Scientific research has proven that while we sleep, our brain continues to subconsciously find the
solutions to the problems that we have not been able to work out while awake. Therefore, it is no surprise
that some major scientific discoveries have been made in dreams.
Back in the 19th century, the famous chemist Dmitri Mendeleev was spending most of his time and
effort to find a logical way to organize the chemical elements but had no success. One day in 1986, he
tried to write each element’s name on a set of cards and moved them around for hours to find a pattern
until he fell asleep at his desk. Then, after he had woken up, he realised that he found it. He later wrote:
“In a dream I saw a table where all the elements fell into place as required. Awakening, I immediately wrote
it down on a piece of paper.” Today, this table is known as the periodic table.
In a similar manner, while Alfred Russel Wallace was traveling around the world to understand the
differences that gradually appeared between members of the same species after they were separated by
geographical barriers for generations, he had a severe tropical fever which resulted in an extreme dream
filled with hallucinations. When the fever had gone days later, he found that the theory of evolution by
natural selection had come to him.
Meanwhile, according to the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who came up with thousands of
mathematical ideas that still influence modern mathematics, the Hindu goddess Namagiri would
sometimes appear in his dreams, showing him mathematical proofs that he would put down when he
awoke. In one of his dreams, he described seeing elliptic integrals being written on a board. “They stuck
to my mind. As soon as I woke up, I committed them to writing.”

Industry has been promoting hydrogen as a reliable, next-generation fuel to power cars, heat homes
and generate electricity. But a new study on the climate effects of this chemical substance has cast doubt on
its role in tackling the greenhouse gas emissions that are the driver of global warming and climate change.
The main problem? Most hydrogen used today is “blue”, which means it is extracted from natural
gas in a process that requires a lot of energy and emits vast amounts of carbon dioxide. Securing natural gas
from underground wells also releases methane, another major contributor to the greenhouse effect. And
while the natural gas industry has proposed capturing that carbon dioxide – creating what it calls emissions-
free blue hydrogen – even this fuel still emits more across its entire supply chain than simply burning natural
gas.
“To call it a zero-emissions fuel is totally wrong,” said Robert W. Howarth, the lead author of the study.
To arrive at their conclusion, Dr. Howarth and his partners calculated the amount of greenhouse gases emitted
during the production of blue hydrogen, including the amount of carbon dioxide and methane that leaks
from wells and from other equipment while natural gas is pumped up from the ground. The researchers also
took into account the natural gas required to power the carbon capture technology. In all, they found that
the greenhouse gas footprint of blue hydrogen was more than 20 percent greater than burning natural gas
or coal for heat.
These findings can change what we think about hydrogen. In recent years, the natural gas industry
has been touting hydrogen as a new and promising fuel source, announcing in campaigns aimed at the
public that it can be one of the best climate solutions. However, while many scientists agree that hydrogen
could play a significant role in energy storage or powering certain types of transportation such as aircraft or
long-haul trucks, there is an emerging agreement that a wider hydrogen economy that relies on natural gas
is damaging to the climate.
Jack Brouwer, director of the National Fuel Cell Research Centre at the University of California, said
that we would ultimately need to produce what the industry calls green hydrogen, which is the result of using
renewable energy to power a process called electrolysing – in other words, splitting a water molecule into
hydrogen and oxygen. This, he said, would eliminate greenhouse emissions. “First we use blue, then we make
it all green,” explained Brouwer.

D. can only be produced when the carbon dioxide emitted during the process is captured.

C. Many scientists currently share the viewpoint that a hydrogen economy could only be damaging.
D. Jack Brouwer believes that there should eventually be a switch from blue to green hydrogen.
