Introduction to the Module
This module presents basic Arabic communication tools which have to be known and at the same
time practiced by Ethiopian citizens working in household activities of the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia. It describes lexical items related to home chore activities in addition to providing
important expressions such as self-introduction, greeting, telephoning, circumstantial responding
of different commands and instructions during household tasks.
This module covers the units:-
 Introduction to Arabic;
 Self-introduction, greeting and telephoning;
 Understanding commands and instructions; and
 Circumstantial and other expressions.
Learning Objective of the Module:-
 Familiarize with Arabic language;
 Introduce themselves and practice greeting and telephoning;
 Understand commands and instructions;
 Respond and communicate;
 Describe circumstantial expressions; and
 Use lexical terminologies in relation to household tasks.
Module Instruction:-
For the effective use of this module, trainees are expected to follow the following module
instructions:
1. Read the specific objectives of all learning guides in each unit;
2. Understand outcomes of the learning topics;
3. Accomplish the “Self-check questions in each unit and trainees can ask if some
misunderstanding questions if there are ;
4. Submit your final work of the Self-check to your trainer. This will form part of your
training portfolio;
5. Demonstrate the activities in the operational sheet of each unit in pair.
6. Do all the questions and instructions tests in each unit as the trainer guides you.

Unit one: Introduction to Arabic Language
This learning guide is developed to provide you the necessary information regarding the
following content coverage and topics:-
 The 28 Arabic Alphabet Letters;
 Arabic as an International Language; and
 Identification of Linguistic Resources.
This guide will also assist you to attain the learning outcome stated in the cover page.
Specifically, upon completion of this learning guide, you will be able to:-
 state Arabic letters with examples ;
 recognize the importance of Arabic language; and
 Identifying the linguistic resources.

1.1 Introduction to Arabic Alphabet Letters
Arabic language is an official language for about eighteen countries in the Arabian Peninsula; the
northern part of Africa and the Middle East. Arabic has between 250-400 million speakers
worldwide. It is among the top ten widely spoken languages in the world. Arabic language is
grouped among the Semitic family languages with Hebrew, Syriac, Aramaic and Ethiopian
languages such as Amharic, Tigrigna, and others. Arabic language is among the six official
languages of the United Nations. The Arabic language has 28 letters. Such letters have long and
short vowels. The letters are written from right to left in sentence construction.

The following table shows Arabic letter naming with Amharic and English transliteration. This reveals
the English letters refer to the Arabic phones (Sound). All the Arabic words start from right to left in
the coming in the module discussions.

Notice: The letter (duad), (gayn), (Ain), (tha), (qaf), (Tua) need voice guide because they are not
found in both Amharic and English languages and pronunciation mistakes could lead to change of
meanings.

1.2 Arabic as an International Language


Arabic language is one of the international languages in the world. It is crucial to serve as
communication tool in the world of work. It is also important to interact with people and build
relationships among users of the language.

People working in a domestic and care giving setting need to communicate in Arabic language
for certain purposes as listed below:-
 Greetings and introductions;
 Asking for directions, prices of products and services;
 Communicating and clarifying simple instructions;
 Communicating completion of domestic tasks, care giving tasks and seeking feedback on
performance;
 Communicating during emergencies and work-related concerns; and
 Convey apologies and expressions.

1.3 Identification of Linguistic Resources


Citizens working in household activities can access different linguistic resources to improve their
communication skills from the following references.
 Dictionary,
 Teaching videos and audios,
 Pictures,
 Internet sources etc.

2.1 Introducing Oneself
It is very crucial for domestic workers to know some important expressions, phrases and
vocabularies which will enable you perform basic Arabic communication. Here below are some
of the basic Arabic expressions and vocabularies of self-introduction, greeting, farewell and
telephoning related to household activities.
Self-introduction

During workers arrival, you can use the following expressions when you meet with your
employer.
A. (Aselamualaykum) /አሰላሙዐለይኩም / ‫السالم عليكم‬
May peace be upon you /ሰላም ባንቺ ላይ ይሁን
B. Wealaykum selam /ወዐለይኩም አሰላም ‫ وعليكم‬/ ‫السالم‬
May peace be upon you, too /ሰላም ባንተም ላይ ይሁን
A. Masmuk (Shusmak)? /መስሙኪ/ሹስመክ?/ ‫ما اسمك (شواسمك)؟‬
