1. Note orientation of spacer (29) from disassembly. Taper side of spacer (29) goes toward
bearing cone (28.). Install spacer (29).
2. Raise temperature of bearing (28). Install bearing (28) onto wheel spindle (27).
Illustration 2 g06391064
3. Use Tooling (C) to install duo-cone seal (26) onto the wheel spindle (27). Install duo-cone
seal (26). Refer to Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install for the correct procedure.
Illustration 3 g06389527
4. Install O-ring seals (25) onto the indicator and cover (21). Lightly coat O-ring seals (25) with
the oil being sealed.
5. Install nut (22A) and O-ring seal (25) onto compensator (22). Lightly coat O-ring seals (25)
with the oil being sealed.
Illustration 4 g06389974
Illustration 5 g06389985
6. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (20). Install bearing cup (20).
7. Use Tooling (C) to install half of duo-cone seal (19). Install duo-cone seal (19). Refer to Duo-
Cone Conventional Seals - Install for the correct procedure.
8. Install bleeder (23).
9. Install elbow adapter (24).
Illustration 6 g06389977
10. Lightly coat indicator with lubricant being sealed. Install the indicator and cover (21).
11. Lightly coat compensator (22) with lubricant being sealed. Install compensator (22). Tighten
compensator (22) two full turns, but do not fully tighten.
Illustration 7 g06391058
12. Install Tooling (A) and attach a suitable lifting device to housing (18). The weight of housing
(18) is approximately 50 kg (110 lb). Invert housing assembly (18) and install onto wheel
spindle (27).
Illustration 8 g06389504
13. Install D-ring seals (17) and lightly coat with the lubricant being sealed.
Illustration 9 g06389500
14. Install piston assembly (16).
15. Install hub (15).
Illustration 10 g06391053
16. Tighten compensator (22) until contact is made with the piston, in the retracted position.
Once contact has been established, loosen compensator (22) 1/2 turn. Hold compensator
(22), and tighten nut (22A) to a torque of 50 ± 10 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft).
Note: If installing used or partially worn friction discs, refer to Test and Adjust, "Brake Disc
Wear - Check" for the correct procedure.

Illustration 12 g06366922
17. Install O-ring (14).
18. Install springs (11).
19. Lightly coat discs (13), and plates (12) with clean lubricant. Install discs (13), and plates (12)
in the quantity, order, and orientation noted during disassembly. Install discs (13) such that
the ventilation holes are aligned.
Illustration 13 g06368406
20. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (9). Install bearing cup (9) onto cover (7).
Illustration 14 g06389928
Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause
bodily injury.
To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly
procedure and wear protective equipment.
21. Install four bolts (6) and tighten evenly in 1/2 turn increments to install cover (7).
Illustration 15 g06391041
22. Install bearing cone (8).
Illustration 16 g06391047
23. Install sprocket (5).
24. Position retainer (2) on sprocket (5) with no shims installed. Install bolts (1) finger tight
against retainer (2). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 80 N·m (59 lb ft). Repeat until bolts (1)
no longer turn. Rotate the housing three full rotations. Bolts (1) will have to be tightened to a
torque of 80 N·m (59 lb ft) several times. After each tightening sequence, rotate the housing
three full revolutions until the bolt torque has equalized at 80 N·m (59 lb ft).
25. Loosen bolts (1), and finger tighten against retainer (2).
26. With bolts (1) finger tight only, rotate the housing three full rotations.
27. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 20 N·m (177 lb in). Repeat until bolts (1) no longer move.
Rotate the housing three full revolutions. Bolts (1) will have to be tightened to a torque of
20 N·m (177 lb in) several times. After each tightening sequence, rotate the housing three
full revolutions until the bolt torque has equalized at 20 N·m (177 lb in).

Note: Make sure to subtract the thickness of retainer (2) when measuring Dimension (X).
28. Using Tooling (E), measure Dimension (X) in three places and calculate the average of
Dimension (X).
29. Add the Preload Adjustment Factor found in Table 2 to the Dimension calculated in Step 28.
The result will be the total thickness of shim pack (4).
Table 2
Preload Adjustment Factor
Machine Factor
120 0.164 mm (0.00646 inch)
30. Build shim pack (4) to the Dimension calculated in Step 29. Use the most number of thick
shims possible for the given total thickness. Position the thin shims between the thick shims.
31. Install retainer (2). Apply Tooling (D) to the threads of bolts (1). Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts
(1) to a torque of 130 ± 7 N·m (96 ± 5 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install the service brake (wheel spindle). Refer to Service Brake (Wheel Spindle) - Remove
and Install .
