All praise is due to Allah, we praise him, we seek his
help, we seek his forgiveness, and we seek his
guidance. And we seek refuge in Allah from the evil
within ourselves and our evil deeds. Whoever Allah
Guides, none can misguide, Whoever, Allah leads
astray, none can guide. And I bear witness that there
is none worthy of worship except Allah and that محمد
صل هللا عليه وسلمis his servant and messenger.

Brothers and sisters. Today I would like to give
you some advice. Advice that a man thousands of
years ago gave to his son. Advice so beneficial that
Allah has eternally preserved it in the Quran. Advice
that covers almost every aspect of your life. Today,
in sha Allah, we will explore some of the words of
wisdom that Luqman bestowed upon his son which
can be found in the surah named after him.
Allah subhanah says in Surat Luqman:
Indeed, We blessed Luqmân with wisdom, ˹saying˺,
“Be grateful to Allah, for whoever is grateful, it is only
for their own good. And whoever is ungrateful, then
surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
In this ayah in which Luqman is introduced as a man
blessed with wisdom. And in the same Ayah that
Allah reveals that Luqman has been blessed with
wisdom, Allah is advising Luqman to be grateful to
Allah, for whoever is grateful it is only for their own
good. And that Allah subhanahu is self-sufficient and
Praiseworthy. Highlighting that being grateful to Allah
and understanding who that benefits is indeed the
eye of Wisdom.
So our first piece of advice today is the advice that
Allah gives to Luqman thereby giving him wisdom.
Be grateful to Allah. If anything good or bad happens
to us, what do we say? Alhamdullillah, All praise is
due to Allah. How do we start every raka in salah?
How do we start khutbas?
And who does this all benefit? Only ourselves.
Brothers and sisters, understanding this alone will
put your relationship with Allah in perspective.
I did not create jinn and humans except to worship
Me.
I seek no provision from them, nor do I need them to
feed Me.
Indeed, Allah ˹alone˺ is the Supreme Provider—Lord
of all Power, Ever Mighty.
Your worshiping of Allah subhanahu watalaa, your
praising of Allah subhanahu watalaa does not
benefit Allah. Allah does not need you. But our sole
purpose is to worship Allah. And so I want you to
remember this, When you are about to do
something, purify your intention so that it is for the
sake of Allah, because otherwise it is of no benefit to
you. When anything good or bad happens, praise
Allah, because Allah knows what you don’t know.
Allah knows you and what is good for you better
than you know yourself.
Which is why the ayah says, Be grateful to
Allah.
Not only when something good happens, just in
general, regardless of how you perceive what
happened, be grateful for anything and everything
that Allah has given you.
In fact, according to the hadith,
The messenger of Allah said, "How wonderful is the
case of a believer; there is good for him in
everything and this applies only to a believer. If
prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to
Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity
befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is
"better for him
And so I want you to reflect on what you perceive
to be the best thing happening to you right now……
Got it? Now think of what you perceive to be the
worst thing happening to you right now. And know
that both of these things can turn into the best or
worst things depending on how you react to them.
So my advice to you, be amongst those who are
grateful, and be among those who are patient.
Back to surat luqman.
Now that Allah has established Luqman as a man
that possesses wisdom, the first piece of advice that
Luqman the Wise gives to his son as revealed in
Surat Luqman is:
And ˹remember˺ when Luqmân said to his son, while
advising him, “O my dear son! Never associate
˹anything˺ with Allah ˹in worship˺, for associating
˹others with Him˺ is truly the worst of all wrongs.”
This piece of advice is the first because it is the most
important, Because if you abide by every other rule
in Islam and heed every piece of advice in the
Quran, but your worship is not to Allah subhanahu
watalaa alone, it amounts to nothing. On the other
hand, if you heed this piece of advice, even if you
sin, there is at least hope for forgiveness on the day
of judgement. Because Allah says,
Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others
with Him ˹in worship˺, but forgives anything else of
whoever He wills. And whoever associates others
with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin
And in another ayah,
Surely Allah does not forgive associating ˹others˺
with Him ˹in worship˺,1 but forgives anything else of
whoever He wills. Indeed, whoever associates
˹others˺ with Allah has clearly gone far astray.
The next piece of advice in surat Luqman is not from
Luqman, it is advice from Allah subahanh watalaa,

And We have commanded people to ˹honour˺ their
parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship
upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years.
So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the
final return.
But if they pressure you to associate with Me what
you have no knowledge of,do not obey them. Still
keep their company in this world courteously, and
follow the way of those who turn to Me ˹in devotion˺.
Then to Me you will ˹all˺ return, and then I will inform
you of what you used to do.
This establishes the importance of obeying and
honoring one's parents. But if you explore closely,
you realize that Allah subhanahu watalaa has
compared the act of obeying and honoring one's
parents to the first two pieces of advice. Allah tells
us to be grateful to Allah and to our Parents. And if
your parents pressure you into the most evil of sins,
associating partners with Allah, you still have to
honor them, and keep their company, even if you
cannot obey them. Because obeying Allah is
ultimately the most important thing you can do.
What does this mean for the children that disobey,
dishonor, and bring distress and shame to their
parents when their parents are raising them as they
were ordered to by the Quran and the Sunnah?
Brothers and sisters, honor your parents and obey
them for the sake of Allah, As Allah has ordered you
to do so multiple times in the Quran,
For your Lord has decreed that you worship none
but Him. And honour your parents. If one or both of
them reach old age in your care, never say to them
˹even˺ ooff,’ nor yell at them. Rather, address them
respectfully. And be humble with them out of mercy,
and pray, “My Lord! Be merciful to them as they
raised me when I was young.”
Once again, the act of tawheed, worshiping only
allah, and the act of honoring and obeying the
parents are joined in the same ayah. Furthermore,
Allah forbids you from saying أفor raising your voice
at them. Allah even orders you to make dua for your
parents who raised you when you were young.
Brothers and sisters, we live in a country in which it
is the norm for parents to work all their life to support
their children, but when they reach an old age, they
are either left to take care of themselves or are put in
an old age home in the care of strangers. These are
not the traits of a Muslim. Take care of your parents
the same way they took care of you, and insha Allah
your children will do the same for you. And if one or
both of your parents are no longer alive, your duty to
them does not end. Allah says in the next ayah,
And be humble with them out of mercy, and pray,
“My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me
”when I was young
However the relationship between a parent and child
is not monodirectional, it goes both ways. So to all
the parents, be gentle with your children. If you
notice, Luqman the Wise always addresses his son,
My dear son. He is gentle and affectionate, he is not
accusatory or authoritative. And there is indeed
wisdom in that, because that is the best way to give
advice. Subhan Allah, Luqman the wise is also
advising his son on how to give advice, and its
presence in the Quran is a sign that it is also how we
are instructed to give advice.
Now the next piece of advice from Luqman the wise
is a demonstration of the power of Allah.
˹Luqmân added,˺ “O my dear son! ˹Even˺ if a deed
were the weight of a mustard seed—be it ˹hidden˺ in
a rock or in the heavens or the earth—Allah will
bring it forth. Surely Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware.
Now the attentive amongst us may be thinking,
brother, you said this was advice, this is not advice,
it is Luqman simply stating a fact. However, brothers
and sisters, the advice in this is to preform every
action no matter how big or how small, no matter
how important, regardless of weather you are being
watched by other people or not, with full awareness
that Allah is watching you, and hearing you, and that
these actions are being put on your record, in your
book which will be presented to you on the day of
Judgment.
If this seems familiar, it is because, in this ayah,
Luqman is actually advising his son with Ihsan.
As a reminder,
Ihsan, is to worship Allah as if you see Him, because
even though you do not see Him, He sees you.
The example of a tiny mustard seed that is
embedded in a boulder, that could be anywhere in
the universe, that Allah with complete ease and
precision can bring forth. You can hide nothing from
Allah, so it is best for you to have nothing to hide.
The next ayah has four pieces of advice.
O my dear son! Establish prayer, encourage what is
good and forbid what is evil, and endure patiently
whatever befalls you. Surely this is a resolve to
aspire to.
When it comes to prayer, Luqman the wise did not
say, perform the prayer, rather, he said establish the
prayer. And performing the prayer is not the same as
establishing it.
Brothers and sisters the importance of getting the
salah right cannot be expressed. When the Quran
was first being revealed to the prophet SAW, the
second revelation of the Quran to Muhammad SAW
was surat Al Mudathir. And one day after this surah
was revealed, Gibreel AS came to the prophet SAW,
taught him how to perform wudu, and then he taught
him how to pray. What I’m trying to say here is that
the Salah is an essential part of islam, it was one of
the first things taught to the prophet SAW about
Islam, and it is, as such, equally important to learn
how to, and strive to, establish it in a manner that
pleases Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Issa AS, one of his miracles was the ability to talk in
his infancy to protect the honor of his mother and
establish himself as a servant and messenger of
Allah. When he first talks in his infancy what does he
say?
˹Jesus˺ declared, “I am truly a servant of Allah. He
has destined me to be given the Scripture and to be
a prophet.
He has made me a blessing wherever I go, and bid
me to establish prayer and give charity as long as I
live,
And subhana Allah, the ayah right after this is about
obeying and honoring the parents:
and to be kind to my mother. He has not made me
arrogant or defiant.
For another example,
Musa AS, Kaleemu Allah, He was the prophet that
spoke to Allah. In the first conversation between
Musa AS and Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala as Musa
approached what he thought was a fire, what did
Allah say?
But when he approached it, he was called, “O
Moses!
It is truly I. I am your Lord! So take off your sandals,
for you are in the sacred valley of Ṭuwa.
I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed:
‘It is truly I. I am Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of
worship˺ except Me. So worship Me ˹alone˺, and
establish prayer for My remembrance.
When Ibrahim AS was making dua for him and his
family, he said
My Lord! Make me and those ˹believers˺ of my
descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my
supplication.
Subhanallah if we continue to the next ayah we
discover that he also makes dua for his parents,
Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers
on the Day when the judgment will come to pass.”
Back to establishing the prayer, as you see,
establishing the prayer is often one of the first things
the prophets are ordered to do, and it is also
prevalent that they ask for success in establishing
the prayer in their supplication. This only goes to
show how essential it is to us in our worship of Allah.
a few more ayat in the Quran reveal the importance
of establishing the prayer.
When the prayers are over, remember
Allah—whether you are standing, sitting, or lying
down. But when you are secure, establish regular
prayers. Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the
believers at the appointed times.
Observe the ˹five obligatory˺ prayers—especially the
middle prayer1—and stand in true devotion to Allah.
In fact, When people in hellfire are asked,
How did you end up in Jahanam?
What is the first thing they say?
We were not among those who prayed.
In the interest of time I will move on from this point
brothers and sisters, but I encourage you to read
more into the idea of establishing the prayer
because it is of utmost importance to us as Muslims.
And it is the reason that Luqman advised his son to
establish prayer.
In that ayah, Luqman also advised his son to
encourage good and forbid evil.

Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree (may Allah be pleased
:with him) said
I heard the Messenger of Allah SAW
say, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change
it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then
[let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not
able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the
]weakest of faith.” [Muslim
And so the importance of changing what is around
you from evil into good by forbidding evil and
replacing it with good is a requirement upon us
muslims, and a requirement for our faith, even if it is
simply by making dua to Allah when we find
ourselves unable to do more than that.
And to seal this Ayah, Luqman the wise says and
endure patiently what befalls you.
The importance of sabr can be its own topic. All I will
mention today is that in the Quran, Allah says,
So endure ˹this denial, O Prophet,˺ with beautiful
patience.
Sabr, patience, is described as a beautiful trait.
Because when we are put in a difficult situation, and
we have patience, we pass the test, we succeed,
and we are rewarded in this dunya and the hereafter.
But if we don’t have sabr, first the situation is most
likely still going to be difficult, and on top of that we
end up losing in the hereafter as well. May Allah
allow us all to possess Sabr regardless of what
befalls us.
The next few pieces of advice are self explanatory
yet also extremely important.

“And do not turn your nose up to people, nor walk
pridefully upon the earth. Surely Allah does not like
whoever is arrogant, boastful.
And Be moderate in your pace. And lower your
voice, for the ugliest of all voices is certainly the
braying of donkeys.”
In these two verses, Luqman is telling his son the
importance of humility. That regardless of how
accomplished or of high status you believe yourself
to be, do not walk the earth with pride.
In another ayah Allah says
And do not walk on the earth arrogantly. Surely you
can neither crack the earth nor stretch to the height
of the mountains.
So keep your ego and your pride hidden, brothers
and sisters, because it is truly an ugly sight when
your entire personality is about how highly you think
of yourself.
And with that brothers and sisters, we conclude the
advice that Luqman the wise bestows upon is son
from the wisdom that Allah bestowed upon him. And
that in turn, the Quran revealed to us to think about
and put into action. Advice so important that it was
forever preserved in the Quran.
I say what you hear and I seek Allah’s forgiveness
for myself and all of you, indeed he is the most
forgiving, the most merciful.

When we all walk away from here today, I want all of
us to be thinking about the importance of tawheed,
praising Allah, Obeying and honoring our parents,
having Ihsan and taqwa of Allah, establishing our
prayers, encouraging good, forbidding evil, and
having patience and humility.
Indeed implementing this advice will transform you
as a person. Take the example of just one of those
pieces of advice, let's say the one that seems the
least important. To lower our voices when speaking
and avoid initiating the braying of donkeys. Think of
two people saying the same thing, except one of
them is screaming it and the other is speaking with a
normal voice. Which one of those people do you
think is more sane, more behaved, more intelligent,
more pious. And it may not be the case that the one
with the quieter voice is more sane or pious, but
what impression do you get. Which one of the two
people do you want to be around.
Remember, this was the piece of advice people
think is least important. So brothers and sisters, as I
conclude this khutba, and before you leave the
masjid, I want you to think about what you will
change in your life in order to better implement the
advice of Luqman.
