PART B: THEORY
INSTRUCTION: Read the following passage and answer the
questions below .
When I was a boy we had three houses, which were quite far apart.
At the cattle post, our home was just a rough shelter of poles, grass
and branches. There wasn’t a straight line in it. There was a thorn
fence around it. My brothers and I stayed there when we looked
after the cattle. It didn’t look much like a home, but we managed to
keep comfortable in it.
Our second home was at the ‘lands’. I remember it was much
tidierand neater than our village home. Perhaps this was because
my sisters spent quite a lot of time there. They stayed there when
they were ploughing , planting or harvesting the crops. Lastly, we
had our home in the village, along with all our neighbours. The
family gathered there during the cold season.
Between the walls and the roof there was a gap. A ring of vertical
poles outside the house supported the roof. Branches were tied to
the top of the poles in a horizontal ring. These supported the roof,
which was made of grass and more branches. This house stood in
a courtyard along with several other similar buildings. We loved this
house. It is cool in summer, because the wind could blow between
the walls and roof; but it was warm in the cold season, especially
when we lit a small gre. But that was not often . mama usually
insisted on lighting the gre outside. She said it was safer; it was too
dangerous to light it inside the house. When I was twelve, my father
built a new village house. This one was rectangular in shape. I
remember my sister Sentle cried when she grst saw it; ‘I want my
round house! She cried. But my mother explained that the new
house was better because the furniture gtted inside it better. The
foundations were made of cement, and the walls were made of
bricks. We had a strong new door, painted bright blue, and two
windows with glass in them. There were several rooms inside the
:
house. I remember that when the house was grst built, we still had
a thatched roof, with a metal cone on the top. But later father
replaced the thatch with corrugated iron. He said it was more
water-tight than the thatch. At grst I much preferred the old roof.
The new roof made our house very hot during the day- and when it
rained at night, It made a loud noise and kept us awake. But father
insisted on keeping the new roof. ‘We must move with the time!’ he
said. He was right: we found that when it rained, the water ran
down the roof and glled our water tank.
QUESTIONS
1. Where was the grst house Teboyo mentioned?
2. Where was the second home?
3. Whatever the season, Teboyo loved this house. Can you say
why?
4. Why did Teboyo father buy a corrugated iron roof? Suggest two
reasons.
5. What did Teboyo’s father mean by the words ‘we must move with
the times’?
