SB16A
4.16.1 Foreword to preparing the base ballast blocks

DANGER

y
Risk of serious accident and damage to the equipment

nl
The use of non-conforming ballast blocks could lead to serious accidents.
▶ Where the ballast blocks (counter-jib, chassis (GMA and GME) and cross-

O
shaped base) are supplied by the customer, they must be made under the
sole responsibility of the customer, in compliance with the characteristics as
to weight and dimensions communicated by the manufacturer in the instruc-
tion manual.

ge
Manitowoc will not be held responsible in any way and accepts no liability in
the event of any damage, loss, legal claim or expenses of any nature whatso-
ever resulting directly or indirectly from these ballast blocks.
sa
▶ These ballast blocks are not covered by the Manitowoc guarantee.

The ballast blocks must be prepared according to the instructions given below. The ex-

terior dimensions of the blocks and especially the position of the openings allowing pas-
sage of the ballast fixing devices (when needed) must be observed.

Risk that the ballast blocks could become unbalanced, causing them to fall.

▶ While preparing the concrete blocks, check that the top and bottom faces are
perfectly parallel.

Note
The block reinforcement, in addition to what is shown, is up to the initiative of the
user, who is in charge of preparing this block without any supplies from crane man-
ufacturer.

The value of the base ballast to be placed depending on the crane configuration is pro-
vided in the chapter "Mast composition, base ballast and reactions".

4.17.1 Principle of balancing for telescoping

nl

DANGER
O

Risk of falling crane

Any telescoping operation carried out before the crane has been properly balanced
could lead to an extremely serious accident.
▶ The balancing parameters (load and radius) are unique to each crane config-
uration.
▶ It is essential for the operator to work out the theoretical balancing values for
the actual crane configuration in question.
▶ The theoretical values are given as a guide, and may need to be adjusted
during the thrust phase (because of dispersal over the masses of the com-
ponents, the various pieces of equipment which may or may not be included
in the crane configuration, the length of rope wound onto the winch, etc.) to
ensure that the four areas of supports between the part being telescoped and
the fixed part lift off at the same time.
ENU / 2022-10-12

The operation of telescoping requires the crane to be perfectly balanced relative to the
axis of the telescoping cylinder in order for the slewing crane part to be raised.
To balance the crane, the "forward" and "backward" moments must be equal.
The "backward" moment is due to:
