Truss element
TRUSS is a straight bar that is designed to take only axial forces; therefore, it
deforms only in its axial direction.

Truss element
A truss structure consists of only two force members. Therefore, every truss element
is in direct tension or compression. Loads are applied only at joints. The joints are
assumed to be frictionless. i.e., pin joints. FEM can easily handle truss problems
whether statically determinate and indeterminate. Also, it can provide joint deflection
and handle temperature changes.

LINK180
• LINK180 is a 3-D spar that is useful in a variety of engineering applications. The
element can be used to model trusses, sagging cables, links, springs, and so on.
• LINK180 is a uniaxial tension-compression element with three degrees of
freedom at each node: translations in the nodal x, y, and z directions. Tension-
only (cable) and compression-only (gap) options are supported
• As in a pin-jointed structure, no bending of the element is considered. Plasticity,
creep, rotation, large deflection, and large strain capabilities are included.

Modeling: two ways
We don’t really need to
Meshing
Keypoint, line Node, element “mesh” a truss model
Just define nodes
directly
Node, element All you need is one
element per “line” in
the truss model

Getting Results From the Element Table ETABLE, Lab, Item, Comp
For line elements (links, beams, etc. ) the Element Table is used to access results data. The Element
Table is different for each element; therefore, we need to look at the help file for LINK180. From Table
180.2 in the Help file, we can see that the stress (Sxx) can be obtained using the item 'LS,1‘, and the
element load (FORCE) using ‘SMISC,1”.
