What’s a stevia ?
u Stevia is a non-nutritive or
zero-calorie sweetener made
of steviol glycosides. These
are compounds extracted
and refined from the leaves
of the Stevia rebaudiana
plant.
u The stevia plant is native to
South America and was first
consumed there over 200
years ago when the
indigenous people used
leaves of the plant to
sweeten beverages or
chewed them for their sweet
taste.

u The leaves possess three main
sweetening constituents
namely stevioside,
rebaudioside A and C
u Besides, some other
glycosides such as
staviolbioside, isostaviol,
labdane-type diterpenes

absorbed intact ,is not
metabolized, so it provides zero
calories.
u 1- Steviol pass through the
upper gastrointestinal tract,
including the stomach and small
intestines, fully intact.
u 2-Once steviol glycosides reach
the large intestine, colonic
bacteria remove all of the
glucose and other sugar units,
leaving only the backbone,
steviol.
u 3-steviol is absorbed into the
body, quickly modified in the
liver, and excreted in the urine
as steviol glucuronide.
