APPRECIATION 2.1) Song of the open Road

Ans:- Poet, poem, title. :- ―Song of the open road" is a poem written by great American poet Walt Whitman. Coincidently he was
at top in poetry when Abraham Lincoln was the President who strengthened democracy and liberty in America. We find in the
title a celebration of freedom. Open road is the symbol of freedom.
Theme: The poem is about a free journey of life on an open road. In a cheerful mood the poet is ready to go on a new road with
new hopes. He has given up old bondage, cares and worries. He is content and strong enough to make his own fortune. There is
selfconfidence and determination in him. He will carry sweet memories of some people and places with him. They have become a
part of his life.
The poetic style :- The poem is narrative. It is written in free verse. So there is no regular rhythm or rhyme in it. But there is a
brilliant use of Alliteration, Repetition and Paradox.
Special Features: Easy words to express the stream of thoughts is a special feature of the poem. The open road is symbolically
the free road of life.
Message:- The message given in the poem is that we must have confidence to change the road and go on it to make our fortune.
Do not forget those who have filled your life.
My opinion:- My opinion about the poem is that it very well celebrates, self freedom, self expression and self confidence.

B) Write an appreciation of the poem "Indian Weavers" including the following points-
Ans. 1)About the poem, poet and the title :-"Indian Weavers" is a short melodious poem. It is composed by a great Indian
poetess Sarojini Naidu. Title of the poem indicates that the poet is going to tell about the art of Indian weavers
2)The theme:-The theme of the poem is very simple. The weavers weave three types of garment. They weave them at three
particular times of a day. They relate to three important events in human life. Events are birth, marriage and death. These events
cover three periods of human life- childhood, youth and old age Colours of the three garments are very significant. They suit the
moods related to the events. The weavers too weave the garments in different moods and at different times of a day. They weave
the robes of a newborn child happily in blue colour at early morning. They are excited to weave the marraige veils in bright purple
- green colours late in the evening. Their mood is silent and serious when they weave a white shroud for funeral.
3)Language and style :-Both are simple. There is regular rhyme scheme a-a-b-b. Because of the repetitive use of alliteration and
rhyming words the poem is melodious.
4)Poetic Devices: Pictorial images and similes are used effectively. For example: Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green.
5)Special feature of the poem is that it is melodious from top to bottom. It is like a piece of enchanting music. Choice of words is
perfect. Conversational tone makes the poem live.
6)Message: Involvement in one's work. Three events mentioned in the poem are eternal in human life We have to go through the
three periods-childhood, youth and old age. It is like weaving a cloth of life beautifully and artistically.
7)My personal opinion is that it is memorable poem for its melody, meaning and style.

lives. The use of present participle is remarkable words like, unseeing dropped, stale creates the real word picture of the situation.
5)In toil and sweat, our spirit rise.
For work is worship in disguise
With dedication, we reach our goals
In every task, our purpose unfolds.
Appreciation 2.5) Father returning home
a) About the poem and poet: 'Father Returning Home' by Dilip Chitre is probably the most famous poem by this Indian poet. It
is an autobiographical poem. Here the poet shows the loneliness and world-weariness of an old man in the modern society by
depicting a picture of his own father returning home from work.
The poem is a true account of the poet's father Purushottam Chitre's life in 1957 when he moved from Baroda to
Mumbai. The poem is expressive of the poet's feelings for his father at a later stage. He realized how neglected and uncared-for
his father was, even after being the only one bread-earner for the family.
b) Theme of the poem: The poem 'Father Returning Home' has autobiographical significance. But it has gone beyond it. It is now
an account of any old man who does the hard work for his family but leads a monotonous life where no one is there to take care of
him, to talk with him or to understand his feelings. Alienation, indifference, old age in a modern society, isolation, the generation
gap and the future of the individual in the city are the central things that are shown in this poem.
c) Poetic device: 'Father Returning Home' is a free verse poem. There is no set rhyme scheme and no
dominant metre. There are twenty-four lines. The use of the present participle (Standing, unseeing, getting off, eating etc.) is
remarkable. The tone of the poem shows worthlessness and alienation from outside world. The use of words like unseeing, soggy,
falling apart, dimmed, dropped, stale, estrangement, sullen etc. shows it. There is use of the continuation of a sentence without a
pause beyond the end of a line. It is called 'Enjambment'. The simile 'Like a word dropped from a long sentence in the ninth line is
powerful and worth exploring. The other figures of speech like alliteration, personification and repetition increases the beauty of
the poem.
d) Morals in the poem: Father Returning Home is a dramatic monologue, the voice of a son detailing the scenes from the life of
his father. The poem focuses on the theme of alienation or estrangement experienced by the aged in their twilight years. In the
poem Father Returning Home, the poet talks about his father's loneliness and alienation from the man-made world.

knocking all day at our door. When we have money friends around us. After loosing all money we have no friends.
4) i) Poormen, think I need not go up. so much at rich men Should come down.
ii)About their work from morn till night
5) Friends are worth more than gold
Their worth cannot be bought of sold
money may come and go, but true friends stay
Their presence bring joy and brightens each day.

Appreciation 2.6) Money

a) About the poem and poet: William H. Davies was a Welsh poet and writer. He spent a significant part of his life as a tramp
or hobo in the United Kingdom and the United States. He became a peddler and street singer in England. The poem tells us about
the rich man who wants to be a poor man to find the real happiness. It is when we do not have money or have lost our money; we
realize how important the money is. At the end, the poet says that now he doesn't have money, he has true friends though they
may be few.
b) Special features: The poem 'Money' has five stanzas having four lines in each stanza. Second and third line of each stanza has
rhyming words. The sentence structure many times does not follow the rules. Strange sentence with ambiguous words is the
specialty of this poem.
c) Poetic device: The poem has the rhyme scheme - a b c b. The major figures of speech used in the poem
include-inversion, simile, repetition, onomatopoeia, antithesis etc. The odd lines have rhyming words. d) Message of the poem:
The message of the poem is though money is important in our life; it doesn't give the real friends. To know the harsh reality one
has to experience the poverty. Money gives us many friends but they decrease if we don't have the money. Poor persons have to
face hard life.

ii] The walk of the lady is graceful and charming.

2.
Column A Answer
1] The beauty of the lady is perfect. c] One shade the more, one ray the less, Had impaired the nameless grace
2] The lady‘s eyes have soothing radiance d] The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent,
3] The lady looks beautiful because she is a good a] Thus mellowed to that tender light which heaven to gaudy day denies
natured and kind hearted human being.
4] The lady has shiny black hair and glowing skin b] Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o‘er her face;
3. One of the themes of the poem is harmony. The poet does not directly call her beautiful but she ‗ walks in beauty‘. The
overall beauty is compared to a combination of cloudless climate and starry skies. He says the best of dark and light meet in her
eyes and features. Actually, the beauty visible outside to the eye is because of the purity of her heart and mind. The outer beauty
has to have inner beauty.
4. Imagery of night is used to express the beauty of the eyes, to convey the dim soft light of evening. She is described as beautiful
as the cloudless starry skies.
5. Sweeter than the sweet, harder than a stone,
A friend of mine, who make me strong,
Being a part of my sadness,

3.8 Speech Writing :

1. Hard Work Pays

Hello everyone, today I will be presenting a speech on the value of hard work. Everyone wants to be successful overnight. But
does it happen that way? Not really, because there is no shortcut to success. You cannot go around a hurdle and only through it to
reach success and the way is paved by hard work.

It is easy to harp on about hard work but difficult to really work hard because it takes perseverance and time. No one in today‘s
world is patient enough to take the long winding road to success, everyone wants to be millionaires in a day but let‘s not forget the
saying that ―Rome was not built in a day‖ which tells us about the value of hard work that people knew in the past times. A huge
and impressive empire like Rome could never be built in a day and you cannot reach your goals in a day either. Today
the dependence on technology and the environment we grow up in has reduced the amount of effort we put into things. Everything
is available at a click has made this generation, and I am including myself when I count the whole generation into this, habitual to
taking the easy way out. Be it studies, job or even relationships. People are simply not ready to put in the hard work that is needed
to preserve a relationship, doing a job or getting a degree. This situation sometimes makes me feel that this generation does not
really understand the value of hard work. We want hacks for everything – for life, our chores, jobs and everything else.

But reality does strike us at some point or the other to teach us the harsh lessons of life like the value of hard work. These days
people talk about smart work VS hard work and yes smart work is very good when you know how to use it but it is not and cannot
become a substitute for the hard work one has to do to achieve one‘s goals. It is essential to put the required working hours to
work towards your aspirations and become successful thus this is why hard work is a precious and valuable trait. On this note, I
conclude my speech on the value of hard work. Thank you.
2.An award at a cultural event

This is a very fortunate time for me because we are all here to celebrate the success of finishing our much-anticipated project. I‘m
here to speak on this occasion, and it‘s an honour for me to receive praise and an award for carrying out the most significant and
successful project of the year. I sincerely appreciate the management and the Board‘s wonderful honour and acknowledgement of
me. Receiving the best employer award means a lot to me since it shows that our staff members appreciate and like workingfor
our company.
We internally survey our employees twice a year to find out what we do well and where we can improve.Employees are merely
requested to complete the survey; their department or name is not required. In order to really address the deficiencies, we uphold
this fairness.
I want to thank all of the employees in particular for being so open and honest with us during the survey process. It inspired us to
improve for them, which is why we are present today to accept this award.
Last but not least, of course, receiving this honour would not have been possible without the inspiration and moral support of my
family, who are truly my pillars of strength.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support, as well as to all the internal and
external parties who have a direct or indirect role in the creation and operation of our business.
I‘ll end my speech on this positive note and guarantee that more prizes of similar nature will come. I‘m grateful.

Thank you.

3. Time Management

Dear teachers and students!

Greetings to all. And thank you to all of you to give me chance to give a speech.
The practise of planning and arranging how to distribute time effectively and efficiently is known as time
management.Setting goals, prioritising activities, and making a timeline to complete those tasks are all part of the
process.Effective time management is critical for personal and professional success. It enables us to do more tasks in less time,
decreases stress, and boosts overall productivity. Setting clear and defined goals is one of the keys to good time management.
You can prioritise your work and focus on what is most essential if you have a clear notion of what you want to
accomplish. Prioritizing tasks is another crucial part of time management. Not all activities are created equal, therefore it is crucial
to distinguish which chores are the most important and must be finished first. This may be accomplished by employing tools such
as the Eisenhower Matrix, which assists incategorising jobs based on their significance and urgency. Making a timetable is also an
important aspect of time management.
By organising your day or week ahead of time, you can guarantee that you have enough time to complete each
assignment and prevent last-minute scrambling. Furthermore, time management includes the capacity to say ―No‖ to activities that
are not important or for which you do not have time. Distractions and procrastination must also be avoided.
Finally, time management is an important skill since it helps us to achieve more in less time, decreases stress, and increases
overall productivity. You can take control of your time and achieve your goals by defining clear goals, prioritising work, and
making a timetable.

(B) PLOT (B1) Ans: In the Greenslade School November 15th was very important day it was called the half-yearly report
presentation day Report presentation was of the students, by the students and for the students. In the report of every class, the
focus was on what the students learnt. It was a kind of self-assessment. After the presentation of reports, there was the question-
answer session. Students wereallowed to tell their problems regarding the subjects taught, timetable, general functioning of school etc.
(B2) Ans: An important feature of the half-yearly report was the panel discussion scheduled for the end of the programme. Miss
Philips, Mrs. Dale-Evans and Mr.Weston were chosen at random to form the panel and were asked questions about the reports by
the students of the school. The questions were mostly from the senior students and the teachers had not been made aware of the
questions beforehand.
(B3) 1)Mr. Florian’s address :-Mr. Florian is the headmaster of Greenslade School. He is in no way remote from his school. He
identifies himself with the school and everyone in it. He expresses his pride in all students He appreciates their efforts. He calls
upon them to contribute to the progress of the school. He points out to the students that improvement is needed in conduct,
cleanliness & learning. He is clear about the aims and the policy of the school. His address at the function is lengthy but appreciable.
2)Selection of panel and presentation of report :-The half-yearly report programme was an important event for the Students‘
Council. In this report, the students would present what they had studied, to the teachers and other students. The main purpose of
the event was to analyse and discuss the academic progress of the students. Through their presentations, the students would
outline what they had learnt in their classes and the teachers would thus obtain a clear picture of the depth of their understanding.
The report was thus crucial in deciding the structure of the remaining academic year. Another significant aspect of the report was
the panel discussion. A panel of teachers would be selected by the students, to whom questions about the report would be asked.
3)Representatives and their roles :-Miss Joseph begins the highest class‘s proceeding by explaining that the common theme
underlying al their studies this term is the interdependency of mankind. Potter speaks in the field of math. He explains how the
world has benefitted by the use of common weight and measures. Miss Dare and Fernman spoke on physiology, with Fernman
stealing the show by exhibiting a model of a human skeleton and stressing the class conclusion that ―basically all people were the same.‖
Denham creates a stir by speaking on the required subject of P.T. and games, complaining that the class was ill conceived and pointless.
4)The skeleton scene :- The half-yearly report organized by the students‘ council was a day of great importance for the students
and teachers of Greenslade school. The students were assigned roles and responsibilities and they took their jobs seriously. When
it was time for Fernman to present his report on Physiology, he signalled Welsh and Alison to carry a skeleton to the stage. This
sudden shift of atmosphere from serious, analytical presentations of his classmates, to the image of Fernman on stage next to a
skeleton hanging from a hook screwed into the top of its skull and gently revolving at the end of the cord, immediately made the
audience laugh. Thus he brought comic relief in the students council programme.
5)Denham was outwitted in the end. :-Report Presentation was followed by question-answer session. Three teachers Mr.
Weston, Mrs.Dale-Evans and Miss Philips were chosen to answer the questions. Questions were mostly from the two top classes.
Denham was a trained boxer. He criticized the general pattern of PT and games. Miss Philips dealt with Denham's question
logically and honestly. She asserted that every subject including P.T. and games had been carefully considered for the benefit of
students Greatest good for the greatest number was the view of the school. She stressed that it would be beyond anyone's powers
to please everybody. She outwitted Denham. He accepted his defeat.
( C ) (C1) Describe the following. 1)Greenslade School :- The extract is set in the auditorium of the Greenslade School. The school
itself is situated in East End of London and the story is set in the 1940s. The infamous East End is a key aspect reflecting the theme of
the novel. When Braithwaite meets the students of Greenslade school, he is shocked by their disrespectful and impolite behaviour. The
East End of London has historically been known for overcrowding, crime and poverty, making it an unsuitable environment for growing
children. In this way the Greenslade School in the East End of London is significant to the novel‘s themes of racism, prejudice and
student- teacher relationship.
2)Auditorium and Stage :- During the half-yearly report, as the students take the stage, it become very clear that they have made
considerable progress not only as students but also as individuals. Even if Braithwaite had been aware of how his students had changed,
the setting of the auditorium and the stage, with him as an audience member allows him to observe from afar, the rewards of his efforts.
The stage is one of the aspects of the setting that is symbolic to the student‘s progress and their lives. By presenting their reports, the
students are not just taking active participation in their school, but also coming forward to take control of their lives. The stage represent
the perfect platform for the students to showcase their skills, and thus can also be compared to the stage of the drama, with the student
being given the chance to charm the audience.
3)Life in post-war world :-Another facet of the story which greatly affects its narrative lies is the heavy history of colonialism, its dark
consequence, mental and physical trauma that increase Braithwaite‘s hearted and wrath for British. He constantly feels the prejudicial
effects of colonialism while living in England after World War II, and these negative experiences frequently shape his thought and
action. Braithwaite is surprised and shocked by the condition in which these students lives, and also the physical trauma of the war that
can be seen throughout his teaching environment.
4)Reformation in England:- The racism prevalent in Great Britain during the mid-1940s, the time period during which 'To Sir, with
Love' takes place, is of primary significance in the novel. The narrator cites repeated incidents in which he experiences the racism of
white Britons, including encounters on the bus, at job interviews, at Greenslade school, when searching for housing, at a restaurant with
his girlfriend and so on.At the outset, Braithwaite is struck by the unexpectedness of such prejudice. He was brought up in British Guiana
and he viewed himself as a British citizen, not as a black British citizen in a British colony. When he served Great Britain in the Royal
Air Force, that gave him respect and esteem in the society. The day he left the job, he finds himself to be an outsider.
( C 2) Explain. 1)Atmosphere in the half-yearly programme of students’ council:-
Ans: The half-yearly report programme was an important event for the students‘ council. In this report, the students would
present what they had studied, to the teachers and other students. The main purpose of the event was to analyze and discuss the
academic progress of the students. Through their presentations, the students would outline what they had learnt in their classes and
the teacher would thus obtain a clear picture of the depth of their understanding. The report was thus crucial in deciding the
structure of the remaining academic year. Another significant aspect of the report was the panel discussion. A panel of teachers
would be selected by the students, to whom questions about the reports would be asked. Not only did the students have complete
freedom in choosing the names and number of the teachers on the panel, but the teachers would not be told about their selection
beforehand.
2)Setting of the extract :-The extract is set in the auditorium of Greenslade School. The school itself is situated in the East End
of London and the story is set in the 1940s. The infamous East End is a key aspect reflecting the theme of the novel.
3)Time Period Ans: While reading the novel we have to understand that the time period in which the story takes place is very
important. Braithwaite finds that even though he considers himself British and has served in the Royal Air Force (RAF), the
English do not consider him to be one of them. This leads Braithwaite to feel bitter about the English and colonialism, as well as
about his white students.
(D) THEME (D1) 1)The theme of the extract :- The primary theme of the novel is the student-teacher relationship. When
Braithwaite first accepts his job as a teacher at Greenslade school, he is met with a bunch of arrogant, disrespectful and ill-
mannered students who were well-know for their bad behavior. Thought angry and frustrated at first, Braithwaite eventually learns
to be patient and tolerant towards their antics and develops a strong bond with each of them. Braithwaite is not only concerned
with their academic progress but also takes keen interest in their development as individuals. He even takes the time to find out
more about their backgrounds and tries to understand the reasons for their behavior.
2)The student-teacher relationship theme :- In the extract, the narrator describes the day on which the half-yearly report of the
Students' Council takes place. It is entirely the students' affair; the students are given full freedom. Denham and Miss Joseph
conduct the whole programme and preside over it. The students and teachers all listen attentively to the reports made by the
student representatives on what they have been studying till then. At the end of the students' presentation, three teachers are
chosen at random to answer the students' questions. They have to answer whatever questions are put to them by the students.
Fernman questions them adroitly; Denham is blunt, critical and argumentative. Two of the teachers are flustered by the questions,
which they find difficult to answer. However, Miss Phillips intervenes skillfully when the other two teachers are at a loss without
embarrassing them. She speaks coolly, honestly and with authority. Denham counter-questions her; she is cool and pleasant. The
programme is serious, formal and frank. It is a democratic set up. There is freedom of expression, fearlessness on the part of
students, honesty and analysis of issues.
3)A remarkable progress, change and improvement in the students. :-Braithwaite is the class teacher of the senior most class
of Greenslade School. His description of the presentation of report by his students shows that he is highly pleased with their
performance He has appreciated the manner in which Miss Joseph and Denham initiated the presentation of the reports. "I felt
terribly pleased and proud to see the confident courtesy with which Denham used the term Miss in addressing each of the senior
girls." His remarks are: ‗with commendable gravity, had a trump card up his sleeve', 'Fernman was wonderful'. These remarks
make us believe that Braithwaite is immensely satisfied with the progress of the students of his class.
(D2) 1) Ans:- The half-yearly report of the Students‘ Council was on November 15 th, and was one of the important days in the
calendar of Greenslade School. It was entirely student‘s day, arranged, presented and controlled by them. Braithwaite observed the
activities of his class as they prepared for it, nothing with pride the business-like way in which tasks were allocated and fitted into
a neat programme. On that day there was no assembly. The children arrived smartly dressed and polished, and Miss Joseph and
Denham, who seemed to be the important officials for the occasion.
2)Ans:- Mr. Florian stood and addressed the school. He spoke at length, reiterating the aims and policy of the school and of the
important contribution, each child could make to the furtherance of those aims. He gave praise wherever it was indicated, but
insisted that there was a great deal to be done, by themselves, toward a general improvement in conduct, cleanliness and the
pursuit of knowledge. Mr. Florian was no way remote from his school; his remarks all showed that he identified himself with it
and everyone in it.
3) Ans:- The statement ―I began to understand how it was that a so slight a creature could cope so effectively with her class‖
refers to the narrator‘s realization of Miss Philips ability to handle the students. Miss Philips engages in a verbal exchange with
Denham, who challenges the importance of P.T. and games in the school curriculum. Despite Denham‘s objectives, Miss Phillips
responds confidently and skilfully, countering his arguments with her own reasoning. This interaction demonstrates her
intelligence, wit and ability to outwit Denham, leaving him somewhat defeated.
( E ) LANGUAGE (E1) 1)Denham :- Denham's language is characterized by a direct and assertive tone. He expresses his
opinions and criticisms openly without hesitation. For example, when Denham presents his report on P.T. and games, he severely
criticizes the current pattern and routine, stating, "He complained that the P.T. was ill-conceived and pointless, and the routine
monotonous; he could see no advantage in doing it; a jolly good game was far better." This quote showcases Denham's
straightforward and no-nonsense approach to expressing his viewpoint.
2)Miss Phillips :-Miss Phillips' language is described as seemingly "frilly" and innocent-looking, but she surprises others with her
calm and authoritative responses. She demonstrates a clever and diplomatic manner of handling questions and conflicts. When
defending the inclusion of P.T. and games in the curriculum, Miss Phillips responds to Denham's criticism by stating, "The whole
timetable in this school is meant to help you in the world after you leave here, and doing what you are told in spite of not liking it,
is part of the training." This quote highlights her ability to eloquently argue her point while maintaining a composed demeanour.
3)Mr. Florian:- Mr. Florian's language is characterized by a sense of belonging and connection to the school and its students.
When addressing the school, he reiterates the aims and policies of the school, emphasizing the importance of each child's
contribution. His language conveys a genuine identification with the school and everyone within it. For instance, he states, "He
spoke at length, reiterating the aims and policy of the school and of the important contribution each child could make to the
furtherance of those aims." This quote showcases Mr. Florian's commitment to the school community and his belief in the
potential of every student.
4)Miss Dare :- Miss Dare's language reflects a serious and informative tone. As she reports on the problems related to sickness
and disease, she focuses on the advantages gained through the exchange of knowledge and assistance. Her language highlights the
significance of understanding these issues. For example, she discusses the problems faced by humanity and states, "and of the
advantages gained by interchange of knowledge, advice and assistance." This quote demonstrates Miss Dare's informative
approach to presenting the topic and the importance she places on the exchange of knowledge for the betterment of society.
(E2) 1) Ans:- The statement reflects a tone of admiration and satisfaction. The narrator feels "terribly pleased and proud" to
witness Denham's courteous behavior towards the senior girls, addressing them as "Miss." The style is descriptive, emphasizing
the confidence and courtesy exhibited by Denham. The significance lies in highlighting Denham's respect towards his female
peers, which serves as a positive example for younger students. The overall impact is one of approval and appreciation for
Denham's actions, reinforcing the importance of respectful conduct.
2) Ans:- The statement conveys a tone of admiration and captivation. The narrator describes Fernman as "wonderful" and states
that he had the audience completely engaged and enthralled, as they were figuratively "eating out of his hand." The style is
expressive, emphasizing the impact and effectiveness of Fernman's speaking abilities. The significance lies in recognizing
Fernman's skill in delivering a persuasive and captivating performance, which likely left a lasting impression on the audience. The
overall impact is one of awe and appreciation for Fernman's abilities as a speaker.
3) Ans:- The statement reflects a tone of frustration and dissatisfaction. The speaker expresses discontent with the current
activities of physical training (P.T.) and questions its usefulness, suggesting that engaging in a game of football would be more
beneficial. The style is informal and colloquial, using phrases like "draft things" and "no good to us" to convey a sense of
disapproval. The significance lies in highlighting the speaker's discontent with the existing P.T. routine and his desire for a more
enjoyable and relevant physical activity. The overall impact is one of dissent and a call for change in the P.T. program.

he loses bet. He feels proud when he wins it. He is grateful by nature. So he rewards Passepartout and Mr. Fix. He sincerely loves
Auoda and marries her.
2)Auoda :- Auoda has had very difficult time in India. She was nearly killed by her persecutors, but Fogg managed to save her
and bring her to England with him. She is a wonderful person and so grateful for what Fogg did. She was even apologetic for
having delayed Fogg‘s return. She did not think about the danger she was in from her persecutors! She is very loving. She is not at
all money-minded and was ready to marry Fogg even though he did not have a penny.
3)Passepartout :- Mr. Passepartout is the latest servant of Mr. Fogg. He is very instrumental in Fogg‘s world tour. He is humble,
prompt and honest. He is ready to take any risk. He is crazy. He is very loyal to Mr. Fogg. Once he makes mistake when he is
drunk. He feels guilty and repents. He is the happiest man when Mr. Fogg wins the bet. He runs like a mad man through the
streets. He is a simpleton.
4)Detective Fix Ans: The antagonist of the novel. Detective Fix is an inspector from the Scotland Yard who suspects Phileas Fogg
of robbing the Bank of England. Fix believes that Fogg‘s wager of traveling around the world in eighty days is a cover up for his
escape from London, and decides to follow him and his servant, Passepartout on their adventure.
(A2) 1)Phileas Fogg and Passepartout :- Passepartout‘s personality is completely opposite to Fogg‘s. While Fogg is serious and
meticulous, Passepartout is comical and clumsy. Fogg is worldly, rational, and capable of making informed decisions after
carefully studying any situation, while Passepartout is naïve, gullible and tends to get carried away on occasion. This is evident
when he is easily manipulated by Fix into hiding Fix‘s true motives which results in the arrest of Fogg at Liverpool.
2)Fogg and Auoda :- Auoda seems to be the perfect companion for a man such as Fogg. She is shown as beautiful, polished in
manners and kind at heart. Moreover, she is just as self-respecting as Fogg himself is and is also equally brave. She is
overwhelmed with grief at Mr. Fogg‘s seeming failure of his wager. Mr. Fogg on the other hand, feels guilty and blames himself
for bringing misfortune to Auoda.
3)Fogg and Fix :- Fogg is hero and chief protagonist in the novel. While Fix is the closest to being termed the antagonist in this
story of challenge to travel around the world in eighty days. Fogg is introduced to us as a prudent Englishman whose wealth is a
source of mystery to all. His rationality, calmness, generosity and self-control impress the readers. While Detective Fix is one of
many other detectives who seek to find the culprit so they can get a percentage of the stolen money as a reward.
4)Passepartout and Fix Ans: Passepartout is a Parisian man of about thirty years old and has a pleasant, laid-back demeanour.
After living an adventurous life as a vagrant, singer, circus performer and firefighter he is eager to settle down and lead a quit life
as Fogg‘s domestic help. While Fix is diligent and determined in the novel. He spend all of his time and energy following Fogg,
determined to arrest him.
(A3) Ans:- From Aoudad‘s point of view, the statement implies that she is questioning whether their marriage is still satisfactory
to Mr. Fogg given the change in his financial situation. Aouda acknowledges that Mr. Fogg was previously financially ruined, but
now he has regained his wealth. By mentioning this, she suggests that his newfound riches might have altered his perspective or
feelings towards their marriage. Aouda is seeking reassurance that their relationship remains strong and that Mr. Fogg's restored
wealth has not affected their bond or his commitment to her.
(A4) Ans: -From Aouda's point of view, the statement highlights the unique character of Passepartout based on his appearance
and actions. The mention of Passepartout's hair being in disorder and him running without his hat suggests a sense of urgency,
spontaneity, and perhaps a lack of concern for his appearance.Passepartout's disheveled hair and the absence of his hat indicate
that he might not conform to societal norms or conventions. He seems to prioritize speed and action over personal grooming or
maintaining a polished appearance. This implies that he is a free-spirited and adventurous individual who is willing to sacrifice
superficial considerations in pursuit of his goals. The fact that Passepartout is running also suggests his energetic nature and
willingness to take action. It portrays him as someone who is agile, proactive, and driven to complete tasks quickly. This further
reinforces his distinct personality traits and sets him apart as a character who is not afraid to take risks or go against the
grain.Overall, Aouda, as an observer, would perceive Passepartout as a unique and unconventional character based on his
disheveled appearance and his energetic and purposeful actions.
(A5) Ans:- From Phileas Fogg‘s point of view, the statement highlights the regret of Fogg for bringing Auoda with him to
London. Before his journey around the world, Fogg lived a solitary life. He closed himself off to others and cared little about the
way he was perceived by other people.By the end of the trip, though he recognizes the importance of human connections, both in
form of love with Auoda and friendship and loyalty with Passepartout. But at one moment he came to know that he has lost
everything. Now he is unable to fulfil the needs of Auoda, so he said Auoda that ―will you pardon me for bringing you to
England?‖
(B) (B1) 1)Imprisonment of Phileas Fogg :- Phileas Fogg is imprisoned in the Custom House and is set to be transferred to
London. Passepartout is held back as he tries to defend Fogg, and Aouda is shocked and saddened by the events. Fogg is calm and
waits, uncertain of his fate.
2)Release of Phileas Fogg from jail :- Phileas Fogg is released from jail after evidence proves his innocence. With the help of
Detective Fix, who realizes his mistake, Fogg is freed. His release brings relief and allows him to resume his journey, continuing
his race against time to reach the Reform Club and win his wager.

he actually won the wager, providing a moment of relief and elation.
5)Fogg wins the wager in the end :- In a dramatic turn of events, Phileas Fogg emerges triumphant in the end, winning the high-
stakes wager. Despite numerous challenges and setbacks during his journey, Fogg's unwavering determination and resourcefulness
pay off, proving his ability to traverse the world within the designated time frame. Celebration and victory fill the air.
( C ) (C1) 1)Custom House :- The setting of the extract is the Custom House. Phileas Fogg has been shut up in the custom
house and is waiting to be transferred to London the next day. Passepartout and Auoda are also present at the custom house, under
the portico, anxiously waiting for Mr. Fogg. The scene takes place in the prison like environment of the custom house, with
wooden benches and a locked door, creating a sense of confident and tension.
2)Reform Club :- Reform Club is the place, which Fogg frequented on a regular basis. It is at the Reform Club that Fogg gets
involved in an argument over an article, and where the wager with his fellow club members takes place. It is the place where Fogg
was supposed to return before 8:45 p.m. on 21 December, 80 days later.
3)Mr. Fogg’s life in the prison :- Confined within the prison walls, Mr. Fogg's life takes on a stark contrast. The prison, a somber
and desolate place, echoes with the weight of confinement and despair. The cramped cells and iron bars serve as constant
reminders of his restricted existence. Time passes slowly as Fogg endures a monotonous routine, his days blending together in a
bleak haze. The prison's grim atmosphere offers little solace, amplifying the isolation and uncertainty that shroud his thoughts.
Inside those cold walls, Fogg's spirit remains resolute, awaiting the opportunity to reclaim his freedom and resume his
extraordinary journey.
4)Mr. Fogg’s journey to London :- Phileas Fogg's journey to London was fraught with challenges and obstacles. From being
imprisoned in the Custom House to facing the sudden arrest by Fix, his path was riddled with uncertainty. The setting shifted from
the confines of the prison to the bustling streets of London. Fogg's determination remained unwavering as he navigated through
locked doors and barred windows. The clock became a prominent symbol, marking the time ticking away. Ultimately, the setting
transitioned to Fogg's residence in Saville Row, where he contemplated his misfortune and planned his next move.
(D) (D1) 1) Ans:- The theme explored in the extract is the concept of time and its relationship to travel. Fogg's ability to gain a
day in his journey by traveling constantly eastward highlights the idea of time as a construct that can be manipulated through
movement. This theme emphasizes Fogg's meticulous planning and determination to complete his journey within the specified
timeframe. It also raises questions about the subjective nature of time and how it can be perceived and experienced differently
depending on one's actions and perspective.
2)Ans:- On Saturday evening, a large gathering of people congregated in Pall Mall and the surrounding streets, creating a bustling
scene reminiscent of a crowd of brokers stationed near the Reform Club. Phileas Fogg, like a racehorse, was drawing near his last
turning point. Circulation was impeded, and financial transactions were going on. The police had great difficulty in keeping back
the crowd, and as the hour when Phileas Fogg was due approached, the excitement rose to its highest pitch.
3) Ans:- This scene is significant because it highlights the tension and anticipation surrounding Phileas Fogg's wager. The
characters, possibly including Phileas Fogg himself, are aware of the time constraint imposed by the bet. They know that Fogg
must reach the Reform Club by a certain time to win the wager. As a result, their concentration on the game is compromised, and
they keep looking at the clock to see how much time is left. The phrase "the players took up their cards but could not keep their
eyes off the clock" emphasizes the internal struggle they are facing. They want to focus on the game, but their eagerness to know
whether Fogg will make it in time is overpowering. It creates a sense of suspense and anticipation, as each passing moment brings
them closer to the deadline.
(D2) Ans:- The theme of time plays a crucial role in the extract from the novel. The first instance portrays a crowded gathering in Pall Mall,
likening the multitude of people to brokers permanently stationed around the Reform Club. This suggests a sense of constant activity and the
passage of time. The second instance focuses on the players who, despite engaging in a card game, are unable to divert their attention from the
clock. This highlights the pervasive presence of time, suggesting its influence over human actions and decisions. Overall, the theme of time
underscores the urgency and significance of timekeeping in the extract.
( E ) (E1) 1) Ans:-This quote suggests that two important qualities, patience and time, are the most effective tools in overcoming challenges
or achieving success. In this context, "warriors" metaphorically refers to the qualities or attributes that enable individuals to face and conquer
difficulties.Patience is the ability to remain calm and persistent in the face of obstacles, setbacks, or delays. It involves maintaining composure,
not rushing into actions or decisions, and understanding that some goals require time and effort to be achieved. Patience allows individuals to
endure hardships, navigate through complex situations, and stay focused on their objectives. Time is emphasized as a powerful warrior because
it has the capacity to influence outcomes and bring about change. Often, success or progress requires the passage of time, whether it is for skills
to develop, opportunities to arise, or circumstances to evolve. Time allows for growth, learning, and the accumulation of experiences, which can
ultimately lead to victory.Together, patience and time form a formidable combination. Patience enables individuals to persevere through
difficulties, while time provides the necessary space for progress and transformation. By harnessing these qualities, one can overcome challenges
and achieve their desired goals.
2) Ans:- This quote challenges the common misconception that courage means being fearless. Instead, it suggests that courage lies in facing and
overcoming fear, rather than the absence of fear itself.Courage is the ability to act bravely in the face of danger, difficulty, or fear. It involves
acknowledging one's fears or apprehensions and still choosing to take action despite them. This quote emphasizes that true courage is displayed
when individuals confront their fears head-on and are able to triumph over them. The quote implies that courage is a result of overcoming fear,
rather than the lack of fear altogether. It recognizes that fear is a natural human emotion and that true courage comes from pushing through fear
and not allowing it to hinder progress or dictate actions.By reframing courage in this way, the quote encourages individuals to embrace their
fears as opportunities for growth and personal development. It suggests that facing and conquering fear leads to a greater sense of
accomplishment and empowerment.
