Chapter 1:Characteristics Of Life
Biology is a study of living organisms, their interactions with each other & their
environment.
Characteristics Of Living Organisms
•
• Movement
• Reproduction
• Sensitivity
• Growth
• Respiration
• Excretion
• Nutrition
What is movement?
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or
place.
What is reproduction?
The processes that make more of the same kind of organism.
What is sensitivity?
The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment & to make responses.
What is growth?
The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment & to make responses.
What is respiration?
The processes that make more of the same kind of organism.
The processes that make more of the same kind of organism.
What is excretion?
The removal from organisms of toxic materials, waste products of chemical
reactions in cells & excess substances.
What is nutrition?
The process of taking in of nutrients (organic substances & mineral ions)
containing energy or raw materials for growth and tissue repair.
What is nutrition?
The process of taking in of nutrients (organic substances & mineral ions)
containing energy or raw materials for growth and tissue repair. The organism
absorbs these materials which become a part of the organism (assimilation).
All organisms are designed to carry out these processes efficiently.
