HOMEWORK PREPARATION GUIDE

- Your solutions must be concise but self-explanatory, containing all the details of your
computations/derivations at each step without needing any interpretation of the reader,
otherwise will be considered as "incomplete".
- If you use sources other than the course notes, they should be properly referenced.
- Solutions must be submitted in a written form, prepared professionally, by hand writing using
pen (not pencil) on only one side of clean, white papers of A4 size, each numbered as “page
number / total number of pages” as done in this assignment and personalized by your name and
student number.
- Folder must be saved as Name_Surname_ID in PDF form. Other forms are not be accepted.
Don’t save as Untitled.
- Exchanging ideas with your friends is acceptable but in the end you must present an
independent work i.e. the introduction, names of the variables, programming style, presentation
of the results, comments and discussions must be different.
- Therefore, every assignment paper that you will be handing in should be personalized by fully
and correctly reflecting your own approaches and efforts in it.
- Hence, all duplicate solutions will be disregarded with some serious consequences.

1. A cylindrical riser with diameter-to-length ratio=1 is to be designed for a sand casting mold.
The casting geometry is illustrated in Figure given below in which the units are mm. If the mold
constant in Chvorinov’s rule = 3.36 min/cm2, determine the dimensions of the riser so that it
will take 25% longer for the riser to solidify.

2. Caplets are used to support a sand core inside a sand mold cavity. The design of the caplets and
the manner in which they are placed in the mold cavity surface allows each caplet to sustain a
force of 45 N. Several caplets are located beneath the core to support it before pouring; and
several other caplets are placed above the core to resist the buoyancy force during pouring. If the
volume of the core = 5450 cm3, and the metal poured is steel, determine the minimum number of
caplets that should be placed
(a) beneath the core,
(b) above the core (Sand density = 1.6 g/cm3, steel density = 7.82 g/cm3).
