3 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

INTRODUCTION

It’s twenty years since Just Flight published the first instalment in the legendary Traffic series. Now Traffic Global,
the latest and greatest edition, is ready to populate the virtual skies, make your flight environment ‘as busy as it
gets’ and once again set the bar for AI (Artificial Intelligence) traffic expansions.

Traffic Global has been designed for the latest incarnations of Prepar3D and Flight Simulator X. It features
thousands of individual commercial airline AI aircraft that have been built from the ground up to provide
unprecedented levels of realism and immersion.
Using real-world flight plan data to generate a realistic airport environment, these aircraft can be seen in the air,
landing, taxiing, parking and taking off at airports both large and small around the world.
The included aircraft range from small single-engined private aircraft such as the C152 right up to the Airbus
A380, one of the world’s largest airliners. The whole aviation spectrum is well represented, with a huge selection
of commercial jet airliners, regional jets, regional turboprops, business aircraft and general aviation planes.

5 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

USING TRAFFIC GLOBAL

Overview
Traffic Global only needs to be installed once, as it manages AI traffic for all the flight simulators you wish to use
it in.
The library of AI aircraft – the largest element of the Traffic Global installation – is installed in a single location
and shared by all the of the flight simulators you configure to use Traffic Global. By default, this location is in
Documents\TrafficGlobal, but the installer will give you the option to install to a custom location.
The flight plan database is stored in Excel files and can therefore be adjusted manually, although this is not
recommended in case any changes are made that the Traffic Global app cannot recognise. Also, it is important
not to leave any documents open in other programs when using Traffic Global as it will prevent it from being able
to access them.

Running the Traffic Global software for the first time

When you first run Traffic Global you will be presented with a Setup Wizard to configure the various ini, xml and
cfg required to set up Traffic Global in the supported flight simulator(s) currently installed on your PC.
This screen will show the compatible simulators that it has found on your PC.

No selections are necessary. Click the aircraft icon at the bottom of the screen to progress…
The following screen will display the paths that it has automatically retrieved from your PC’s registry:

6 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Use the folder icon to enable an undetected sim and to manually adjust the path displayed.
Press the green arrow to progress.
This screen will display the progress of the various setup procedures:

7 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

The output log can be used for troubleshooting, if necessary.
This Wizard can be run again after the initial setup via the button in Options.

Types of AI traffic
Traffic Global generates four different types of AI traffic:

Traffic Global Flight Plans

These are real-world flight plans that have been created using a commercial schedules database (the same data
used by popular flight tracking apps).
All flights using the AI system in P3D and FSX are of a circular nature, i.e. the original departure point is always
the final destination of the flight plan.

For example, the flight plan in the image below would be flown as follows:
An EasyJet A320 would depart Edinburgh at 9:45am (all shown departure times are local times) heading for
Berlin. The flight would take approximately two hours and ten minutes. The aircraft would be turned around in
one to two hours and then fly the return leg back to Edinburgh.
This flight plan would then be repeated over the course of the rest of the day.

8 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

My AI Flights
‘My AI Flights’ is where your own custom multi-leg flight plans are listed.

Cargo Traffic
Cargo flights are dynamically generated and will fly multi-leg flights all over the globe.

GA Traffic
Traffic Global includes a dedicated hangar of General Aviation models and will generate traffic in all airports that
can accommodate GA traffic. Aircraft will fly a mixture of circuits, direct flights and multi-leg sightseeing tours.

9 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Schedules tab

The Schedules tab is used to access the following features:

Traffic Global Flight Plans

This button will open and display the database containing the real-world flight plan database.

Highlighting any of the listed flights will populate the box to the right of the flight plan screen. Listed here will be
details such as the aircraft, airline, departure time, departure and arrival airports, distance etc.
To search for a specific flight in the database, press [Ctrl]-[F] to open a search box. Search terms will be applied
across all database fields, so you can search for a particular aircraft, airline, flight number, flight time or any of
the other fields displayed in the Default Database tab.
You can also access other options, such as sorting the database alphabetically, by right-clicking at the top of any
of the database columns.

10 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Edit Selected Flight Plan (Default Database section)
This button will allow you to edit one of the default Traffic Global flight plans. Locate the flight plan you wish to
edit in the database, ensure that it is highlighted and then press the ‘Edit Selected Flight Plan’ button to open the
editor.

The Selected Flight Plan group to the left of the screen contains the original details of the flight plan you have
selected.
Use the drop-down and text input boxes in the Configure New Flight Plan section to make your alterations to the
flight plan.
To aid in looking up the correct ICAO code for the airport you are looking for, you can right-click in the Airport
field and select the Lookup Airport option.

This pop-up window will allow you to search for an airport by name, country or the IATA code. Highlight the
airport you are looking for and press the Insert Airport button to assign it to the flight plan.

11 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

The New Flight Details section displays the details of the new flight you have configured.
Once you have customised the details of the flight plan, you can send it to the AI traffic compiler to check for any
errors that the flight plan will generate. Ensure that you have selected the version of the simulator for which you
are testing the flight plan and then press the Test Compile Flight Plan button to begin the check. The results of
the test are displayed in the output box in the Compile Test section at the bottom of the window.
Common errors include not assigning enough time for the aircraft to complete the flight or appropriate parking
not being available for the selected aircraft at either the departure or arrival point.
Once your changes are complete, ensure you press the Save Flight Plan Changes button to commit the new
flight plan to the database.

My AI Flights
This button will open and display the database containing the custom user flight plans. This database has the
same search and sorting options as the Traffic Global Flight Plans database described above.

Add New Flight Plan

This button will open the Add My AI Flight Plan tab and allow you to create a new flight plan from scratch and
add it to the My AI Flights database.
Use the drop-down and text boxes in the Flight Plan Details section to insert the details of your flight plan. The
following fields are available:
Aircraft – this box will list all the aircraft currently in the Traffic Global fleet.
Airline – this box lists all the liveries available for the selected aircraft.
Flight No: – for assigning a flight number to your flight.
Tail Number – for assigning a tail number to your flight. Use the cog icon to automatically generate an
appropriate tail number for the airline you have selected.
Flight Rules – for selecting whether the flight should follow IFR or VFR rules. Commercial airline flights should
always be IFR.

12 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Traffic Density &: – this number relates to the AI Traffic Density slider in the host simulator’s traffic options. For
example, if 25% is selected, the flight will appear when the simulator’s traffic slider is set to at least 25%. If 99%
is selected, the flight will not appear until the traffic density slider is set to 99%.
Repeat – the available options are as follows: ONE_HOUR, TWO_HOURS, FOUR_HOURS, SIX_HOURS, EIGHT_
HOURS, TWELVE_HOURS.

These options will repeat the flight plan every X hours as appropriate. Please note the following limitations with
these selections:
If the TWO_HOURS option is selected, the start time for the flight will need to be within 00:00 and 01:59; if the
FOUR_HOURS option is selected, between 00:00 and 03:59 and so on.
ONE_DAY – this option will repeat the flight once a day, every day, at the time you have set.
ONE_WEEK – this option will only fly the flight plan you have created on the particular days you have specified.
Days – this control becomes enabled if you have selected the ONE_WEEK option above. Tick the boxes of the
days of the week on which you wish the aircraft to fly.
Use the Legs section to first assign your departure details, and then add the details of any subsequent legs. You
will need a minimum of one leg for the flight to be valid, and you can have a maximum of seven different legs to
the flight plan. As all flight plans for P3D and FSX are circular (i.e. A to B, then back to A), the final destination will
always be your departure point and this is inserted automatically by the editor.

Edit Selected Flight Plan (My AI Flights section)

This button opens the editor for existing flight plans in the My AI Flights database.
This section operates in the same way as the editor for the default flight plans (as detailed earlier), with the
addition of extra fields for editing the individual flight plan legs.

13 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

A.I. Fleet tab

The A.I. Fleet tab is used to access the following buttons:

Aircraft Explorer
The Aircraft Explorer can be used to browse the Traffic Global fleet, view the aircraft parameters used by Traffic
Global when compiling flight plans and also to visually inspect the aircraft livery textures.

14 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Edit AI Fleet Parameters
This editor is used to edit the parameters for each aircraft that the compiler uses when generating the traffic file
for the simulator.

To make changes, click the field you wish to modify and the text input window will activate.
To aid searching for a particular aircraft, a search option can be activated by pressing [Ctrl]-[F].
Once you have completed your changes, commit them to the database by pressing the Save Changes button at
the bottom of the window.

15 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Add Livery

This section does not describe the techniques and processes required to create your own liveries. An excellent
guide to this can be found on fsxinsider.com.
The layered .psd paint kits for the Traffic Global aircraft can be downloaded from the Traffic Global Support page.
The rest of these instructions assume that you have already created your repaint and a texture.x folder for it in
the correct location.

Setting up your livery:

1. Use this drop-down menu to select the aircraft for which you are setting up this livery.
2. This box will display all the livery folders inside your selected aircraft’s folder (i.e. folders prefixed with
‘Texture’). Select the folder containing the livery you have created.
3. Once you have selected your livery folder, press this button to confirm your selection and populate the
rest of the tool.
4. Use the Select Carrier drop-down menu to select the carrier corresponding to the livery you have created.
This will then display the Callsign and Parking code used by this airline.
5. If the aircraft you are repainting has more than one model folder (e.g. winglet and non-winglet versions),
this control will be enabled and you will need to select the model that corresponds to your livery.
6. Use the Variant Name and Variant Description fields to assign the name and description of your livery
used by the simulator.

16 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

7. The fields in the Advanced Options section cover various fields used in the aircraft.cfg that can be
amended, but we suggest only doing so if you are an advanced user with an understanding of the effects
of changing them.
8. This will display the aircraft.cfg that will be created using the fields you have completed in the Add Livery
tool.
9. Press the ‘Add Livery To Aircraft’ button to confirm your selections and write the changes to the
aircraft.cfg.
An aircraft.inf file will be created inside your livery folder and the information from the .inf will be added to the
aircraft.cfg via an external livery tool that will be launched by Traffic Global. At this point an approval window will
appear, asking you to grant permission for this tool to run. Press OK and the operation will proceed.
If not already present, the tool will create a texture.cfg and thumbnail.jpg in your livery folder.
You should now be able to assign your repaint to a flight plan via the Edit/Create Flight Plan options.

Import New Aircraft

Traffic Global allows you to import third party aircraft into the Traffic Global fleet.
Note: Importing payware which uses models not optimised for AI use is not recommended, due to the potential
frame rate loss.
Each livery must be imported individually so that the data required by the Traffic Global traffic compile can be
configured.

17 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Select Imported Aircraft Type
Either button will open a folder dialog window which will allow you to browse to the folder of the aircraft that you
wish to import. This folder must be the one that contains the aircraft.cfg file.
Flyable Aircraft – this option is for importing aircraft which are currently available in the simulator as flyable
aircraft.
Non-flyable A.I. Aircraft – this option is for importing an aircraft that is already set up as an AI aircraft.

Select livery
This will display a list of all the liveries found in the selected aircraft folder. Click on the livery you wish to import
to select it.

Configure livery details

This section contains the data which needs to be configured to successfully import an aircraft into Traffic Global.
Title – displays the title from the aircraft.cfg of the selected livery.
Select Airline – this drop-down box is used to select the airline name from the Traffic Global carrier database.
When a selection is made, the three fields below will be populated based on the selection.
Note: If you cannot locate the name of the airline you wish to designate, use the Modify/Add Airline Details
feature.
Carrier Code – displays the code of the airline you have selected in the above drop-down box.
Callsign – displays the callsign for the selected airline.
Name – displays the name of the selected airline.
Select Aircraft Code – use this drop-down box to select the IATA code for the aircraft type you are adding. If
you cannot locate the appropriate code for your aircraft, the code can be entered manually into the box to the
right of the drop-down menu and will override the drop-down selection if a three-digit code is entered. If you are
not familiar with the code of the aircraft you are adding, most can be found on The Airline Codes Web Site.
Half wing span value (m) – this is the wing span value converted from the value in the aircraft.cfg of the aircraft
you are importing.
Parking radius – the parking space size that will be used for the aircraft being imported.

Create new A.I. aircraft

New aircraft title in aircraft.cfg – if you are importing a flyable aircraft, this box displays the new title that will be
used when creating a new fltsim.x entry in the aircraft.cfg. It can be edited by the user.
If you are importing a non-flyable AI model, this field will be disabled.
Once you have finished configuring the aircraft livery you are importing, press the Confirm button to complete the
operation.

18 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Modify/Add Airline Details
This button will open the Modify/Add Carrier pop-up and allow you to edit the name, airline code, ICAO, callsign
and registered country for any of the entries in the Traffic Global airline database.

It also allows you to create your own fictional carrier or add one which is not currently in the database.

19 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Compile Traffic tab
This tab will lead you to the Compile Traffic Database section.

To compile our flight databases and transfer them to the selected simulator, we will be using the options down
the left-hand side of the window.

Database selection
Use this window to select whether you wish to compile the My AI Flights and/or Traffic Global Flight Plan
databases.

Compile database for sim

Select the simulator for which you wish to compile the traffic database. Only one selection can be made at a
time.

20 Traffic Global – Operations Manual

Cargo Traffic
Include Cargo Traffic – check or uncheck the Include Cargo Traffic box depending on whether you wish to
include cargo flights in the compile.
Regenerate Schedules – uncheck this box if you do not wish to regenerate the cargo schedules. It is
recommended that you keep this checked so that any scenery changes are taken account of in the compile.
Regenerate Aircraft List – uncheck this option if you do not need the compiler to rescan your cargo aircraft
details.

GA Traffic
Include GA Traffic – check or uncheck this option depending on whether you wish to include GA flights in the
compile.
Regenerate GA Aircraft List – uncheck this option if you do not need the compiler to rescan your GA aircraft
details.

Options
Use Excludes List – check or uncheck this option depending on whether you wish to use the Airliner Exclusions
list to remove listed airlines from the compile.
Re-scan airport data – for Traffic Global to recognise the modified airport layouts in third party scenery, the
program builds a database of all the airports being used by the simulator. This option determines whether Traffic
Global rebuilds this database for the selected simulator to take any scenery changes you may have made
(adding custom airports etc). This step can be the longest part of the compile, so if you are sure that no changes
have been made to the airport scenery in your simulator, you can untick this option and use the previously
generated version.
Include Alternate Liveries – some airlines in the Traffic Global fleet have more than one version of an airline’s
livery. This option determines whether the sim selects one of the other available liveries when compiling or sticks
to the default livery option.
Error Correction – the database of flights included with Traffic Global contains lots of flights that can be directly
matched with liveries and aircraft in the traffic fleet. However, also included in the database are flight plans that
do not have a direct match in the fleet and therefore various options are available for applying error checking and
livery/aircraft substitution to increase the amount of flight plans being generated.

The positions on the slider correspond to the following settings:

0
• Minimal error corrections.
• Unmatched aircraft codes will be substituted for the same aircraft type from the same carrier.

1
• Unmatched aircraft codes will be substituted for the same aircraft type from the same carrier.
• Missing aircraft will be replaced with a similar type from the same carrier.

FAQS

Q: Why are lots of compiling errors appearing in the compiling logs?

A: Messages from the compiler are very common and should not be treated as errors with the Traffic Global
program. Many default airports in P3D and FSX do not have enough parking spaces to accommodate real-world
levels of AI traffic so you may see multiple indications of free parking spaces not being available if you haven’t
replaced the airport with custom scenery or enhanced the airport with modified parking spaces.

Q: Parking spaces at the airports are not laid out the same as the real-world layouts. Some gates are
missing. What’s the reason?
A: Default P3D and FSX airports usually have a very tight and narrow layout. It is not always possible to place
parking stands at their real-world positions. Using add-on sceneries can greatly improve this situation.

Q: Why are aircraft not parking at their correct locations? For example, airline XY is parking at a gate where
it would not be parking in the real world.
A: P3D and FSX allow you to assign certain gates to certain airlines and vice versa. We have modified 50
international airports with gate assignments that are as accurate as possible. However, in the event of an airport
getting overloaded with traffic, Traffic Global will assign gates according to free spaces, so newly arriving aircraft
might park in any free parking area. You can adjust gate assignments according to your own preferences using tools
such as AFX or the free Aircraft Design Editor tool. You’ll find more information about these on FS-related websites.

Q: I have installed some new airport scenery but Traffic Global doesn’t appear to be utilising the new airport
layouts and parking. Why is this?
A: If you have installed new scenery you will need to recompile the traffic database with the Re-Scan Airport Data
box selected so Traffic Global can incorporate the new airport features.

Q: I sometimes see lots of aircraft parking at an airport but none taxiing, taking off or landing. What’s the
reason?
A: When starting a flight at an airport or when rebuilding the scenery database (e.g. after changing the day or time),
P3D/FSX builds a start-up situation of AI traffic at this airport, with all the aircraft parking and the approaching
aircraft some miles out. If you select the relevant ground frequency you will initially hear aircraft asking for
clearances (depending on the size of the airport and current activity) and a few minutes later you’ll see the first
aircraft coming in. When flying to an airport, however, the situation gets constantly rebuilt so you should see and
hear full traffic in the air and on the ground.

Q: I have installed Traffic Global and completed the Setup Wizard, but I am not seeing any AI aircraft traffic in
my simulator.
A: If you have previously installed an older AI traffic program (or airport that features AI traffic) which uses FS2004
format files, FS can only support one of these files and all other third party traffic files will be disabled. Included
in Traffic Global is a feature that will allow you to search your flight sim directory to look for .bgl files that may be
causing this issue, and to provide you with options for temporarily disabling them.
Please follow these steps:
Ensure your simulator isn’t running and then open Traffic Global and go to the Diagnostics section.
In the Legacy BGL Check section, select the simulator you wish to scan.
Press the Begin Scan button (the Deep Scan option will scan more places but will take longer).
The scan will now begin and after a few moments the results will appear and any conflicting .bgl files will be listed in
the ‘Incompatible BGLs’ list.
Use the options below to disable these files.
Restart your flight simulator and you should now see the Traffic Global AI traffic.
