Problem 1 (Level Curves of a Falling Drop) Common Issues: Some students


approached this as a physics problem, discussing thermophysical properties like
temperature and viscosity. Remember, the primary focus here is on contour maps;
pay attention to whether numbers are equally spaced. Additionally, review the
contour map for a perfect sphere to reinforce the concept.

Problem 2 (Domain and Range of a Function) Common Issues: Standard notation


for illustrating domain and range needs careful attention. When analyzing the range
of a fractional function, examine both the numerator and denominator and include
all aspects of the domain, like exclusions and holes.

Problem 3 (Level Curves, Gradient, and Tangent Line for a Quadratic Function)
Common Issues: When working with a quadratic form, always consider completing
the square to identify the shape, like a circle or parabola. Remember, a tangent line
is different from a tangent plane, so choose the correct formula. The gradient
vector is always normal to a curve, which is crucial when setting up tangent lines.

Problem 4 (Continuity and Momentum PDEs) Common Issues: The main issue here
was applying the chain rule correctly for second derivatives. Review chain rule
applications to avoid errors in future assessments.

Problem 5 (Tangent Plane to Ellipsoid) Common Issues: Understand that if the dot

explicitly provided, it often means they will cancel out in calculations. For maximum
error, remember to take absolute values before adding.

Problem 7 (Second Order Chain Rule) Common Issues: Be sure to review Clairaut’s
theorem and understand the expansion of second-order derivatives. Correct
application here is key to solving such problems accurately.
