In 1895, William G. Morgan invented a


game that combined four different sports:
basketball, tennis, handball and baseball.
He called this new sport ‘Mintonette’.
Today we still play this sport, but we call
it ‘volleyball’. In Mintonette, the court was
15 metres long and 7 metres wide. There
could be as many players as you wanted.
In modern volleyball, the court is a bit
bigger – 18 metres long and 9 metres wide.
There are only six players in each team.
Today, a player serves the ball and the serve
is good even if it slightly touches the top of
the net as it goes over. In Mintonette, if the
ball hit the net, the point was for the other
team. Also, the players could touch the ball as many times as they wanted before passing it
to the other team. In volleyball, the players can only hit the ball up to three times.
