THE CURSED INVASION OF THE
BONE MARCH, THE HUMANOIDS
The beginnings of the Cursed Invasion of the Bone
March started with a series of related events. The first
event was the rise of not one but two orcs, Nar, a hill
tribe chieftain, and Gorsh, a mountain tribe shaman.
Raised in the harsh environment of orcish clan life,
both would eventually set their sights on the same
goal: establishing an orcish empire. Their paths were
destined to be intertwined, and the joining of these
two ambitions would spell the doom for the Bone
March.

DRUIDS OF THE BONE MARCH
The Druids of the Bone March
The Bone March has a much longer history than most
realize. The March's highlands were home to dwarves
and gnomes before humans first explored the region
and home to tribes of Flan dating back over 1,800
years ago. Unlike the Flan further to the south that
established the kingdom of Ahlissa, the Flan that
settled in what would become the Bone March
preferred to pursue a semi-nomadic lifestyle intricately
connected to the land.
While venerating gods such as Beory and Obad-hai,
these druids believed in the Old Religion, or the
Green Way. In the Green Way religion, Beory and
Obad-hai are as much a part of the cycle of life as
are mortals. These druids that came to the Bone
March formed a circle, the Circle of the March. They
took it upon themselves to watch over the land and its
peoples.
Within this culture, the druids acted as spiritual
leaders and historians of their tribes. They used the
potent ley lines that crossed the land, particularly a
junction of two lines at a Green Mouth location, to
weave potent druidic magics to aid their Flan brothers
and sisters. The Green Mouth was a depression within
the center of the highlands that was extraordinarily
lush and overgrown. How is this possible? Why is this
the case in a moorland? This remains unknown, but it defensible settlements. At this time, we see the

attention to the druids, whom they regarded as little
more than relics of a bygone age. But the people in
the smaller villages, especially the more remote ones,
still had strong ties to the druids, and they began
warning and preparing them to move when the orcs
invaded.
In 561 CY, the largescale raiding turned into an all-
out invasion as not just one but two hordes of orcs
and their allies invaded the March. The druids, who
had already been preparing, quickly gathered up
those villagers that they had warned and took them to
secret locations in hopes of riding out the invasion.
After taking those they could to safety, the druids met
and decided to go to Spinecastle to aid the Marquis.
They were shocked to find the city had already been
sacked, and the castle was under siege. A few druids
made their way into the fortress at Spinecastle, where
they stayed to help defend it and the Marquis. The rest
hurried to help the army in the field. Those druids that
stayed with Marquis Clement would die there when
the fortress fell.
The druids fought with Sir Stermorn and helped him
elude his pursuers when the remnants of his army
escaped into Ratik. With no apparent army left to help
the people of the March, the druids hurried to help in
any way that they could. Stermorn wanted them to
stay and help with reorganizing those who had
escaped, but the druids declined. This was seen as a
betrayal by Stermorn and his men. To this day, the
remnants of the Knight Protectors and soldiers that
survived and eventually settled in Ratik curse the Circle
of the March.
In the end, the Druids saved thousands of civilians
from slaughter and eventually turned those refugees
into the nomad tribes that still wander the March. The
Cursed Invasion also spelled the end of the Circle of
the March. The rest of the Circle focused on taking
care of the refugees and put all their time and effort
into turning them into proper nomadic people.

Knurl's diverse economic activities played a vital role in its post-invasion recovery and integration into the Bone March's political landscape. Different districts focused on economic specialization, such as manufacturing, alchemy, and craft goods, providing employment and trade opportunities. The presence of weaponsmiths and secure storage facilities fostered commerce and attracted merchants, enhancing Knurl’s economic strength. This robust economic base allowed Knurl to resist external pressures and maintain strategic independence within the region’s complex political framework .
Countess Salvie played a crucial role in the survival and transformation of the County of Knurl during the Bone March invasion. She capitalized on the influx of refugees, many of whom were men-at-arms, to bolster her county's defense. Her leadership helped Knurl avoid a fate similar to other regions under siege. Unlike other regions, Knurl's history of cooperation with orc hill tribes led Breka to ally rather than conquer them, allowing Knurl to maintain autonomy and stability .
Degtra's actions severely impacted orcish alliances by creating tension and weakening their cohesion. Her decision to attack Johnsport and engage Gorsh diverted attention and resources from Breka's main objectives, forcing him to address internal conflicts instead of focusing outward. This internal skirmishing undermined the unified orc front, allowed competing factions to vie for power, and stirred mistrust between Breka and his orcish allies, which ultimately destabilized the broader orcish alliance .
The Circle of the March druids played a vital role in the survival of refugees during and after the invasion. They reverted the refugees to a nomadic lifestyle, thereby adapting them to evade orc forces more effectively. By keeping the refugees on the move, the druids reduced the risk of concentrated attacks by humanoid forces. This mobility allowed them to avoid direct confrontation with stronger orc armies and made it possible to take advantage of the internal discord among orc tribes, further ensuring survival .
The political arrangements between Breka and Herzog Grenell influenced the power dynamics in the Bone March significantly. By aligning with Grenell, Breka ensured that the orc hill tribes within his horde could not remain idle, sending them to aid Herzog's plans for independence. This alliance also allowed Breka to focus on strengthening his own forces by recruiting bandits and warriors from various regions, including Knurl, the Great Kingdom, and even the north. This strategic relationship reduced the threat Grenell posed to Breka and allowed him to transform his horde into a more structured army, thereby consolidating his control over the region .
Knurl's social and political structure was critical in maintaining stability post-invasion. The division into informal districts with varied economic activities ensured diversified local economies, aiding recovery. The city council, comprising nobles and merchants, although seen as hereditary, provided continuity in governance. The rebuilding efforts, like reopening Warden’s Hall under Count Dunstan, restored social order and local pride. Despite challenges, such as the presence of mercenaries, Knurl's adaptability and pre-existing ties to orc tribes helped maintain a degree of autonomy and facilitate post-invasion recovery .
Introducing traditional clan systems and druidic leadership significantly affected the cultural and social dynamics in the Bone March post-invasion. These systems, rooted in ancestral practices, provided a framework for cultural continuity and identity amid adversity. Druidic leadership facilitated a cohesive response to threats, aligning survival strategies with ecological knowledge. This cultural reinforcement built community resilience, supported by shared values and sustainable practices, allowing human and nomadic populations to withstand external pressures, fostering a distinct societal structure within the Bone March .
The reorganization of power structures drastically impacted the local population and refugees post-invasion. Human-based groups in Knurl avoided subjugation due to alliances with orc factions, allowing them to maintain hybrid socio-political systems. The druid-led refugee groups, meanwhile, faced a shift to nomadic lifestyles, with social norms realigned around survival and mobility. This fragmentation into distinct power groups and nomadic existence disrupted traditional lifestyles but provided resilience against orc dominance, which was essential for survival .
Half-orcs played a significant role in the order and development of Knurl post-invasion. Knurl's policy of treating half-orcs as regular citizens allowed them to integrate into society and contribute meaningfully. Their presence in nomadic tribes and as dependable tradespeople and guards helped maintain order and security, which was crucial for social stability. This integration supported Knurl's defense and economic recovery, fostering a unique societal structure that distinguished them from other regions in the Flanaess .
Breka and Gorsh employed differing strategies that significantly affected their positions in the Bone March. Breka focused on transforming his force into a disciplined army by recruiting external warriors, maintaining strategic alliances, and fostering a sense of progression among his ranks. In contrast, Gorsh relied on fostering orcish purity and loyalty through magical experimentation and shamanistic influence, which restricted his flexibility and alienated potential half-orc allies. Consequently, Breka strengthened his hold and expanded influence, while Gorsh remained constrained, unable to challenge Breka's growing dominance effectively .
