How to use this course and practice at home?


Watch each video-lesson to learn everything about the pronunciation of
each sound and letter combination in French.

Listen multiple times to the recordings. Pronunciation is closely linked to


your ability to hear the sound. Listening to them often will help you to hear
the sound correctly to get the pronunciation right. "If you can't hear it, you
can't pronounce it".

Practice your pronunciation like the recordings "Focus on specific letter /


sound " followed by the " Specific letter / sound in words".
When you feel ready, record yourself and listen back-to-back to my
recording and yours. This will give you the opportunity to practice alone
and correct yourself if needed.

How to keep learning by yourself?


Check the pronunciation of a specific word:
Simply google "WORD pronunciation IPA" (IPA stands for "International
Phonetic Alphabet). This search will bring you to the Wikipedia page of the
said word. You will have the opportunity to look at its phonetic and use the
player to listen to the word. If you don't need the IPA, you can also use
google translate. The pronunciation is not always great but that will give
you a general idea.

Practice listening and reading at the same time:

This solution isn't always the most affordable but If you are a book person,
choose a book you like and buy the audiobook as well as the eBook or
physical book. Listen to the audiobook and read at the same time.
This will train your ear to all the different sounds as well as train your brain
to recognize the letters combination, silent letters, and links.
This will also give you the chance to learn new vocabulary.

Another method is to watch TV in French with French subtitles. This is


always the last one I recommend because actors (or voice over) tend to
speak fast and not always as clearly as an audiobook.

Accents in French have very specific roles. In some
cases, such as the letter E, the accents will radically
change its pronunciation.
" Accent aigu " only appears on the letter E.
The " accent grave ", except on E, is used to
differentiate words with and without accent, without
changing the pronunciation of the letter. We will
look more into it in the next few pages.
The " accent circonflexe " and especially "Ê"
indicates that the letter used to be followed by a S.
We removed the S and added a ^.
The " tréma " specifically means that we have to
pronounce the vowel distinctively.
And finally, the " cédille ", simply sounds like a S.

The accent " tréma " indicates that the vowel has to be pronounced
separately from the one immediately before it. We used it on ë - ï .

Mute letters, also called silent letters, is the
pronunciation rule that confuse French learners the
most. Some letters are important for grammar and
spelling but don't change the pronunciation of the
word itself.
They are usually at the end of the word with a few
exceptions at the beginning and in the middle of the
words.

Contractions or " Élisions " in French, happen when a noun, a verb or a


preposition start with a vowel or a h muet (see more about this subject at
H).
They are important to keep a good flow of pronunciation.

closed. Then try to pinch your nose – What happens? The sound
is impossible to make if you block your nose.

A good example of nasal vowels are the English words

The sound R in French is very different than the English one. The English
one comes from the middle of the mouth, while the French R comes from
the throat. It's similar to a gargling sound.
Note that in the IPA, the letter R can also be represented as [R ] or [ʁ].

A good way to practice R in French is by putting a pencil between your


teeth. Doing so will keep your tongue at the back of your mouth and force
you to pronounce R from your throat.

The French stress is barely noticeable. While it is present on the last


syllable of each word (besides one-syllable words) and each sentence, it's
easy to miss.

French is what we call a " syllable-timed language " which means that
each syllable has to be pronounced the same length. It's very different from
English, which is a " stress-timed language ".

The stress in English can fall on any syllable.


Let's have a look at a word used in English and in French:

If you ever wonder why French people don't add any stress while speaking
English, this is why.

English: Imagination
French: Imagina tion

Like I said, the stress is hard to hear in French. I always say, at the
beginning, instead of worrying about adding the stress correctly, try to not
add any stress. It will be closer to the real pronunciation.

The stress that you should absolutely add is what is called "the inflection"
added by a question mark.
