ARTS
COMPUTER/ DIGITAL ARTS (Introduction)

Technology-based art is essentially computer-generated and/or manipulated Today's

computer artists employ the ever-expanding powers of image manipulation programs and
applications to create their works which can appear in an entire range of media-whether as a
physical output or a virtual experience. Technology has taken over every aspect of life in the 21st
century, and the Creative and visual arts have not been spared. In fact, for the younger generations,
art, as you know is defined by technology – from its creation to its manipulation to its reproduction,
and even to its distribution

Digital Arts describe technological arts, with fluid boundaries offering many possible
interpretations of the terminology.

As such, we now prefer the terms digital art and new media which can be used interchangeably
with some nuances. In other words, while some works rely on digital tools to magnify an already-
existing medium, others use as digital technology as an intrinsic and indissociable component in
the making of the artifact.

ART ELEMENTS IN THE TECHNOLOGY-BASED PRODUCTION

1. Rhythm refers to the movement or the visual flow within a certain piece. It is sometimes also
referred to as tempo or a beat created that invites the eye to enter into the journey of the artist's
soul.

2. Balance in art refers to the use of artistic elements such as line, texture, color, and form in the
creation of artworks in a way that renders visual stability. In general terms, balance refers to the
equilibrium of different elements.

3. Emphasis is a principle of arts that refers to the use of visual elements to draw attention to a
certain area, usually a focal point, in an artwork. Usually, it involves contrasting different elements
against each other.

4. Proportion is the comparison of dimensions or distribution of forms. It is the relationship in

scale between one element and another, or between a whole object and one of its parts.

5. Variety is the compliment to unity and harmony and is needed to create visual interest.
Without unity and harmony, an image is chaotic and —unreadable, without variety it is dull and
uninteresting.

6. Movement is the path our eyes follow when we look at a work of art and is generally very
important to keep a viewer's eyes engaged in the work. Without movement artwork becomes
stagnant.
• The mobile phone that you constantly hold has evolved from a mere communication tool, into a
creative device that allows you to generate original works of art for an entire range of purposes.

PHOTOGRAPHY
A method of picture-making developed in the early 19th century, based on principles of
light, optics, and chemistry.

The word photography comes from Greek words PHOTOS (meaning light) and GRAPHOS (meaning
writing) and means —drawing with light.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
➢ Another means of generating an original image is to capture it first as a digital file. In the
case of today's electronic technology, that would mean recording the image using a digital
camera or a device with a built-in camera, like your mobile phone, android device, or tablet.
HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

o The Pinhole
The Chinese were the first people that we know of to write about the basic idea of the pinhole
camera. About 2,500 years ago (5th Century BC) they wrote about how an image was formed
upside down from a "pinhole" on the opposite wall.

About 2,400 years ago (4th Century BC) the famous Greek philosopher Aristotle talked about a
pinhole image formation in his work. He wondered why "when light shines through a rectangular
peep-hole, it appears circular in the form of a cone?" He did not find an answer to his question and
the problem was not answered until about 1600 years later in the early 1000s AD.

o Camera Obscura
The invention of the camera obscura is attributed to the Iraqi scientist Alhazen and described in
his Book of Optics (1011-1021). English scientists Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke later invented a
portable camera obscura in 1665-1666. In the 1500s many artists, including Michelangelo and
Leonardo da Vinci, used the camera obscura to help them draw pictures.
Basic Tips for Taking Good Photographs
1. Choose a good location an interesting location can sometimes make the difference between a
good and a great photo.

2. Check that the available background is relatively simple and not too cluttered so that the focus
will be on your chosen subject.

3. Natural light in the outdoors or near a window is usually the most flattering or effective for any
kind of subject.

4. Avoid taking shots facing the light, as this would make your subject back-lit and most of the
details would be lost in shadow.

5. If you intend to take a posed shot, position your subject where you want concerning the location,
background, and source of light.

6. If you intend to take a candid shot, position yourself where you can capture the most interesting,
and amusing. touching, or engaging cinder moment or expression.

7. Take a variety of shots-ranging from far shots showing the surroundings, to medium-distance
shots concentrating on the main subject, to tight or close-up shots that focus on details of the
subject. You can then choose from among all these for the best photo or photos.

POINT AND SHOOT

"point-and-shoot" type of digital camera which automatically makes all the adjustments in
lighting, focus, zoom-in, and zoom-out, even removal of "red eye" with the user being given some
leeway for slight adjustments. It offers image enhancement features like adjusting color and
brightness imbalances, as well as sharpening or blurring the image. It may even offer unique
effects like "fish eye" or filters that allow pre-setting of the photo to be taken with a covered tint or a
special texture. Plus, it allows the user to immediately renew the photos taken without waiting for a
complex developing process- and to delete any unsatisfactory images while storing the good ones
for future needs.

DLSR
Digital single reflex (DLSR) camera. This also provides the film-less and instant review
features of a “point-and-shoot” type of digital camera, but gives the photographer much more
artistic freedom and control to select the camera settings to create the desired final image with the
preferred visual effects.
VIDEO GAMES/ DIGITAL PAINTING/ IMAGING VIDEOS

- various interactive games played by electronically manipulating images on a screen use
specialized electronic gaming devices, computers, or mobile devices for entertainment.

promoting brain plasticity

-involve predominately active forms of learning; typically more effective than passive learning.

DIGITAL PAINTING

- a method of creating artwork using a computer

-still makes use of traditional painting mediums such as acrylic paint, oils, ink, and
watercolor, and applies the pigment to traditional surfaces, such as canvas, paper, polyester, etc.

-employs computer software that drives a type of robot device (such as a plotter) or an
office machine (such as a printer) that takes the place of the artist's hand

- A technique using a graphics software program to create an artwork that is totally virtual.
