Albania, officially the Republic of Albania, It is a Balkan country in Southeastern


Europe. Its neighbour are Montenegro in the north, Kosovo in the northeast, North
Macedonia in the east and Greece in the south. Albania’s desire to join NATO
started after the collapse of communism in 1990.

Albania first began its process of joining NATO in 1992 by participating in the
Partnership for Peace program. This program enabled former Eastern Bloc
countries to join NATO. In 1994, Albania set NATO membership as a general goal
and began implementing various reforma in areas such as defense, democracy,
and security. During this process, Albania took various steps to modernize its
military, democratize civil-military relations, and comply with NATO's security
standards. In 2008, at the NATO Summit held in Bucharest, Albania and Croatia
were invited to join NATO. Following this invitation, Albania pursued policies in
alignment with other NATO member states to fulfill the requirements of the
integration process. On April 1, 2009, Albania officially joined the alliance as a full
member of NATO. This alliance marked an important milestone for Albania in
bolstering its internal security and supporting peace and stability across the
Balkans.

Some NATO Operations Involving Albania

KFOR Operation in Kosovo

Albania supported the Kosovo Force (KFOR) peacekeeping mission, which began
in 1999. After becoming a NATO member, Albania continue to contribute to the
operation. This mission is a peacekeeping operation aimed at maintaining peace
in Kosovo.

Afghanistan: ISAF and Resolute Support Mission

Albania contributed to both the ISAF and Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan.
ISAF was a mission aimed at ensuring security and stability in Afghanistan, where
Albania collaborated with other NATO allies. When ISAF ended in 2014, Albania
joined the Resolute Support Mission, providing training and support to Afghan
security forces.

Iraq Training Mission

Similarly, Albania contributed to NATO’s training mission in Iraq. The purpose of


this mission was to support the training and capacity-building processes of Iraqi
security forces. Albania assisted Iraqi security forces in counterterrorism and
maintaining security.

Albania’s overall role in NATO is as follows. Albania’s primary objectives are to


cooperate with its allies, strengthen its defense, and contribute to NATO
operations.
