Predictive Maintenance and Optimization in

Manufacturing by Using Digital Twin Technology
Introduction
Traditional methods, software and digitalized equipment are commonly utilized through the
lifecycle of industrial products. This generating a large volume of varied data. However,
inefficiency still occur in manufacturing because these valuable data remains disconnected and
difficult to integrate. This literature review will illustrate the impacts of Digital Twin technology,
in particular with respect to the optimization of the production systems in manufacturing.

Overview of Digital Twin Technology

Digital Twin is a digital representation of a physical product, object or system in all its aspects,
encompassing the whole lifecycle of a product or a system (Gaus, 2019). Previous studies
mentioned that implementing digital twin technology offers numerous advantages such as real-
time monitoring, control and data acquisition for decision making in business and in industry
problem solving, increased efficiency and predictive maintenance, prevent risk in physical system
and optimized scheduling. Additionally, Digital Twin applications in various fields including the
fourth industry revolution (industry 4.0), healthcare sector, smart cities from urban planning to
traffic organizing to water resource managing and pollution monitoring, education provide smart
learning environment, and next generation network like 5G or 6G (Mashaly, 2021) & (G. Mylonas,
A. Kalogeras, G. Kalogeras, C. Anagnostopoulos, C. Alexakos and L. Muñoz, 2021).

Impact of Digital Twin on Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0

As the manufacturing process becomes more and more challenges and rapidly changes, it is
difficult to define the arising problem. Moreover, unbalanced production line layout and slow
production line update caused a very low efficiency in factory. In (Kyu Tae Park, Young Wook
Nam, Hyeon Seung Lee, Sung Ju Im, Sang Do Noh,Ji Yeon Son & Hyun Kim, 2019) shown that
deployed digital twin in micro smart factory could receive real-time monitoring of all updates,
monitoring historical data, and gathering all necessary data for decision-making. Their case study
conducted by activating the CMSF in the FaaS system – implementing the digital twin adopted
concept that representing Deajeon MSF factory and using the DMWorks software to simulation of
execution and analyzation the result. As a result, they have archived cost reduction and
performance efficient in manufacturing. According to (Attaran, M., Attaran, S. & Celik, B.G,
2023), the evolved of Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud computing, Artificial intelligence (AI), and
Extended reality (XR) are working together to connect the real system and virtual system. This
cooperation making Digital Twin greatly effected in intelligent manufacturing and Industry 4.0.
Factories can use Digital Twin technology in various areas such as logistics by identify optimum
transportation routes or predicting delivery trajectory (Taofeeq D. Moshood,Gusman
Nawanir,Shahryar Sorooshian,Okfalisa Okfalisa, 2021) and supply chain management by using
real-time data to simulate model on an actual supply chain, so that they can understand supply
chain characteristic, test scenarios, model different nodes, mode flows, policies, uncover
abnormalities and take corrective action, and expose chances for improvement. Also, Digital
Twins supposed to accuracy and make decision for evaluating various hurdles of production line
performance (Jinho Yang,Yoo Ho Son,Donggun Lee,Sang Do Noh, 2022).

Challenges and Gaps in Current Research

Unfortunately, Digital Twin technology is still in the early stage, so there is limit research focus
on theorical concepts and its frameworks that can pre-diagnose issues and enables to detect
collision before they occur. This preemptive detection could notify the system in advance of an
impending failure, allowing for faster responses and reducing downtime (Kyu Tae Park, Young
Wook Nam, Hyeon Seung Lee, Sung Ju Im, Sang Do Noh,Ji Yeon Son & Hyun Kim, 2019) &
(Attaran, M., Attaran, S. & Celik, B.G, 2023).

Conclusion
In conclusion, for the current research concentrated on the potential of digital twin technology to
optimize manufacturing, further studied are needed to explore predictive capabilities, such as pre-
diagnosing potential failures and improving real-time decision making by building a real physical
smart factory system and its ongoing processes implemented through a data connection that allows
converting the physical system into a virtual system while maintaining a high level of
synchronization between them.
