REVIEWER: SCIENCE PART OF ENTRANCE EXAM

Lesson 1: Properties of Mixtures

Matter is classified as pure substance or mixture. A substance is made up of atoms and molecules.

It is a form of matter that possesses specific properties. There are two types of elements; elements and
compounds.

Element= made up of a particular kind of atom.

Compound= atoms are bonded together in molecules

Water= is an example of compound <hydrogen and oxygen>

Salt= <sodium and chlorine> (compound)

Substance are called “pure” to set them apart from mixtures. Ex. of substances in pure form: gold,
diamond, sugar

3 general properties of mixtures

1. Components of a mixture retain their original properties= no chemical reaction involved

2. Mixtures combine physically with no definite proportions= can regulate the amount

Components of a mixture can easily be separated= they can be separated by mechanical means

Mechanical means such as filtration and decantation

 Filtration= which solids are separated from liquids or gases using a filter
 Decantation= process which mixtures are separated by removing a liquid layer

Precipitate= separated from a solution or suspension

Types of mixtures

Homogenous= equally distributed

Heterogeneous= not of uniform size which retain its orig properties

CLASSIFICATIONS & USES OF MIXTURES

Phase= distinctive form of matter

Suspension= hetero with particles that are big enough to be seen with the naked eye

Solution= homo which one of the substances is dissolves in another

Solute= substance that dissolves

Solvent= substance which the solute is dissolved

Dissolving= breaks to an atomic or molecular level

Aqueous solution= compound completely dissolves in water

Non-aqueous solution= solvent is not water but another kind of liquid

Concentrated solution= consists of large amount of solute

Diluted solution= large amount of solvent

Colloid= special type of mixture. It appears as a single phase. It consists of slightly bigger particles

Tyndall effect= ability of the colloid to scatter light

*A beam of light simply passes through a solution

Adsorbent= capable of holding molecules

Desiccant= absorbs moisture

SEPARATION OF MIXTURES
Residue= insoluble solid

Insoluble substance= does not dissolve

Chromatography= passing a mixture in a solution or suspension

Capillary action= adhesion of water to filter paper
