Types of fluid flow

Steady and unsteady flows

Uniform and non uniform flows

Laminar and Turbulent flows

Compressible incompressible flows

Rotational and irrotational flows

One, two and three – dimensional flows
Steady and unsteady flows
Steady flows
➢ A steady flow is one in which all conditions at any point in a
stream remain constant with respect to time.

➢ A steady flow is the one in which the quantity of liquid flowing

per second through any section, is constant.

➢ In this fluid flow velocity, pressure, density etc. does not changes
at a point with time.
Steady and unsteady flows
Unsteady flows
➢ Unsteady flow is one in which all conditions at any point in a
stream does not remain constant with respect to time.

➢ Unsteady flow is the one in which the quantity of liquid flowing per
second through any section, is not constant.

➢ In this fluid flow velocity, pressure, density etc. changes at a point

with time.
Uniform and non uniform flows
Uniform flows
➢ Uniform flow is defined as that type of flow in which the
velocity at any given time does not change with respect to space
(length of direction of flow)
Uniform and non uniform flows
Non uniform flows
➢ Non uniform flow is defined as that type of flow in which the
velocity at any given time change with respect to space (length
of direction of flow)
Laminar and Turbulent flows
Laminar flows
➢ It is defined as the flow in which the fluid particles move along
well defined path or stream line & all the streamlines are straight
and parallel.

Turbulent flows
Turbulent flows
➢ In this flow the fluid particles move in random motion
or zig-zag way.

➢ High losses occurs in this.

Compressible flows
Compressible flows
➢ In this flow density of the fluid changes from point to
point.

➢ In this density in not constant.

Incompressible flows
Incompressible flows
➢ In this flow density of the fluid is constant.
Rotational flows
Rotational flows
➢ In this flow fluid particles rotates about their on axis
while moving along the stream line.
Irrotational flows
Irrotational flows
➢ In this flow fluid particles does not rotates about their
on axis while moving along the stream line.
One, two and three – dimensional flows
One dimensional flow

➢ Term one, two or three dimensional flow refers to the

number of space coordinated required to describe a
flow.

❖ In this flow the velocity is a function of time and one rectangular

space co-ordinate only.
One, two and three – dimensional flows
Two dimensional flow
❖ In this flow the velocity is a function of time and two rectangular
space co-ordinates only.
One, two and three – dimensional flows
Three dimensional flow
❖ In this flow the velocity is a function of time and three rectangular space co-ordinates
only.
