Research Activity:
PROVISION OF SECTION 208 EARTHQUAKE LOADS OF NSCP 2015
Instructions:
I. Search the following provisions from Section 208 of NSCP
2015:
1. 208.1 Purpose
i. The Purpose of the succeeding earthquake
provisions is primarily to design seismic-
resistant structures to safeguard against major
structural damage that may lead to loss of life
and property. These provisions are not intended to
assure zero-damage to structures nor maintain
their functionality after a severe earthquake.
2. 208.1.2 Minimum Seismic Design
i. Structures and portions thereof shall, as a
minimum, be design and constructed to resist the
effects of seismic ground motions as provided in
this section.
3. 208.4.2 Occupancy Categories
i. For purposes of earthquake-resistant design, each
structure shall be placed in one of the occupancy
categories listed in Table 103-1. Table 208-1
assigns importance factors, I and Ip, and
structural observation requirements for each
category.
4. Table 208-1: Seismic Importance Factor
5. 208.4.3 Soil Profile Types
Soil Profile Types S A , S B , SC , S D ∧S E are defined in
Table 208-2 and Soil Profile Type S F is defined as
soils requiring site-specific evaluation as follows:
1. Soils vulnerable to potential failure or collapse
under seismic loading, such as liquefiable soils,
quick and highly sensitive clays, and collapsible
weakly cemented soils.

2. Peats and/or highly organic clays, where the

thickness of peat or highly organic clay exceeds
3.0 m.

3. Very high plasticity clays with a plasticity

index, PI > 75, where the depth of clay exceeds
7.5 m.

4. Very thick soft/medium stiff clays, where the

depth of clay exceeds 35.

5. The criteria set forth in the definition for Soil

Profile Type S F requiring site-specific evaluation
shall be considered. If the site corresponds to
these criteria, the site shall be classified as
Soil Profile Type SF and a site-specific
evaluation shall be conducted.
6. 208.4.4.1 Seismic Zone
The Philippine Archipelago is divided into two
seismic zones only. Zone 2 covers the provinces of
Palawan (except Busuanga), Sulu and Tawi-Tawi
while the rest of the country is under Zone 4 as
shown in Figure 208-1. Each structure shall be
assigned a seismic zone factor Z, in accordance
with Table 208-3.
7. 208.4.4.2 Source Type
Table 208-4 defines the types of seismic sources.
The location and type of seismic sources to be
used for design shall be established based on
approved geological data; see Figure 208-2A. Type
A sources shall be determined from Figure 208-2B,
2C, 2D, 2E or the most recent mapping of active
faults by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology
and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

8. 208.4.4.3 Seismic Source Type

9. Fault Map of the Philippines
10. Active Faults and Trenches in Region 2

11. 208.4.4.3 Seismic Zone 4 Near-Source Factor

i. In Seismic Zone 4, each site shall be assigned
near-source factors in accordance with Tables 208-
5 and 208-6 based on the Seismic Source Type as
set forth in Section 208.4.4.2.
ii. For high rise structures and essential facilities
within 2.0 km of a major fault, a site specific
seismic elastic design response spectrum is
recommended to be obtained for the specific area.
12. 208.4.6 Structural Systems – Concrete
13. 208.4.6 Structural Systems – Steel
II. Create a summary document that:
1. Describes the provisions in brief (2-3 sentences).
2. Explains the purpose and application of each section in
seismic design.
 208.1 (Purpose)
 The purpose of section 208.1 explains to ensure
that the buildings and structures are intended
to resist the seismic forces while protecting
people and property. It aims to ensure that
there is enough straight to withstand mild to
moderate earthquakes while also avoid
catastrophic or significant damage.
 208.1.2 (Minimum Seismic Design)
 Section 208.1.2 focuses on building safety and
defines the standard for seismic design or the
structural performance during an earthquake. In
order to keep the structures usable after an
earthquake, it assures that they are built to
be strong enough to resist the seismic forces
or the design level earthquake.
 208.4.2 (Occupancy Categories)
 Section 208.4.are the buildings being
categorized based on their purpose, an
essential-use building that are included in
Group A, a hazardous building is included in
Group B, and a standard occupancy are included
in Group C. The categories define the seismic
safety criteria with facilities that are
essential to public safety and welfare subject
to higher norms.
 Table 208-1 (Seismic Importance Factor)
 The table 208-1 provides numerical importance
according to the relevance of each structures
linked to the various occupancy groups. It
includes both I and Ip.
 208.4.3 (Soil Profile Types)
 Section 208.4.3. based on properties like
stiffness and shear wave velocity, soil is
divided into several profile kinds. This
categorization guarantees that the distinct
behavior of various soil types during
earthquakes is taken into consideration in
site-specific seismic designs.
 208.4.4.1 (Seismic Zone)
 Section.4.4.1 due to differences in regional
seismic activity, the Philippines is separated
into two separate seismic zones. By defining
the minimum seismic pressures that structures
must endure in each area, these zones serve as
a reference for structural design.
 208.4.4.2 (Source Type)
 Section 208.4.4.2 based on their properties and
maximum moment magnitude; seismic sources are
divided into three kinds. This clause
guarantees that the effect of each source type
on seismic forces is suitably taken into
account in structural designs.
 208.4.4.3 (Seismic Source Type)
 Section.4.4.3. based on their properties and
maximal moment magnitude, seismic sources are
divided into three categories. This
recommendation aids in making sure that the
impact of every source type on seismic forces
is included in structural designs.
 Figure 2-9-2A (Fault Map of the Philippines)
 Based on figure 2-9-2A, engineers can evaluate
regional earthquake hazards with the use of the
Philippine Fault Map, which shows the main
faults in the nation. It acts as a visual aid
for comprehending and assessing how close
structures are to active fault lines.
 Figure 208-2D (Active Faults and Trenches in Region
 Based on figure 208-2D, an accurate picture of
the local seismic hazards based on proximity to
active faults is provided by this image, which
depicts the active faults and trenches in
Region 2. Additionally, it offers important
information for building structures in the area
that are earthquake-resistant.

 208.4.4.3 (Seismic Zone 4 Near-Source Factor)

 Section 208.4.4.3, in order to account for
greater seismic forces, close to major faults
in Seismic Zone 4, this provision takes into
consideration extra elements. Buildings close
to active faults need to be built to withstand
the increased ground motion there.
 Table 208-11A (Structural Systems - Concrete)
 Based on table 208-11A, several permitted
structural systems for concrete structures are
included in this table together with
information on their design constraints and
seismic performance criteria. It guarantees
that the structure satisfies the necessary
seismic design requirements.
 Table 208-11B (Structural Systems - Steel)
 Based on table 208-11B, it shows that the
structural systems for steel structures are in
this table together with their design limits
and seismic performance parameters. It
guarantees that the structure complies with
accepted seismic design guidelines.
