TENSES and other VERBS
EXERCISE 1. Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets. Be careful, you might also

Every year thousands of British people sell their homes and move to a sunny
place. We asked Georgina Wilkes from the UK: “Why (1a) do (do) they (1b)
need (need) to try a new way of life in a different country?”; and she said:
After my husband, Dan retired, we went on a holiday to Spain. Everything
was amazing, so Dan (2) wanted (want) there to spend the rest of our lives. At first, I did not like the idea, but
later I liked it. We (3) made (make) the decision to move there because we wanted to live somewhere warmer
than England in the winter.
Now, we are in Spain. We (4) live (live) in Nerja, a town on the Mediterranean coast. We like it here because
the weather is wonderful and the local people are really friendly, but at first, I (5) wasn’t (be) very happy. In
time, I adapted to this new lifestyle, and loved (6) spending (spend) time with people here. Don is a very
sociable person. He (7) didn’t have (have) any problems when we came here because he made a lot of friends,
and he wanted (8) to spend (spend) most of his time with them. Every weekend, parties (9) were organized
(organized) among friends.
Some British people here say they (10) don't prefer (prefer) to learn Spanish, but I don’t think that's a good
idea. When you live in another country, it is better to learn the language. Now, my husband and I are studying
Spanish, and we (11) (can) speak (speak) a little. We (12) practice (practice) a lot because we'd like to become
fluent in Spanish. Then we will really feel part of Spain and Spanish culture.
Of course, I miss my daughter and my grandsons in Britain. We (12) send (send) e-mails to each other very
often, and I am looking forward to seeing them again very soon.

EXERCISE 2. Read the letters from two students to the editor of their school newspaper and fill in the blanks

To the editor:
Last week President Clark (1) talked (talk) about plans for a new fitness center for our college. The president
says that the new center (2) is going to have (have) a beautiful gym, a track for running, an Olympic-size pool,
saunas, a basketball court, exercise machines and weight-lifting equipment. That sounds great. However, this
fitness center (3) is going to cost (cost) a lot of money. Where (4) is/will the money going to come/come
4
from? I think most of the money (5) will come (come) from us, and our tuition (6) will increase/will be
increased (increase). That’s why I (7) am (be) against the plan. With a tuition increase, more students (8) will
work (work) at part-time jobs. This means that we (9) won’t have (have) time to enjoy the fitness center or
even to study. Why (10) is President Clark doing (do) this? She only (11) wants (want) a fitness center because
other schools have them. She says that more students (12) are going to come (come) to our school if we have
a fancy fitness center. However, we’re here for a good education, not to enjoy a modern fitness center.
Sincerely,
Joe Molina

food is very fast. Also, customers need (4) to have (have) delicious food at a cheaper

The following are some flight safety rules. Each passenger is asked to obey them before the plane takes off.
You (1) can take hand luggage with you on the plane, but please don't take more than one piece because
there is very little space in the cabin for extra baggage. There are cupboards above the seats for your hand
luggage, but if your luggage is heavier than 25 kilos, you (2) mustn’t put it there. Please use the space under
your seats.

Please remember: you (3) mustn’t smoke on the plane ─ not even in the toilets. Also, you (4) have to fasten
your seat belt when the plane is landing or taking off. It’s very important. However, you (5) don’t have to
stay in your seat during the whole flight. You can take a walk on the plane if the "fasten your seat belt" sign
is off.

We also have some piece of advice for our passengers. As you know, we serve alcoholic beverages on the

EXERCISE 8. Read the text and fill in each blank with ONE WORD ONLY.
The following are some “student-safety rules” for our beginner students. Each student is asked to obey them
as long as they are here at DBE, METU. One important rule is about attendance. Teachers take attendance
every day, (1) so students have to come to classes regularly. They have the right to be absent for 50 hours in a
term. In other words, they can go on sleeping, go to the cinema (2) or do something else on some school days,
but there is a limit. They can’t be absent for more (3) than 50 hours without a medical report. If they do not
obey this rule, they fail.
The second rule is about being on time on mid-term days. Mid-term dates and times are announced in
advance. On exam days, a student (4) has to be at school on time to take the exam. This rule is also very
important because if they are late, the teachers do not let (5) them in, and they miss the listening section of
the mid-term.
We also have some advice for our students. They sometimes hear from other people that it is impossible for
beginner students to pass the proficiency exam. This is wrong. Our advice is this: our students (6) shouldn’t
listen to these people. Hard work is enough to be successful, and there have always been very successful
beginner students here.
We also have some advice about our Self Access Center (SAC). Our students (7) should go to SAC regularly and
do some exercises. Regular work at SAC is very helpful. The center is full of reference books and dictionaries.
(8) Also, there are experienced teachers there, and they help our students with the difficult questions. This

7
means, our students (9) don’t have to bring their own dictionaries or look for teachers. Everything that they
need is ready for them at the center. Every resource in SAC can (10) be used by our students.

accident, and the driver (4) was injured (injure), too. He couldn't open the door of the car because he
(5) was trapped (trap). The police and firemen (6) were called (call), and the driver (7) was rescued
(rescue) with their special equipment. The girl (8) was taken (take) to hospital while the man was being
checked (check) by the nurses. It was a good thing that nobody was killed. This is a really dangerous
road. Two boys (9) were injured (injure) here last year, but no precaution has been taken. It's still not

8
safe here.

 he never gave up

11
 Kahlo’s paintings were much more personal
 she had the accident
 her right leg was deformed

When Kahlo was six years old, she had a serious disease, polio. (1) Therefore, her right leg was deformed. It
became shorter and thinner than the left one. The illness deeply changed her personality. It made her shy, but
it also made Kahlo her father’s favorite because of their shared experience of living with disability. Kahlo loved
her father a lot because he made her childhood wonderful. He taught her about literature and nature and
encouraged her to do sports to regain her strength after polio. (2) Furthermore, her father was a role model
for her. Her father, Guillermo, suffered from epilepsy after a head trauma as a child. (3) However, he never
gave up, and he became a successful business as a photographer. In 1922, Kahlo was accepted into the
National Preparatory School. She chose to focus on medicine. When she was a student there, she was faced
with her life’s biggest difficulty. She had a terrible accident, and nearly all of her bones were broken. She
recovered, but the pain remained with her for the rest of her life. (4) After she had the accident, she didn’t
think of painting as a career. After the accident, however, she left the study of medicine and devoted herself
to painting. At a young age Kahlo married the already famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera. His work usually
showed the problems of the working class in Mexico. (5) On the other hand, Kahlo’s paintings were much
more personal. She painted many self-portraits. A local critic wrote that it was impossible to separate her life
and work because her paintings were her life story. Kahlo died in 1954. Her life was the subject of a 2002 film
called Frida.
