Context : It is a letter, written by Lincoln to his son’s teacher regarding the kind of education.
Explanation: Lincoln sends his son to school for the first time. It is all strange and new to him. So treat him
Gently. He should believe in himself and asks the teacher to teach his son to have faith in his
Own ideas.
V Short stories
1. Engine Trouble : RK.Narayan
The present short story ‘ Engine Trouble’ was written by RK.Narayan. It was taken from his collection
“ Malgudi days” . He won Sahitya Academy Award. The narrator wins a Road engine in a lottery. But he
couldn’t find a way to move. The municipal authorities gave a notice to shift the road engine.With great
difficulty, the narrator was able to find a driver, and temple priest agreed to send the elephant to pull the
engine.
He setup fifty labours to push. While elephant is pulling the engine, joseph controls it and
coolies push it from behind. In this confusion, it went straight into the opposite compound wall
and broke it. Later, he was sent to jail. Mean while, there was swamiji, he wanted Road engine
to do his feats. But, police men stopped swamiji. The Road engine was again a burden property.
Luckily, Nature came to rescue him as earth .The engine was thrown on the mouth of
a unused well and the problem of narrator was solved.
