SOIL REPORT

GENERAL REPORT
SL. No.: Span:
Block: Type:
Road Name: Pkg. No.:

1. SUBSOIL CONDITION & GENERALISED SOIL PROFILE:

The subsoils are of medium to good quality. It is characterised by soft / medium clayey silt followed by a loose to moderately dense silty
sand. At around 15/16m depth, we have stiff to very stiff clayey silt and continues for about 4/5m. Thereafter, the sand layer appears
again with high SPT values and continues up to the terminating depth for all the bore holes. The generalised soil profile is presented in
Fig. 2. The corrected “N” vs. depth plot has been shown in Fig. 3.

2. CHOICE OF FOUNDATION & FOUNDING LEVEL:

Open foundation can not be used due to poor subsoil condition. The top 5/6m soil is loose sand which is susceptible to liquefaction since
the site falls in high seismic zone (zone-IV). The proposed structure will be a Bridge. Considering the nature of the subsoil and the type of
structures to be constructed at the present site, it is suggested to go for deep foundation in form of pile. Bored cast in-situ piles are
preferred due to availability of construction agencies and ease of construction. Such piles may be placed at 14m to 17/18m below bottom
of pile cap depending on requirement.
Recommendation for RCC Pile of 1.2m diameter

3. BORED CAST IN-SITU PILES:

3.1. VERTICAL PILE CAPACITY
Maximum Scour Level from hydraulic calculation (presented separately),
Around Abutment Location = 95.889M
Around Pier Location = 93.763M
Bottom of Pile Cap:
Around Abutment Location = 94.02 M
Around Pier Location = 93.76 M
Since, the pile cap bottom is just below maximum scour level, let us assume that the increase in overburden pressure will take place right
from the bottom of the pile cap bottom.
Assume diameter of pile = 1200 mm

3.1.1. Determination of Design Strength Parameters:

STRATUM – I:
Average Corrected N = 21.92 Correspondence, f = 24.5 deg
Use Cohesion, C = 0 kg/sqcm
Use k 0 = 1.00

STRATUM – II:
Average Corrected N = 27.83 Correspondence, f = 33 deg
Use Cohesion, C = 0 kg/sqcm
Use k 0 = 1.00

STRATUM – III:
Average Corrected N = 31.5 Correspondence, f = 38.0 deg
Use Cohesion, C = 0 kg/sqcm
Use k 0 = 1.00

3.1.2. Determination of Vertical Pile Capacity:

The determination of vertical pile capacity for different founding level are calculated and presented separately.

3.2. HORIZONTAL PILE CAPACITY

Use Design “N”
Refer to IS : 2911 (Part I/Sec 2) - 1979, Appendix - C
Constant Factor, K1 in kg/cucm

T = [EI/K1]1/5

Now, I = 10.18 x 106 cm4 [for 1200mm dia pile]

E = 5000 x (fck)0.5 = 5000 x (35)0.5 = 29580.4 N/sqmm = 2.958 x 105 kg/sqcm
Pile Head deflection, Y = H x Lf3 / 12EI
4. CONCLUSION:
1. For the proposed Bridge, deep foundation in form of pile is suggested. Bored pile should be used due to availability of construction
agencies and less noise pollution.

2. The soil at the river bed location is clayey silt. So, scour will be less. However, to be in the safer side, use average weighted mean
diameter, dm = 0.369 mm for calculation of scour depth

3. The recommended pile capacities are given below.
