USES OF PAST PERFECT TENSE
1.To show that an action happened before another
one in the past
• I had taken a shower before my mom called me.
2. In Reported Speech
• Our teacher told us that she had been a scientific student.
3. In Conditional Type 3
• If I had woken up early, I wouldn’t have missed the bus.
4. To express a Past Wish/Regret
• My friend wishes he had visited his grandma before she
passed away.
REMEMBER:
• Before/When + (Action 2) past simple, (Action 1) Past Perfect.
=> Before/When I arrived home, my mother had prepared dinner.

• After + (Action 1) Past Perfect, (Action 2) Past Simple

=> After my mom had prepared dinner, I arrived home.

• Action 2 Past Simple (Effect) + because + Action 1 Past Perfect (cause)

=> Sanae was happy because she had got good marks.
