Plan of Investigation
My group members and I chose the topic “Human Trafficking.” However, I decided to focus on
the causes of child trafficking. This topic piqued my interest after discovering that a lot of
children were being trafficked worldwide. By understanding the causes of child trafficking I can
raise awareness about human traffickers and contribute to a safer society.
In order to complete my investigation, I plan to read an article entitled “What is Human
Trafficking?”. Additionally, I intend to read a poem entitled “Child Trafficking.” Lastly, I will be
watching a video entitled “What is Human Trafficking?”.
By researching the topic of Human Trafficking, this School Based Assessment (SBA) will
deepen my understanding of this global problem. This knowledge will allow me to hone valuable
academic skills such as critical thinking as I am going to analyze information from various
sources.

What is Human Trafficking?
18th February 2022 by Evie Lee
The recent trial in New York of Ghislaine Maxwell for recruiting and trafficking young girls to
be sexually abused by the late American financier and paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, has brought
the issue of trafficking to news headlines across the globe.
Maxwell was found guilty on five of the six counts she faced, including the most serious charge,
that of sex trafficking a minor.
The other offences are:
● Transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
● Conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
● Conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.
● Conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts.
She was found not guilty of one count, that is enticement of a minor to travel to engage in illegal
sex acts. Currently 60-year-old Maxwell is awaiting sentencing but faces up to 65 years in jail; a
term which goes someway to reflect the seriousness of the offences and the negative impact on
victims of these crimes.
Human trafficking takes many different forms and happens in every country in the world. The
causes of human trafficking are complex, and there are numerous contributing factors. However,
4
the root causes behind all types of human trafficking remain essentially the same, traffickers
target people who are marginalized or in difficult circumstances in order to make huge sums of
money for themselves. A root cause is the basis or reason that results in some action or behaviour
occurring; it triggers something to happen. Some of the main root causes of human trafficking
include:
Systemic poverty and socio-economic inequality – Poverty is probably the biggest root cause of
human trafficking. It can tempt people to become traffickers, it can drive parents to sell children
or other family members into slavery, and it can persuade people who have little or no means of
financial support to be taken in by traffickers. Poverty also plays a huge part in many of the other
root causes of trafficking.
Trafficking generates huge profits for the traffickers – One of the main root causes of human
trafficking is the huge profits that traffickers gain. This is an incentive for them to continue
trafficking people in forced or bonded labour and sex trafficking. For traffickers using forced and
bonded labourers, they get cheap or virtually no-cost labour and can sell their products or
services at a much higher margin than those who have to pay their workers legitimately. For
those who engage in sex trafficking, they often take nearly all the profit, forcing their victims to
make a certain amount each day and keeping them in the situation often through drugs, violent
force and threats. Commercialized sex is a profitable market that allows traffickers to
significantly benefit financially from their victims. According to the US State Department human
trafficking has become the most lucrative crime business after drugs. Demand for cheap labour –
Basic economics tell us that for a market to form, supply and demand need to exist. The demands
for cheap labour leads to opportunities for traffickers to exploit people. Lack of legitimate
economic opportunities – Traffickers are able to exploit situations in any country where there are
5
few or limited legitimate economic opportunities for people to earn a living. Conflict and war
zones – In countries that are involved in conflict, the volatile situation can lead to economic
instability and lack of human rights, where some rebel or military groups will use child soldiers
and keep sex slaves. Additionally, both conflict and natural disaster can lead people to migrate
out of their hometowns and homelands, making them more vulnerable to traffickers, especially if
they are looking for work or getting into debt, paying smugglers to get them to where they want
to go. Some of these countries are also a home to corruption and organized crime.
Trafficking ultimately exists because certain people are willing to exploit others into trafficking
situations, either because of the profit or because of a belief that certain people are worth less or
because of a system of abuse and crime that they were raised in.

Reflection 1
The article was very informative, and it showed me that children were being trafficked for a
variety of reasons such as cleaning. Moreover, I Initially thought that Child Trafficking was not a
serious issue. However, after reading the article, I was shocked to find out that Child Trafficking
is a worldwide problem.
The second piece was a poem that I downloaded from the internet. The poem highlights that
many Inhumane Traffickers will do almost anything for a profit. Furthermore, this poem helped
me to understand that some doctors assist human traffickers to harvest the children’s organs to
earn a profit.
Lastly, after watching the video, which speaks about the signs and causes of child trafficking, I
have learned that most child Trafficking cases go unnoticed. But, at the end of the day, more can
be done about child trafficking.
8
Reflection 2
In the article entitled “What is Human Trafficking?” written by Evie Lee, the writer made a use
of statistics. In the article, it was noted that the International Labour Organization (ILO) has
estimated that 40.3 million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking. The use of
statistics shows that the information is reliable and can be verified by an organization.
In the video entitled “What is Child Trafficking?” I noticed the use of examples to explain the
reasons for child trafficking. These include sexual exploitation and forced begging. This was
effective because the reader can understand how serious and widespread the issue is.
In the poem entitled “Child Trafficking” by Bireswar Hadler, a rhetorical question was used,
"Are we observing silence for the dead or living human beings?” This is effective as it provokes
the reader's thoughts, appealing to their emotions and evoking feelings of fear and anger.
9
Reflection 3
After writing this School Based Assessment (SBA) on the causes of child trafficking, this has
made me more cognizant and aware towards this serious problem. Furthermore, doing the
research and presenting on this topic has significantly improved my thinking and writing skills.
Collaborating with my team members showed me how imperative teamwork can be, as we all
worked together to complete the project.

Plan of Oral Presentation
Theme: Human Trafficking
Topic: Causes of Child Trafficking
Genre: Informative speech
Source: What is Human Trafficking?” written by Evie Lee https://cpdonline.co.uk/knowledge-

Bireswar Hadler https://images.app.goo.gl/2CpEjqbMFSAw6E3Q8
Language Used: Standard English
Main Idea: My speech will inform and give my classmates new knowledge and comprehension
about the causes of Child Trafficking. It will let them know that child trafficking is a serious
worldwide issue and it is vital to raise awareness and know the signs of child trafficking. Two
causes of child trafficking are : 1 forced labour, this includes cleaning and car washing to earn a
profit. 2 Sexual Exploitation in which human traffickers threaten children through drugs, violent
force and threats as a means of controlling them to have unwanted sex and earn a profit..

Group Written Report
Human Trafficking is the theme my group chose, because we speculated that human trafficking
is a global issue that can happen to anyone. Furthermore, we discussed that Human Trafficking
would be easier to source because it has been occurring for many years and there are many news
reports of missing persons, especially children and women. The topics my group members will
be focusing on are causes of child trafficking, solutions and how to prevent or solve human
trafficking, effects of human trafficking on adults and the negative effects of human trafficking.
We chose four sources that elaborated on the topic in its entirety. We used an article entitled “
7 in 10 human trafficking victims are women and girls. What are the psychological effects ?
“written by Amy Novotney on April 24, 2023, which speaks about the mental and physical
effects of human trafficking .In addition to this, another article was used which is “Causes and
Effects of Human Trafficking written by Micah Hartmann on July 6, 2021.Moreover, a third
article entitled “10 ways to stop Human Trafficking” was selected, as it pertains to the solutions
for human trafficking, and it was written by Our Rescue(an organization) on June 3, 2024. This
article is about. Furthermore; the fourth source is a video entitled “What is Child Trafficking”
from Mecapaths project. This video entails the signs and causes of child trafficking.
My group met face to face every English Language to ensure that the deadlines for our School
Based Assessment could be met at a timely manner. Within those sessions we contemplated our
ideas and worked together as a group. Group work has taught us the value of cooperation and
accepting positive criticism. Each group member fulfilled their expectations. Therefore, our
English School Based Assessment objectives have been met.
