Marketing Strategies in Selling Products:

1. Retailing
It is directly selling the products from the farm to the consumers or
products are sold by unit (a piece or kilo) in the market. Although
it’s time and energy consuming, farmers get more profit by this
method of selling that wholesale.
2. Use of Middlemen
Middlemen are also known as “Traders”. They buy the products from
the farm at a lower price and resell these to retailers or small stores.
The middlemen earns by transporting the products from the farm to
the market and sold it at a higher price.
3. Selling in the farm
Buyers go directly to the farm to buy farm products. Prices are
usually cheaper because farmers do not need to transport their
products to the market to save time, money, and efforts.
4. Selling through Contracts
Contracts are usually done by manufacturing companies when there
is a need for a big volume of products. It can also be entered into by
middlemen who resell the products to retailers in big markets. In a
contract, both the farmers and the buyers agree on an amount to be
paid for a specified volume of products. For example, harvested
crops in a hectare plantation of carrots will be given to a company at
a specified date, at a specified period. This means that the farmer is
not allowed to sell any of the products to other buyers except the
company or person of whom the contract has been signed.
5. Selling through Cooperatives
Cooperatives are non-profit organizations of workers. They own and
manage the organization and prioritize the product sold by their
organization. If a cooperative can buy products directly from the
farmers at low prices, then the products can be sold to its members
at low prices too. Whatever income or profit earned by the
organization is usually divided among its member depending on the
number of shares or stocks each one owns.
6. Word-of-mouth Marketing
This is a strategy where the experience of satisfied customers leads
them to tell stories about the product they have used. A useful way
of promoting the products without any cost incurred.
7. Free sample Marketing
It is a marketing strategy in which the owners convince the
consumers or buyers through giving free samples of the product to
try.
E. Discussing new Elements to be observed in planting trees and fruit-bearing
concepts and trees
practicing new skills #2 1. Proper care of plants and soil
Proper care of plants and soil is necessary for a healthy and
bountiful harvest.
a. Choose the best place for planting
Trees and fruit trees require more space for growth than
ornamental plants or crops.
b. Choose the seeds that best suit the season and the soil
This means that the seeds come from a good quality
mother and the seeds are healthy, mature, with no
blemishes or cuts, and of the right size and form.
c. Put sufficient fertilizers in the soil
This means cleaning the soil and its surrounding are
and mixing the soil with organic fertilizers. Organic
fertilizers are safe and economical to use, while inorganic
fertilizers have to be regulated because overuse can poison
the soil. A rich soil is 40%clay loam,30% compost,
20%dried carabao manure or chicken dung, and 10%
sand. Remember, plants need nitrogen, phosphorous, and
potassium to grow and to make them resistant to pests
and diseases.
d. Take care of the soil and the plants regularly
Caring for the young trees means removing the grass
and weeds around them so they do not compete in getting
the nutrients from the soil.
2. Methods of Planting
There are two ways of planting: direct and indirect.
Direct planting is a method of planting where the seeds or
parts of the plant are directly planted in the soil where it
germinates and grow into full-grown trees while indirect
planting is where the plants to be transferred to its
permanent place. This is commonly done with the trees.
3. Preparing Seeds for Planting
Ways of preparing seeds
a. Placing the seeds under the sun
b. Some seeds like the mango have to be removed from the
hard shells before planting
c. Seeds like santol need to be dried before planted in the soil
d. There are also seeds that need to be soaked in water before
planting.
4. Seed germination
Seeds need moisture, warmth, oxygen, and sunlight to
germinate.
5. Preparation of Seedlings Before Transplanting
Mortality high during transplanting if the seedlings are
not given proper care.
To ensure a higher rate of survival,
the following processes are needed:

6. Indirect Planting – The plant needs to be transferred to its permanent place.

Steps in the proper transferring of plants
a. Place the seedlings away from the direct sunlight. Make sure the seedlings are healthy and fresh
before planting.
b. Dig the area where you plant them. For big trees like santol, mango, or acacia, the hole is one meter
wide, one meter deep and one meter long. For small trees like atis, chico, avocado and kasoy, the hole
should measure 2 inches deep, 20 inches wide and 20 inches long.
c. Remove the plants from the plastic. Do not remove the soil which holds the roots.
d. Slowly and carefully place the seedlings in the hole.
e. Cover it with soil. Press the soil lightly.
f. Water the new the plant early the next morning. Use a water sprinkler. It is important to water the soil
that surrounds the plants.

E. Discussing new Elements to be observed in planting trees and fruit-bearing
concepts and trees
1. Proper care of plants and soil
practicing new skills #2 Proper care of plants and soil is necessary for a healthy and
bountiful harvest.
There are two ways of planting: direct and indirect.Direct planting is a method of
planting where the seeds or parts of the plant are directly planted in the soil where
it
germinates and grow into full-grown trees while indirectplanting is where the plants
to be transferred to itspermanent place. This is commonly done with the trees.
3. Preparing Seeds for PlantingWays of preparing seeds
a. Placing the seeds under the sun
b. Some seeds like the mango have to be removed from thehard shells before
planting
c. Seeds like santol need to be dried before planted in the soil
d. There are also seeds that need to be soaked in water beforeplanting.
4. Seed germinationSeeds need moisture, warmth, oxygen, and sunlight to
germinate.
5. Preparation of Seedlings Before TransplantingMortality high during transplanting
if the seedlings arenot given proper care.
To ensure a higher rate of survival,
the following processes are needed:
6. Indirect Planting – The plant needs to be transferred to its
permanent place.
Steps in the proper transferring of plants
a. Place the seedlings away from the direct sunlight. Make
sure the seedlings are healthy and fresh before planting.
b. Dig the area where you plant them. For big trees like
santol, mango, or acacia, the hole is one meter wide, one
meter deep and one meter long. For small trees like atis,
chico, avocado and kasoy, the hole should measure 20
inches deep, 20 inches wide and 20 inches long.
c. Remove the plants from the plastic. Do not remove the soil
which holds the roots.
d. Slowly and carefully place the seedlings in the hole.
e. Cover it with soil. Press the soil lightly.
f. Water the new the plant early the next morning. Use a
water sprinkler. It is important to water the soil that
surrounds the plants.

F. Developing mastery I. Directions: Read and answer the following questions.

D. Discussing new Orchard is a piece of land planted with fruit trees or nut trees. It is also
concepts and practicing known as fruit farm. Therefore, an orchard can have any kind of fruit trees in it,
be
new
it mango, papaya, orange, duhat, banana, etc.
skills #1 Types of Orchard Farms

1. Fruit Orchards
These orchard focuses on growing trees and fruit bearing trees of
which they were famous in the different parts of the country like mango,
pomelo, durian, santol, jackfruit, mangosteen, avocado, rambutan and
other fruits located anywhere in the country.
2. Nut Orchards
Nut orchards include a large variety of facilities that produce nutbearing trees.
These include orchards that grow popular nuts like peanut,
cashews, walnuts and 26 almonds. This category also includes cocoa and
chocolate-producing nuts, as well as coconuts. Some orchard owners
produce pine trees for their edible pine nuts.
3. Seed Orchards
Seed orchards focus primarily on growing plants that produce seeds
like tomato, petchay and radish, bell pepper, string beans, eggplants,
cabbage and etc. These seeds are then sold to commercial distributors for
resale to the public in small seed packets. They may also be sold to large
agricultural facilities or used for food production.

Other Types of Orchard

1. Christmas Tree Farm
It is a type of orchard where an occupation involves growing pine trees
specifically for use as Christmas trees. This farm can be located at Baguio
and Tagaytay.
2. Coffee Producing Farm

skills #1

To increase the number of our plants or fruit trees, we need to know the
different methods of plant propagation.
Plant propagation is a method of reproducing, increasing, or multiplying plant
species.
Three (3) Methods of Plant Propagation
1. Budding it’s a process by which a scion is inserted into the rootstock to
unite and grow as one. It is done by choosing and cutting a bud from one
plant and attaching it to another plant. The bud must fit well to the mother
plant. When the bud grows big enough it will become part of the plant.

2. Marcotting (Air layering) is a propagation method for woody plants that

allows you to root branches while still attached to the parent plant. It is
useful for plants that are hard to propagate by cutting.

3. Grafting is a plant propagation method that involves inserting a scion

into astock so that they will form a union and grow together.

E. Discussing new Maintaining your seedlings:

1. Thin Seedlings as needed. Plants in your garden do not like to be crowded.
concepts and 2. Give them plenty of light. As soon as the newborn seedling begins to
practicing new emerge, it seeks light. Your newborn needs as much direct light source as
possible.
skills #2
3. Keep the seedlings moist. Provide water to your seedling every couple of
days.

4. Feed the seedlings. The seedling does not need a of extra nutrients in its
first few days of life. After several days, adding a little liquid fertilizer to the
water is helpful, but you do not need to give it full strength.
5. Guard against Damping off disease. Damping off disease is a white mold
that forms in the top of the soil. It flourishes in cold, wet damp weather
along with little sunshine. It quickly spreads across the soil and wilts the
seedling.

D. Discussing new Trees in an orchard must get proper care to make them grow healthy.
Proper care of trees needs proper care of soil, too. This include the application
concepts and of fertilizer to control and eradicate insects pest and diseases.
practicing new Planting requires not only effort but also dedication. It is not an
overnight process but a lengthy and time consuming endeavor which is greatlydependent on strictly
skills #1 observing the essential elements that make planting andgrowing of its seedlings successful. It doesn’t
take a green thumb to grow plants. Anyone can plant, you
could be one. Would you like to become a successful planter? Well, you are in
the right track for this lesson will help you become one.

Tips on How to Care Transferred Tree Seedlings

1. Cultivating/Preparing – this is the process of tilling or loosening the
soil around the plants. This allows for easy absorption of water and
fertilizers in the root of the seedlings for faster growth. When cultivating
be sure to remove stems, gravel and other foreign materials around the
plants.
Cultivating the land is practiced to help promote the growth of roots and
improved aeration for fast absorption of nutrients by the soil.
Two ways of cultivating the Land
• Off-barring - cultivating the soil in rows.
• Hilling up – cultivating the soil towards the base of the
plant. When cultivation is done properly, the growth of
weeds can be controlled. Soil texture will improve plant
growth and distractive microorganisms found in the soil
will eventually die.
2. Watering – seedlings need water to keep them healthy. Keep the soil
moist by watering the seedlings in the early morning or late afternoon.
Three (3) Ways of Watering the Plants
❖Natural – Watering the plants through the rain.
❖Manual – Watering the plants using the pail and dipper or
water sprinkler.
❖Artificial – water produced from a deep well, dams, and rivers
with the help of motors.
3. Putting Organic Fertilizers - fertilizers contain the nutrient that plants
and trees need to grow. Fertilizers are enriching materials used on land
to increase its productivity. Excessive amount of fertilizers can kill the
plants.
Fertilizer is a substance added to the soil that promotes the healthy
growth of plants.
Fertilizer is classified into two types:
❖Organic Fertilizer – natural fertilizer from decayed
matter, animals and other natural sources.
❖Inorganic Fertilizer- artificial fertilizer made from
chemicals (liquid soluble and other granular form).
Benefits of Using Organic Fertilizer
1. It is environment friendly. It does not harm the soil, unlike
inorganic fertilizer which can be toxic if applied in excess to
the soil.
2. It fertilizes the soil and improves its structure and fertility.
3. It is inexpensive.
4. It is safe to use

LAYOUT
new
The layout of the orchard is a very important operation. Under this, the
skills #1 arrangement of fruit plants in the plot is carefully done to put the plants at a
suitable distance for proper development and for accommodating the
requisite number of plants per unit area in addition to improving the aesthetic
look of the orchard.
Hence, the factors which are considered important for proper layout of the orchard are
(i) system of planting and (ii) planting distance of individual fruit species which again
would provide the following advantages:

1. Allow equidistance for each tree for uniform growth.

2. Allow easy orchard operations like cultivation, intercropping, irrigation, spraying of
plant protection chemicals and growth regulators, harvesting etc.
3. Proper utilization of orchard space avoiding wastage of land.
4. Help in proper supervision and management of the orchard.
5. Aloe further extension of area from time to time so that subsequent planting would
match with the existing orchard planting.
