STANCE & SPLITS
1. 3 Point Stance (Post Foot = Inside Foot / Kick Foot = Outside Foot)

A. Feet = Slightly past shoulder width – Comfortable spread. Toes slightly open –
Weight on in-steps. Stagger OG: Kick toe to mid-point of post foot. Stagger OT:
Kick toes to heel of post foot or slightly deeper. Heels slightly off ground. Balance
weight through in-steps to crotch – Must be able to step in any direction. Align
square to LOS – straight downfield.

B. Power Producing Angles = ‘Z’ in the knee by bending in the hips, knees, and
ankles. Knees just over toes.

C. Arm & Hand = Kick hand extends down so pinky finger is aligned with big toe of
kick foot. All 5 fingers on the ground with no more than 20% weight on down hand.
Off wrist / forearm rests on top of post thighboard.

D. Shoulders / Back / Butt = Shoulders are square to LOS. Back is straight (no
hump) on a slight incline. Head is up – See the defense through eyebrows.

E. Important = We must be balanced in our stance. We cannot tip run or pass.

2. 2 Point Stance
A. Same mentality as the 3 Point Stance only that the kick hand is placed on top of
thighboard. Again, we must be balanced and square and can’t tip run or pass
with an extended stagger.

B. When do you use a 2 Point Stance: (subject to change)

1. OT’s to open end (no adjacent TE next to you)
2. All 2nd & 7+
3. All 3rd & 2+
4. 2 Minute and Gun formations

C. **Note – OT’s are in charge of telling OG’s when to use 2 Point stance
(“We’re Up” on way to LOS).

D. Splits Vertical
1. ‘Off’ – Eyes through beltline of Center (our normal alignment).
2. ‘On’ – Down hand on toe of Center.
3. ‘Crowd’ take all the ball with off hand (Goal Line / Short Yardage).

E. Splits Lateral
1. ‘Normal’ – 18 inches (1½ feet)
2. ‘Tite’ – 1 foot (Goal Line / Short Yardage)
3. ‘Wide’ – 2 to 2½ feet (Game Plan)

OL - 8
STANCE & SPLITS
3. Center Stance & Snap
A. Stance = Feet aligned parallel – Slightly wider than shoulders. Knees out over feet
(open crotch). Toes straight or slightly open. Back is flat. Head and eyes are up.

B. The Ball & Grip = Ball slightly over right eye – Extend to create neutral zone
(create separation of DL). Laces are up with thumb across top of laces (grip top 1/3
of ball).

C. The Snap =
1. Pump the ball up (not back). Think ‘start the lawnmower’.
2. Keep wrist locked – There will be a natural ¼ turn.
3. Snap forearm should ‘brush’ thighboard.
4. Fill the QB’s top hand.
5. Snap and step at the same time.

4. Run Blocking – Chest over Knee, Knee over Toe

A. Leverage = 2 types: Pad under Pad, Hands Inside (next page)

B. Fit Position / Alignment (next page)

C. Take Off – Come off the ball

D. ‘2 Step Down, Strike’ = 2nd step on ground before contact

E. Bring (Uncoil) Your Hips but never ‘roll’ hips all the way through.

F. Lift / Strain and ‘Run Your Feet’ through defender.

5. Drive / Base Block – Middle or # Aiming Point / Landmark

A. Up and Out with 1st step to landmark. Crease elbows.

B. 2nd step down on contact. Bring hands to strike.

C. Heels of hands through breast plates – Eyes fit behind hands under defenders chin.
Never lead / block with head.

D. Lift and strain through defenders chest.

E. Run feet to finish.

OL - 9
PROPER ALIGNMENT

Legs

Feet are the wheels

OL - 10
PROPER USE OF LEVERAGE
Definition: Strike an initial blow at a point.
1. Low enough to create a lifting force on the defender.

2. Close enough to neutralize his charge.

3. The force must be continued to get defender on his heels so he is unable to make a
counter move.

4. Hit up through the defender.

5. Line of force – 45 degree angle up and through a defender that we channel all our
force.

OL - 11
CORE 1 ON 1 BLOCKING TECHNIQUES

OUTSIDE ZONE OVERVIEW
Overview:
1. Eliminate negative runs (RB back to LOS before being touched).
2. Increase yards per carry.

How:
1. Create width and space for RB by moving the defense. The ball can and will run / hit
anywhere:
A. Stay PS on the angle.
B. Bounce outside (capture defense / pinch / sink defense).
C. Cut-up (defense stretch / expands).

Specifics:
1. Landmark is outside butt of callside TE (Ghost TE). Back runs and OL blocks on the angle.
Same page, same angle. Repetitive (looks the same every time) but the ball will hit
anywhere based on defensive reaction.

2. Up Front = 18” splits, aligned off ball. Takeoff! Landmark is PS armpit on Zone combos
(covered) and middle of DL (uncovered). Usually 3 step timing on Zone combos up to 2nd
level. Cover LB on PS # on the angle. Run and cut the backside – Head past thighboard.
Again, always block PS zone on angle of the Back. Stretch / displace / cut. Finish!

3. Running Back = 8 yard depth. Timing step. Landmark is the outside butt of (Ghost) TE.
Press your track to butt of TE. Read is 1st DL (outside in) to next DL inside. Press the LOS
(2 revolutions). Read hat of Down Linemen. 1 cut!

OL - 17

drive 2nd step to crotch. Landmark is PS
B armpit. Must win backside hand.
Uncovered: Stick wedge step in ground and
drive 2nd step. Landmark is middle of DL.
X Always ‘see’ (peripheral) LB for run through.
Overtake color of DL.

BOX A – DL WIDEN:
Covered: Lift, strain, and run feet to keep
eyes through armpit. Stay on angle.

step. Feed (push) DL over and drive up to LB
on angle. Block his PS #.

B) BOX B – DL HANGS INSIDE: (gets reached)

Covered: Drive on angle through armpit. One
B hand ‘feed’ DL inside. Stay on track to block PS
# of LB. Do not square up – Drive through DL
to LB on angle of the Back.
X
Uncovered: Run feet to overtake the color of
DL hanging inside. Dive head across – Stay on
angle of the Back. Run.

« OT’s (and OG’s) must stay square to the LOS while the rusher is below you. You
can only turn to hips / shoulders to the sideline once the rusher has cleared your
outside hip.

« Pass blocking is chest behind knees / knees behind toes. Run blocking is chest

protection call. Will LB to #4.

● 3 Down Front = Turn to the two Linebacker types (Jack and Will Linebackers) away from
the protection call to #4.
