GERUND AND INFINITIVE

I. FUNCTIONS OF GERUND (Chöùc naêng cuûa Gerund):


1. Subject for a verb : (Laøm chuû ngöõ cho ñoäng töø ) .
EX: Swimming is good for your health.
Smoking is not good for your health.
2. Object for some verbs (Laøm taân ngöõ cho moät soá ñoäng töø) :
admit, advise, anticipate, appreciate, avoid, complete, consider, delay, deny, discuss, dislike, enjoy,
finish, can’t help, can’t bear, can’t stand, keep, mention, mind, miss, postpone, practice, quit, recall,
recommend, resent, suggest, hate, love, like, start, begin, forget, remember, stop, regret, continue,
acknowledge, endure(chòu ñöïng, cam chòu), imagine, justify, resist(khaùng cöï, choáng laïi), feel like,
forgive, risk, tolerate.
* Coâng thöùc: S + V+ GERUND (V-ING) + O.
Ex: I like playing football. She admited stealing a bike. Nam can’t stand living alone.

5. Moät soá ñoäng töø theo sau coù theå duøng Gerund or To Infinitive ñe àu khoâng thay
ñoåi nghóa:
begin, start, hate, prefer, continue, like, intend, attempt.
EX: I hate to see you = I hate seeing you.
6. Moät soá ñoäng töø theo sau duøng Gerund nghóa khaùc duøng To infinitive nghóa
khaùc: stop , remember, forget, regret, try.
a. Stop + to Vo: döøng vieäc naøy ñeå laøm vieäc khaùc.
Stop + Ving : döøng haún vieäc ñang laøm
EX: My father stopped to help me with the housework.
My father stopped smoking 3 years ago.
b. Remember + to Vo: Nhôù ñeå laøm ñieàu gì nhö laø moät boån phaän, traùch nhieäm.
Rember + Ving: Nhôù laø ñaõ coù laøm gì trong quaù khöù.
EX: We always remember to turn off the lights before going out.
I remember meeting you somewhere already.
c. Forget + to Vo : queân khoâng laøm vieäc gì.
Forget + Ving : queân laø ñaõ coù laøm vieäc gì. ñoù.
Ex: Oh, I forgot to send your letter. I am sorry.
I forget lending you my dictionary yesterday.
d. Regret + to Vo: Laáy laøm tieác ñeå thoâng baùo cho ai moät tin khoâng vui,khoâng may.

Regret + Ving:Hoái tieác vì ñaõ laøm gì ñoù trong quaù khöù.
EX: I regret to tell you that you have failed the exams.
I regret lending him some money. He will never pay me back.
e. Try + to Vo : Coá gaéng laøm vieäc gì.
Try + Ving: thöû
EX: I try to study hard to pass the exams.
He tried eating the food I cooked. It was terrible.

7. Sau caùc ñoäng töø allow, advise, forbid, permit, recommend duøng ñöôïc Gerund khi
khoâng coù tuùc töø.
S + allow, advise, forbid, permit, recommend + O + TOVo
S + allow, advise, forbid, permit, recommend + VING
EX: Sorry, we don’t allow smoking in this room.
I wouldn’t advise taking the car.

II. INFINITIVE WITH TO:


1. Laøm chuû ngöõ:
Eg: To love is to give.
To find my house is easy.
To save money now is necessary.
2. Boå ngöõ cuûa ñoäng töø:
Eg: Our duty is to study harder.
3. Laøm taân ngöõ cho moät soá ñoäng töø.(Theo sau moät soá ñoäng töø quy ñònh)
afford, agree, appear, attempt, arrange, ask, beg, care, claim, decide, demand, expect, fail, hesitate,
hope, learn, manage, need, offer, plan, prepare, pretend, promise, refuse, seem, struggle, threaten,
volunteer, wait, want, wish.
* Coâng thöùc: S + V quy ñònh + to Vo ...
EX: I agreed to help him. He threatened to call the police.
4. Verbs followed by a pro(noun) + an infinitive:
advise, allow, ask, arrange, beg, cause, challenge, convince, dare, encourage, expect, forbid, force,
hire, invite, need, order, permit, persuade, remind, require, tell, urge, want, warn, teach, instruct (daïy,
höôùng daãn, thoâng baùo), get, would like, would prefer.
* Coâng thöùc: S + V quy ñònh + O + to Vo ...
EX: I advised me to study hard. He allowed his son to go out .
5. Duøng laøm taân ngöõ cuûa tính töø:
unable, afraid, amused, annoyed(laøm böïc mình,choïc töùc), anxious, astonished(laøm ngaïc nhieân),
certain, delighted, determined(xaùc ñònh), eager, easy, good, glad, grateful, happy, hard,
fortunate(may maén, ñem laïi vaän may), pleased, prepared, ready, safe, surprised, wonderful, worry...
Eg: I’m glad to see you again.
We are unable to solve the problem.
6. Chæ muïc ñích:
EX: We study hard to pass the exam.
We go to school to widen our knowledge.

III. INFINITIVE WITHOUT TO:


Ñoäng töø nguyeân maãu khoâng TO ñöôïc söû duïng trong caùc tröôøng hôïp sau:
1. Sau caùc ñoäng töø khieám khuyeát: can, may,must, will, shall, could, should, might,
ought to, would...
Eg: He can speak 3 languages.
2. Sau caùc ñoäng töø chæ giaùc quan nhö: feel, hear, see, watch, let, percieve =
notice(nhaän thaáy), mark (ñeå yù thaáy), observe (chuù yù thaáy), beheld (troâng thaáy),
hard at (laéng nghe) ...
Eg: I saw him unlock the door.
He made me study hard. (caâu chuû ñoäng)
She let the ball fall onto the floor.
* Feel, hear, see, watch thöôøng ñöôïc theâo sau bôûi V-ING khi ñeà caäp ñeán söï
tieáp dieãn cuûa haønh ñoäng.
Eg: I hear someone knocking at the front door.
I saw the man walking down the street.
3. Sau caùc ñoäng töø nhö: had better, would rather, have to, used to.
Eg: We would rather wait till tomorrow.
You had better put your money in the bank.

4. NEED (caàn) , NEEDN’T (khoâng caàn thieát)
Sngöôøi + need + toVo
S vaät + need + VING/ TO BE VED/ V3
S + NEEDN”T + Vo
EX: Mai needs to buy some salt and sugar. This car needs repairing/ to be repaired.
She needn’t walk to work, she has a bike.
5. Sau caùc ñoäng töø nhö: make, help, let:
a. Caáu truùc vôùi make:
S+ MAKE/MADE + O + Vo . (Caâu chuû ñoäng)
S + BE + MADE + TO Vo + BY O. (Caâu bò ñoäng)
EX: What makes you laugh? She made me cry. I was made to study hard. She is
made to be sad.
b. Caáu truùc vôùi HELP: S + HELP + O + Vo
EX: Please help me carry this heavy bag.
C. Caáu truùc vôùi LET:
S + LET + O + Vo (Chuû ñoäng)
S + BE + LET + Vo (Bò ñoäng)
LET’S + Vo …(Chuùng ta haõy…)
EX: We let him go. He lets me sit down. Let’s go out for a walk.
