Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded

Now That’s Magic!

A magic trick is a performance of something that seems incredible or impossible, such

as pulling a rabbit from an empty hat or making something disappear.

r
Magicians have performed tricks for 3,000 years. The first recorded magic act was in

pe
Ancient Egypt. Years later, the Romans helped spread magic around the world. Until
the 19th century, performers usually performed tricks on the street. Then, circus

Pa
buildings opened, where animals and magic were popular. A man called Jean Eugène
Robert-Houdin, was interested in magic and read books about doing tricks. However,
he thought the explanations of the tricks were poor, so he took lessons from a local
performer instead. Robert-Houdin practised all the time.

e
pl
In July 1845, Robert-Houdin opened his first magic show in Paris. His magic tricks
seemed much more modern and interesting to people than before. He invented new

m
tricks, but also improved on some older ones, such as the ‘flying trick’. This was first
performed in 1833 and showed a man ‘flying’ on stage. After Robert-Houdin died in
Sa
1871, others wanted to be like him. One of these was PT Selbit. In 1921, he invented a
trick in which a woman seemed to be cut in half before the audience’s eyes.
ns
Alexander Hermann was the first to wear what is now seen as the famous magician
clothes: a tall hat and a suit, while waving a magic wand. In 1905, the best performers
io

first gathered to discuss magic tricks. They called this club the Magic Circle and they
kept it secret so nobody would know how to do their tricks.
