approximately 20 Gbps sustained operation between any set of GE ports and 10GE ports. The
RC is easily managed by means of two RJ45 10/100BASE-T ports or a DB9 serial port. In-band management
on the GE or 10GE core network connections is also supported.
Up to 8 AP sectors can be controlled by a single RC and while an AP running as ZFS supports up to 16* RTs
per sector, use of the RC increases this capacity up to 63 RTs per sector.
For networks requiring the highest availability, a number of protection features exist, such as 1:1 port
redundancy and controller resilience. If only outdoor unit (AP) redundancy is required, then a single RC can
support up to 4 1+1 redundant pairs of APs or up to 4 2+0 (2 redundant APs operating on different channels)
redundant sectors. Where redundant RCs are used to provide indoor redundancy, up to 4 non-redundant APs
can be supported on each RC. Alternatively, indoor and outdoor redundancy (full redundancy) is possible with
2 RCs supporting either up to 5 1+1 redundant sectors or up to 4 2+0 redundant sectors.
The Radio Controller directly supports TDM services (E1)***. At a multi-sector radio hub, with Radio
Controller, up to 252 E1s can be terminated to the core over up to 4 channelised STM-1 ports (63 E1 per
channelised STM-1 port). TDM core port 1:1 MSP redundancy is supported.
The Radio Controller provides a migration path for VectaStar 2 systems** and gives full compatibility with the
VectaStar VS600, ODU-S and ODU-GE APs and RTs.
