Karam Measuring Units & Olympic Games 30/11/2024
: Introduction
Olympic games started in Olympia, Greece, the first official Olympics was
held in Athenas in 1896. They were held in honor of god Zeus and it took place
every four years, at the begging it had one running event and it took 1 day but
.over years they added new events, which led to expand it for 5 years
Some of the Olympics were cancelled due to world wars and pandemics as
.1916,1940,1944 and 2020 was delayed till 2021
The first Olympic games included 241 athletes from different 14 countries as
they shared in 43 events. As years passed Olympic games developed and
expanded their games, as Winter Olympic Games for snow and ice sports,
Paralympic Games for athletes with a disability and youth Olympic Games for
athletes aged 14 to 18, and they all cost on average of 5.2 million. (City of
Parramatta , 2020)

What measuring systems of units and the common units of measurement
(time, distance, mass, ....) used in track and field events at the Olympic
?Games
In Olympics they use different systems in different fields as distance, time and
mass. In 1904 St. Louis and 1908 London Olympics they used imperial units,
these two was the only two Olympics which used imperial, rather than that
Olympics were only measured by SI unit system(International System of
Units),(metric).for an example, in distance like track and fields events they
always use centi meters ,meters or Kilo meters in races like 100m race for men
and women,400m hurdles for men and women, 4*400 relay for men and
women and they use it in marathons and 20Km race walk relay.(Citius Mag,
July 27, 2024), moreover athletes compete within 5 weight categories, Women
international competitive categories: 49 kg, 59 kg, 71 kg, 81 kg, and +81
kg. Men's international competitive categories: 61 kg, 73 kg, 89 kg, 102 kg, and
+102 kg.(national institute of standards and technology,Jul 21, 2023)
Give examples for three different games including the world and Olympic
..records for these games
All events in Olympics have their holder and the holder of the golden medal, to
get the medal you should deserve it ,so here are some examples, In fields and
track events specifically distance, the holder of the 800m race in men is David
Rudisha ( KEN ) 1:40.91 and in women Jarmila Kratochvílová ( TCH ) 1:53.28
(1983), for an instance, the highest jump (height) holder is Charles austin in
1996 in Atalanta, Italy which is 2.39 meters high and there is the women
highest jump 2.06 meters(Outperform,2024) , and there is the holder of time
games (swimming and cycling, for 100m) in men is Pan Zhanle who took
.46.40 seconds and there is Emma McKeon who took 51.96 seconds

Explain the significance of accurate time measurement in swimming and running
?events at the Olympics, how time is measured
Most of the events in Olympics use accurate time measurement, it used mostly
in swimming, running and cycling .for instance in running , when the voice of
the gun gets out from the loudspeaker the race starts, moreover there is a photo
finish camera which shows the finish line time. These two tools are connected
to a timing console which displays the race time . (2024, HowStuffWorks)
Figure1.2:tools used in running.(2024, HowStuffWorks)
As an another example there is cycling, in the start and the end they used
antennas placed on the road, loop activator senses the rider and send it to AMB
active decoder which displays race data.(2024, HowStuffWorks)

What is the importance of using standardized units of measurement in comparing
?performances across different Olympic sports
Olympic games use metric units in different events, however there is a reason
behind using it in every event. Its important in qualifying so they don’t change
the units every time and to keep the world record in the same unit every year,
.to compare the new generation with the old one, and to give accurate results
Discuss two interacting factors (social, economic, political, environmental,
.cultural and ethical) related to Olympic games
Olympics are games that the athletes compete in, however that is not the only t
impact that Olympics does, It effects people and countries. Olympics effect
economics of the country, specifically travel and tourism industry and the
athletes visit the country before 6 months and they keep their for 6 months after
.the Olympic games.(Investopedia, 2024)
also it affect the culture, Olympics gather people together from different
countries to watch or to play in Olympics, and it talks about different countries
in the opening ceremony. For instance, the 2008 Beijing Games displayed the
Chinese history and culture, while the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games celebrated
Brazil’s music and dances.(YOUTH FOR UNDERSTANDING
)Intercultural Exchange Programs,2024

Why do you think that there are people (countries) who always win certain
?Olympic Games
Every game has its dominator, but have you wondered how the dominate the
game? I think that the domination of the game depends on the way of living
and some kids dreams of being the holder of the gold medal as he wants to
follow his idol steps, that because its small country so the chances of qualifying
would be higher, Not to forget that they live in harsh environment so they get
ambitious of getting rich and live happily with their families.for an example
there is kenya, kenya denominated the marathons more than one time.
(Olympics.com,2024)
.Figure 1.5:how does the lack of funding effect players .kenya’s denomination
:Conclusion
To sum up, Olympics isn’t just games or competitions, it’s a way of sharing
culture and help players and countries economically. For this assignment , I
have only one suggestion to provide how much and who pays for the winners,
rather than that I don’t have any suggestions as it covers the whole
.understanding of Olympic games and it shows it prominent significance
