This paper is divided into four sections- A, B, C and D.
Answer all questions.
Section- A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
Section-B consists of seven questions of two marks each.
Section-C consists of seven questions of three marks each.
Section-D consists of three questions of five marks each.

Internal choices have been provided in one question each in Section B, Section C and
Section D.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets ().

SECTION A- 20 Marks
Question 1

Answer the following questions briefly.

(i) The interspecific interaction which is an evolutionary strategy that relieves the [1]
parasitic parents from the investment of rearing young or building nests for the
young by getting the host to raise their young ones for them.

(ii) Breastfed babies have fewer infections and hospitalizations than formula-fed [1]
(bottle fed) infants. Why?

(ii) A chimpanzee can hold objects by its hand and an elephant by its trunk. Are

flowered plants and 50% white flowered plants. State the reason for the
observation.
(ii) Study the pedigree chart below, showing the inheritance pattern of blood groups

(i) Suggest two techniques which can help in the early detection of bacterial and
viral infections, even before the symptoms appear.
(ii) The symptoms of a disease include internal bleeding, muscular pain, fever,
anaemia and blockage of the intestinal passage. Identify the disease. Comment
on how a healthy person acquires this infection.

eyed and brown-eyed individuals, was decimated by an earthquake. Only a few
brown eyed people remained to form the next generation. What is the term given

(ii) Stanley Miler had put the Oparin-Haldane theory to test in 1953 by creating in
the laboratory, the probable conditions on the primitive earth. In the experiment
simple amino acids were synthesized from a mixture of gases. Name the
component gases in the mixture.

(i) Pollen-pistil interaction is described as the sequence of events from the
moment pollen is deposited on the stigma till the time when the pollen tube
enters the ovule. It is a dynamic process which has checks at several places for
promotion or inhibition of pollen growth. The compatible pollens are able to
absorb water and nutrients from the surface of the stigma. They germinate and
produce pollen tubes.
