There are FOUR questions in this section. Answer any THREE.

1. (a) The voltage and current at the terminals of a circuit element are shown in the (15)
figures below. Sketch the power versus t plot for 0  t  10 s. Also, calculate the
energy delivered to the element in 10 s.

(b) A battery provides 12.5 V to a radio and 11.7 V to a light bulb. The radio and light (15)
bulb can be modeled as 6.25 Ω resistor and 0.65 Ω resistor, respectively. Find the

5. (a) The four capacitors in the circuit in Fig. for Q. 5(a) are connected across the

(b) For the circuit of Figure for Q. 5(b), determine (i) v(O+) and i(O+), (ii) dv(O+)ldl and

6. (a) The switch in the Figure for Q. 6(a) was open for a long time before closing at 1 = O.

Find vo(l) for 1 ~ O. (18)


(b) The circuit of Figure for Q. 6(b) has been in operation for a long time. A
screwdriver is inadvertently connected across the terminals a, b. The resistance of the
screwdriver is negligible. (i) Find the current in the screwdriver at 1 = 0 and t = CXJ,

(ii) Derive the expression for the current in the screwdriver for t > O. (17)

7. (a) In the circuit shown in Figure for Q. 7(a), find i(t) for 1 > O. (20)
(b) The inductor current in the circuit in Figure for Q. 7(b) is 25 rnA at the instant the
switch is opened. The inductor will malfunction whenever the magnitude of the
inductor current equals or exceeds 5 A. How long after the switch is opened does the

inductor malfunction? (15)

8. (a) The core in Figure for Q. 8(a) is cast steel. Determine the current to establish an
airgap flux of 6 x 10-3 Wb. Neglect fringing. Use the B-H curves attached with the

question. (20)
(b) The core in Figure for Q. 8(b) is cast iron, NI = 1100 At, the cross-sectional area
everywhere is 25 cm2, 19 = 0.002 m, and liron = 0.2 m. Determine the flux in the core.

1. (a) The switch in the circuit in the Figure for Q. I(a) has been in position x for a long
time. The initial charge on the 60 nF capacitor is zero. At I = 0, the switch moves

instantaneously to position y. Find vo(1) and VI(I) for I ~o. (18)


(b) Find io(l) for the circuit of Figure for Q. I(b) for I > O. (17)

2. (a) Design the circuit in Figure for Q. 2(a)(i) to have the response in Figure for Q. 2(a) (ii). (16)
(b) Find v(l) for the circuit of Figure for Q. 2(b) for I > O. (19)

3. (a) The gap in the circuit seen in Figure for Q. 3(a) will arc over whenever the voltage
across the gap reaches 30 kV. The initial current in the inductor is zero. The value of f3 is

adjusted so the Thevenin resistance with respect to the terminals of the inductor is - 4 kQ. (18)
(i) What is the value of P?
(ii) How many microseconds after the switch has been closed will the gap arc over?
(b) The circuit shown in Figure for Q. 3(b) is at steady state before the switch closes at
time I = O. The switch remains closed for 1.5 s and then opens. Determine the inductor

current i(l) for I > O. (17)

4. (a) A cast steel magnetic circuit shown in Figure for Q. 4(a), has N = 2500 turns, I = 200 rnA,

and a cross-sectional area of 0.02 m . Assuming 90% of the mmf appears across the gap,

estimate the flux in the core (~], ~2 and ~3). Use the BH curves attached with the question. (20)
(b) The flux in the air gap in the circuit of Figure for Q. 4(b) is 30 flWb and N = 2000 turns.

(i) Find the Thevenin and Norton equivalent circuits at terminals A-B.

(ii) RL is adjusted for maximum power transfer to RL' Find the value ofRL. Also, find the

(iii) How much power does the 560 V source deliver to the circuit when RL is adjusted

for maximum power transfer?

(iv) RL is adjusted so that 40% of total power delivered in the circuit is in RL. Find the

value of RL for this case.
