A LUST PROSPEROUS AREA IN BIÊN HÒA CITY
Trân Thượng Xuyên was a loyal general to the Ming Dynasty in China in the 17th century. However, his
ammy was defeated by the Qing's army and had to escape to Vietnam. His ships arrived in Đà Nẵng in 1679.
Trần Thượng Xuyên asked Nguyễn Lord, whose name was Nguyễn Phúc Tần, to allow his family and amy to
live there and work for Nguyen Lord's government. Nguyễn Phúc Tân accepted and ordered Trân Thượng
Xuyên and his amy to live in Bàn Lân, which is Biên Hòa City today. Gradually, they became a part of
Vietnamese history, and they were called Hoa Kiều or Người Hoa (the Hoa people) thanks to their contribution
to building Nông Nại Đại Phố, which is called Cù Lao Phố today, a bustling commercial centre in almost 100
years in the south of Vietnam.
Cù Lao Phố was naturally an island which was surrounded by the Đông Nai River. At the beginning. few
people lived there, and the area was full of dangerous wild animals. However, the Hoa realised its geographical
advantages and decided to develop it. The river was deep enough to make it possible for big ships to travel
back and forth. As a result, hundreds of big ships from Asian and European countries arrived at Cù Lao Phố
for trading, which made this area develop quickly. Many houses of different architectures, roads and markets
were built by thousands of people from different places in Vietnam and other countries. One of the most
historical buildings on the island was Ông Temple, which was built in 1684. The temple had a unique structure
and became a place of worship of the locals. In 1776, Cù Lao Pho was destroyed by The Tây Sơn army, and
the Hoa had to leave this area.
Today, Cù Lao Phố is simply a residential area. Although it is no longer a busy area in the South of Vietnam,
