INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this report is to evaluate the
feasibility of a diesel engine power plant for the
Gaziantep region. Gaziantep industry consumes
an average of 5.577.939 MW of energy annually,
which corresponds to 2,12% of Turkey's total
consumption. There is the Ataturk Dam and
various renewable power plants that enable this
energy consumption to be met, but alternative
energy sources are needed due to the proximity
of this region to the Syrian border and potential
war risks. For this reason, the density of crude oil
lines and electricity transmission lines in the
region and the advantages in terms of water
resources reveal that it may be reasonable to
establish a diesel engine power plant in the
region.
Thanks to this facility to be established in the
region, it becomes very advantageous to have an
energy production facility that can be put into the
system immediately when needed. Although the
time for this facility to be established to be
included in the system takes 10 minutes, support
can be provided to surrounding provinces
depending on the capacity of the plant. The site
where the facility is planned consists of low-fertile
soil and is close to the roads and Gaziantep
4
industry. It is also 50 km away from the nearby
crude oil pipeline.
Considering all these advantages, the
suitability of this project to be established in the
Gaziantep region is understood.
DIESEL ENGINES
Diesel engine power plants are a type of
power generation system that use diesel engines
to produce electricity. These engines work by
burning diesel fuel in a combustion chamber to
drive pistons, which in turn rotate a crankshaft,
generating mechanical energy. This mechanical
energy is then converted into electrical energy
through an alternator or generator.
Diesel engine power plants have some
advantages and disadvantages. To briefly
summarize the advantages of diesel engine
power plants; continuous operation over long
periods, quick start up, flexibility, diesel fuel is
widely available globally. Besides these
advantages, it also has the following
disadvantages: high fuel costs, pollution,
maintenance requirements, noise, and vibration.
The main reasons for choosing diesel engine
power plants over renewable methods are:
5
-They provide a reliable source of electricity
in remote areas where grid connection is not
feasible.
-Diesel engine power plants serve as backup
power sources for critical facilities such as
hospitals, data centres, and telecommunications
infrastructure.
-Diesel engine power plants can be used to
meet peak electricity demand during periods of
high consumption.
-They are often deployed as temporary power
solutions for construction sites, events, and
disaster relief efforts.
SITE SELECTION
The criteria we use when choosing the region
where the diesel engine power plant will be built,
Proximity to the region with high energy
consumption, accessibility to diesel fuel,
6
proximity to water resources, proximity to energy
transmission lines.
-Surrounding areas with high energy
consumption: Gaziantep OSB (5 km)
Gaziantep Şehitkamil OSB (8 km), Gaziantep
centrum (15 km).
-Nearby station: BOTAŞ Sarıl station (30 km),
BOTAŞ PS 4B pump station (33 km).
-Water source: small stream (1 km), Fırat
river (30 km).
-Transmission lines: TEİAŞ Gaziantep 1. and 5.
lines.
Since the selected site is close to the required
locations, it is suitable to build a diesel engine
power plant in this area. The only negative
feature is that the selected area is approximately
150-200 meters high, but the problems that may
arise due to this can be solved with the necessary
field arrangements.

POWER PLANT
As seen in the figures,
the selected area has
suitable conditions for
opening a diesel engine
power plant. The size of
the selected area is 4.62
8
km2, but it is not
necessary to use the
entire area. Since this
land is unsuitable for
agriculture, some of the
area can be used for solar
panels and for the
expansion of the power
plant.
TECHNOLOGY SELECTION
When choosing the diesel engine we will use,
we chose the mtu 20V4000 DS3250 engine(x6),
which uses the latest technology, has reduced
harm to the environment and has high efficiency.
9
The features of this product are shown in the
figures below:
10
11
12
As seen in the diagram, diesel engine power
plants consist of more than one component. The
selection of these components is decided to
ensure their compatibility with diesel engines and
each other. In addition, there must be 6 of the
mtu 20V4000 DS3250 diesel engines we have
chosen because some of them will be used full
time, and some will be used in case of
emergency. We do not expect the power plant to
always operate at full capacity. Moreover, the
daily safe operating time of mtu 20V4000
DS3250 diesel engines is 0,85 of a day. In this
condition, daily fuel consumption:
13
223*24*4*0,85= 18196,8 Galon per day. Or
845*24*4*0,85= 68952 Liter per day. Total
energy production in daily: 3250*0,8*4*24*0,85=
212160 kW per day.
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES
We may encounter various problems from the
construction to the operational processes of the
Koyak hill diesel engine power plant project. It is
necessary to find out what these problems are
and produce solutions. If we need to proceed step
by step, our first problem will be the supply
process of diesel engines. In this supply process,
the engines must enter the country from Hatay
port via ships from the factory where the engines
are produced, and then their logistics must be
provided to the power plant region via special
trucks. The construction of the facility in the
power plant must be completed by utilizing the
necessary engineering solutions. After the
construction of the power plant is completed,
connections to fuel supply and transmission lines
must be provided. Two methods can be used to
ensure fuel supply. First, the route already in the
region can be used with fuel tankers, but in this
case, the region will be at risk. Another method is
to install a direct pipeline to BOTAŞ station. In this
way, unnecessary and risky traffic is reduced.
Another issue is that the region is a bit high.
Underground fuel tanks can be used to turn the
height of the area into an advantage. Apart from
14
this, since fuel prices are expensive, the
electricity produced by using solar panels on the
remaining parts of the land used can be both
greener and more affordable. Finally, even if the
source of water to be used for cooling is not in
sufficient quantities, the system can be made
more environmentally friendly and useful by
using cooling tanks.
COST ESTIMATION
Capital
cost
Annual power plant
operating cost
After the calculations and price analysis, the
construction cost of the facility is 5.551.600€.
15
The amount of fuel (diesel#2 HVO) used by
the power plant daily is 68952 Liters.
The daily amount of electricity produced by
the power plant is 212160 kW.
The cost of our fuel is 37.98 ₺/L.
According to this calculation, our daily fuel
expense is 2.656.776.96₺ (78.140,5€), in line
with the information given above.
The purpose of our project is to meet some of
the electricity needs of the Gaziantep industrial
zone in case of any emergency. As a result of our
research, the state's industrial electricity
purchase price is 6.82 ₺/kWh.
According to this pricing, the total sales price
of the electricity we produce corresponds to
1.446.931,2₺ (42.556,8€). This value was found
based on the government’s electricity sales price
of the facility. For the facility to make a profit, the
government must charge twice the electricity
purchase price or more(>12,5₺/kWh). In this
case, the plant does not make commercial sense.
As a result of our research, diesel engine power
plants are not suitable for use in our country due
to high oil prices and there are not many
examples. As the closest example, Manisa diesel
engine power plant has switched to natural gas
power plant as of 2021.
To make the facility profitable:
16
In addition to the facility, the crude oil
purchased from BOTAŞ must be processed within
the facility to obtain and use the necessary fuel.
Additionally, a gas turbine should be added to the
facility and the heated water should be used in
this turbine to provide additional energy
production. In this way, it can be planned to
increase the profit rate.
CONCLUSION
In this feasibility report we prepared, we
worked on establishing a diesel engine power
plant on Koyak Hill, around Bedirköy, Gaziantep.
The reason why we chose this region is due to
potential war risks and a large industrial capacity.
In this study, we chose the mtu 20V4000 DS3250
model as a diesel engine. There will be 6 pieces
of this model (2 spares). The reason we chose
this model is that it uses up-to-date technologies,
low-emission fuel (diesel #2 HVO) and high
efficiency (PF:0.8). Our cost during the
construction phase of the facility is 5.551.600€
and the annual operating cost of the facility is
140.100€. As a result of all these calculations, it
is not reasonable to establish the facility to make
a profit outside of an emergency. The reason why
17
it makes sense in an extraordinary situation is
that it is possible to quickly transfer the produced
energy to the grid. In this way, some of the
energy needs of the industry can be met
temporarily.
