IGCSE PAPER 2 PRACTICE SHEET

Study the sources below and answer the questions:

Source A: The “British Newspaper” Article, 1938

"Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain has returned from Munich, holding the promise of peace in
our time. This agreement with Herr Hitler ensures that Europe avoids the catastrophe of another
war. The British people support the policy of Appeasement, which reflects our deep desire for
stability and prosperity. We must remember that Germany has legitimate grievances regarding the
Treaty of Versailles, and this agreement offers justice without bloodshed. The cost of war is too
great to bear again, and diplomacy remains our best path forward."

Source B: A Speech by Winston Churchill, member of the British Parliament from the
Conservative Party (opposition to Chamberlain), 1938

"I must tell this House that the policy of Appeasement is a grave mistake. The Munich Agreement is
not a victory but a tragedy. By conceding to Hitler's demands, we have shown weakness, not
strength. The dictator’s appetite for power will only grow, and Europe has been plunged further
into danger. Remember, this is not peace – it is only an armistice before a greater conflict. We are
abandoning the Czechoslovak people and betraying the principles of justice and freedom. The
British government must prepare to face the true threat posed by Nazi Germany, rather than
deluding itself with hopes of compromise."
